Exclusive: Io Capitano, the latest feature from Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone, and Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border have joined the lineup of this year’s Refugee Week arts and culture festival, running June 17 to 23.

Mubi has joined the festival this year and will launch Garrone’s Io Capitano on its platform during the festival. BFI Player has compiled a Refugee Week collection of free films and rental films. Other major events during the week include:
Key Screenings (London):
● Io Capitano by Matteo Garrone: This Oscar-nominated film follows two Senegalese teenagers, Seydou and Moussa, as they journey from Dakar to Italy, facing deserts, detention centers, and perilous seas in pursuit of a better life.

There isn’t much dialogue in Anthony Chen’s 2023 drama film, Drift. For most of its runtime, it remains extremely quiet—so much so that it tends to get on your nerves to some extent. The big reveal in the end is an absolute gut punch, which practically elevates the narrative. Yet, so many things remain half-baked here, which is not exactly a good sign. There’s nothing wrong with not revealing too much information and letting the audience connect the dots, but the amount of information this film withholds from us is quite frustrating and only leaves us confused. One might argue that Drift is more of a character study of Cynthia Erivo’s Jacqueline than a film focused on finding out what really happened to her, but that doesn’t really justify the really bland narrative that mostly depends on the performance of Erivo and a spirited Alia Shawkat.

The first Fast and Furious flick is the ultimate thrill ride of a movie! It doesn’t shy away from outrageous stunts and action sequences.
From insane car chases to defying physics with ramps and explosions, each F&f film delivers pure entertainment with a focus on spectacle. But what really make the movies shine is the awesome duo of Paul Walker and Vin Diesel.

But, imagine Fast and Furious without Walker’s Brian O’Conner? Believe it or not, it almost happened. As the tenth installment of the high-octane series gears up for release, a surprising detail about the casting of the iconic character has resurfaced.

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast is brought to you by the letter E, as Cynthia Erivo and Luke Evans join Chris Hewitt to talk about their new projects. First up, Erivo talks about her astonishing performance in Drift, which she also produced, and in particular one harrowing scene, and its impact upon her. It's an incredibly intense and honest interview and it can be found from 24:11 - 38:18 (approx). Then Evans returns to the pod after a long absence to talk about his role in Our Son, in which he plays a gay man going through a painful divorce, and playing The Crystal Maze with Daniel Levy. That's from 59:17 - 1:16:28.
Either side of those, Chris is joined in the podbooth by Helen O'Hara and James Dyer for an episode in which they tackle a vaguely-Easter-themed Mount Rushmore question, discuss the storm over Late Night With The Devil...

Franchise animation Kung Fu Panda 4 and creature clash Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire lead a bumper weekend of 16 new films at the UK-Ireland box office.
Universal’s Kung Fu Panda 4 has the biggest opening of the weekend in 715 sites – a significant jump for the series, after 2008’s Kung Fu Panda (448) and sequels in 2011 (514) and 2016 (585), all through Paramount.
Conversely, the total grosses of each film have dropped, with the first title making £20.4m, followed by £17m and £14.2m for the sequels. All of these were pre-pandemic; number four will look to cross the £10m mark before challenging any of those totals.

Cynthia Erivo in Drift
Singaporean director Anthony Chen’s fourth feature, Drift, continues his interest in the archetypal ‘outsider.’ The story centres on Jacqueline (Cynthia Erivo), a young refugee who arrives on a Greek island. She’s trying not only to survive her present but to confront her past. When she strikes up an unexpected friendship with tour-guide Callie (Alia Shawkat), the pair help one another look to the future.
In conversation with Eye For Film, Chen discussed the rejuvenating presence of cinema, his decision to take a leap of faith, and being open to divine intervention.

“Uncut Gems” actor Hailey Gates has assembled an all-star cast for her directorial feature debut “Atropia,” which is produced by “Call Me By Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino.
“Masters of the Air” alum Callum Turner joins “Arrested Development’s” Alia Shawkat in the upcoming film, which shot last summer.
“Atropia” follows the story of an aspiring actress who is working on a U.S. military training base simulating an Iraqi war zone. (“Atropia” is the name of a fake country reportedly invented by the American military for interactive training exercises).
The feature is based on Gates’ 2019 short “Shako Mako” which she originally produced for fashion brand Miu Miu’s Women’s Tales series.
“Farah, a bread seller, walks the streets of a Middle Eastern town, while an American military vehicle, surrounded by soldiers, slowly passes by,” reads the logline for “Shako Mako.” “A moment’s silence. Then, a devastating explosion.

“I honestly was concerned that it was over for me,” Billie Eilish confesses at a table with Dua Lipa, Olivia Rodrigo, Jon Batiste, Cynthia Erivo and Julia Michaels, who came together to discuss their songwriting prowess and process. “We’d been trying and it wasn’t doing what it usually would do in me. I was honestly like, ‘Damn, maybe I hit my peak and I don’t know how to write anymore?’ ” Struggling for inspiration, the 21-year-old had hit a wall, until Greta Gerwig called in January with an assignment: Write a song for Barbie. The result was the emotional and scene-stealing “What Was I Made For?” that Eilish wrote with her brother and musical partner, Finneas. “Greta saved me, really, honestly,” Eilish says. “It brought us out of it and immediately we were inspired and wrote so much more after that.” A frontrunner for best original song at the 2024 Oscars,...

Anthony Chen had a very busy year in 2023, coming up with two films, “The Breaking Ice” and “Drift”, with the second one, which we will deal with in this article, being a rather unique experience for him, considering it was shot in Greece, France and Liberia and is his English-language debut.

Cynthia Erivo has already achieved a Grammy, a Tony, an Emmy, and an Oscar nomination in her career, but the stage and screen actress was determined to add yet another title to her resumé: producer.
Erivo stars in “Drift,” the adaptation of Alexander Maksik’s 2013 novel “A Marker to Measure Drift,” which is her first producing project to be released. As “Drift” is an entirely independent production through an Equity deal, the film is exempt from SAG-AFTRA restrictions amid the ongoing strike.
Erivo exclusively told IndieWire that she was attached to the project since around 2015, when she was starring in “The Color Purple” on Broadway. After a director switch following the death of Bill Paxton, Erivo was key in getting “Drift” greenlit, as well as helping select “Search Party” star Alia Shawkat to co-star after the initial actor “didn’t quite work out.”

Grammy, Emmy, and Tony award-winning triple threat talent Cynthia Erivo emotionally unzips herself for moving film “Drift,” the first project she has produced to be released.
The Oscar-nominated actress leads the independent film, which debuted at Sundance earlier this year. Based on Alexander Maksik’s 2013 novel “A Marker to Measure Drift,” the film follows a refugee who crosses paths with a lonesome tour guide in Greece.
The official synopsis reads: “Jacqueline (Erivo), a young refugee, lands alone and penniless on a Greek island, where she tries first to survive and then to cope with her past. While gathering her strength, she begins a friendship with rootless tour-guide Callie (Alia Shawkat) and together they find the resilience to forge ahead.”
Ibrahima Ba, Honor Swinton Byrne, Zainab Jah, Suzy Bemba, and Vincent Vermignon also star.

SAG-AFTRA may still be on strike, but studios are, nevertheless, pushing their Oscar contenders to garner the adequate (and allowed) attention they need to land nominations.
One of the main methods is getting industry voters out to screenings and making films available on the Academy Screening Room and BAFTA screening platforms. With the two significant organizations banning physical DVD screeners, voting members rely on the respective digital viewing portals to catch up on some of this year’s contenders vying for awards consideration.
Read: Variety’s Awards Circuit for the latest Oscars predictions in all categories.
The Academy performs a heavy vetting process for each film that chooses to submit for consideration. Historically, over 300 movies are in the running for best picture consideration, with more films joining the fray over the next several months. Distributors are the ultimate decision-makers of when a movie is placed in the Academy Screening Room for viewing.
