We got up close and personal with the puppets, sat down for a lengthy chat with studio boss Travis Knight, and even got an extended set visit for Laika’s next big-screen epic, Wildwood. That won’t be out until 2025 (stop-motion takes time), so in the meantime, please enjoy the next best thing…

They’re the studio behind some of cinema’s most beloved stop-motion characters and stories – including the dark, fantastical coming-of-age Coraline, zombie comedy ParaNorman, samurai epic Kubo And The Two Strings, and, most recently, the massively fun Missing Link. Kubo And The Two Strings Photo: Laika Kubo And The Two Strings, Itvx, streaming now
We've recently highlighted some of the foreign and indie films that are worth catching on ITV's free streaming service Itvx and it's worth noting that there's also some great films for kids on there. Among them is this entertaining and original stop-motion adventure with plenty of heart. It marked the directorial debut of Travis Knight - who is currently on pre-production for a film version of The Six Billion Dollar Man as well as another animation, Wildwood. This is the absorbing tale of a young boy (Art Parkinson) who goes on a dangerous quest with his talking monkey (Charlize Theron on no-nonsense vocals) and a samurai who is stuck in a bug outfit (Matthew McConnaughey). Using origami as inspiration for the animation, every inch of the film is a visual feast built around memorable...

Since the 2009 release of “Coraline,” Laika has made a name for itself as a legitimate alternative to Pixar for animated feature films. Laika, the animation house known for Oscar-nominated films from “Coraline” and “ParaNorman” to “The Boxtrolls” and “Kubo and the Two Strings,” has announced its seventh feature. Titled “The Night Gardener,” the project is based on an original screenplay by “Ozark” co-creator Bill Dubuque and will be directed by Travis Knight, Laika’s CEO and president. Knight previously directed “Kubo and the Two Strings” as well as Paramount’s live-action “Bumblebee.”
Laika pitches the film as a “gritty neo-noir folktale centered on a young man in rural Missouri fighting to keep his family together in the wake of a tragedy. The film will paint an unflinching portrait of sacrifice, self-reliance and revenge.”
“’The Night Gardener’ is a beautiful and timeless story that quickens the pulse as often as it breaks the heart,” Knight said. “Bill is a masterful storyteller. He’s crafted a lyrical world layered with complex characters, provocative ideas,...

Laika is teaming with the creator of “Ozark” for a new stop-motion animated feature described as a “gritty neo-noir folktale.” Bill Dubuque, who created Netflix series “Ozark,” wrote the original screenplay for “The Night Gardener,” which will be directed by Laika’s CEO and President Travis Knight, who previously helmed the Laika feature “Kubo and the Two Strings.”
Described as a gritty folktale, the new film follows a young man in rural Missouri fighting to keep his family together in the wake of a tragedy. The film will paint an unflinching portrait of sacrifice, self-reliance and revenge, per an official description.
“’The Night Gardener’ is a beautiful and timeless story that quickens the pulse as often as it breaks the heart,” said Knight in a statement. “Bill is a masterful storyteller. He’s crafted a lyrical world layered with complex characters, provocative ideas, and keenly felt emotion. It’s gonna be one helluva movie.

Laika President & CEO Travis Knight is directing the studio’s next animated feature, Wildwood—an adaptation of the bestselling novel written by The Decemberists’ Colin Meloy, and illustrated by Carson Ellis.
The film penned by Chris Butler (Missing Link) is set beyond Portland’s city limits, in Wildwood. You’re not supposed to go there. You’re not even supposed to know it exists. But Prue McKeel is about to enter this enchanted wonderland.
Her baby brother Mac has been taken by a murder of crows into the forest’s depths, and she – along with her hapless classmate, Curtis – is going to get him back. Prue might think she’s too old for fairytales, but she’s just found herself at the center of one. One filled with strange talking animals, roguish bandits, and powerful figures with the darkest intentions.

In Kubo and the Two Strings, the latest stop-motion feature from the makers of Coraline, the young hero must face off against a frightful and gorgeous creature called Moon Beast — a massive, serpent like creature that glows blue and green under the night moon. That creature is marks a technical move forward for Laika: It’s the animation studio’s first fully 3D-printed character. Laika has used 3D printing in some capacity for puppets on all four of its features, each project a hybrid of traditional stop-motion techniques, new 3D printing techniques, and digital animation. Moon Beast is just one beauty in the constantly stunning fantastical landscape of Kubo and the Two Strings, which opens in theaters today. The film is the feature directorial debut of Laika CEO Travis Knight, who told me that Kubo is “without a doubt the most rewarding creative experience of my entire career.” Yesterday, I...

Its freemium timers may have proved controversial, but Real Racing 3 is still an excellent driving game, not least because the more you play and the more cars you own, the timer element stops being an issue. Anyway, the game sees you racing more than 45 cars over 900 events, upgrading as you go.

Another release date shuffle so get out your calendars and make adjustments as you see fit. First up, animation house Laika has set a September 26, 2014 date for a currrently untitled movie. It won't be Henry Selick's "Shadow King" which the studio recently passed on following Disney's decision to shutter production, but there are a couple of possibilities. There's the adaptation of Philip Reeves' novel "Goblins" that has “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” animation director Mark Gustafson set to helm. The story follows a well-mannered goblin named Skarper who must assemble his more putrid family of Goblins to help him battle a rising and dangerous evil force. And with the book due to hit shelves stateside next year, a 2014 release for the movie could be a smart play. Also in the wings is the hipster ready "Wildwood" based on the book from The Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy. The story concerns a young protagonist.

The sheer thought of animated production house Laika making a new feature should excite most any cinephile or fan of animation, especially with their track record that includes “Coraline” and the upcoming and equally tantalizing "ParaNorman," the horror-themed story of a young boy who looks to save his town from an ages-old curse. We’ve already seen a few trailers for that project, we know composer extraordinaire Jon Brion will be handling soundtrack duties, and frankly we’re pretty excited.
Well it looks as if Laika is lining up another one to satiate our interest in a post-“ParaNorman” world, as they’ve hired “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” animation director Mark Gustafson to helm the adaptation of the Philp Reeves novel “Goblins,” which follows a well-mannered goblin named Skarper who must assemble his more putrid family of Goblins to help him battle a rising and dangerous evil force. Laika Entertainment’s output, being stop-motion and all, requires a lot of manpower and even more time — it’s why they can’t follow DreamWorks or Pixar put out one a year — but they do like to think ahead. With ParaNorman hitting in less than four months, for example, they’ve already optioned a children’s book, Wildwood, the kind of material that could be perfect stomping ground for this Oregon-based team. (If only because it sounds slightly creepy, atmosphere is crucial, and the aesthetics of the original work even translate to their own stylistic tendencies.)
Now, Variety says they’ve picked up the rights to Philip Reeve‘s book Goblins; Mark Gustafson, who did animation direction on Wes Anderson‘s Fantastic Mr. Fox, is helming for the studio. True to Coraline and ParaNorman, Goblins will revolve around “Skarper, a clever young goblin who lives among his ill-mannered bretheren in an ancient castle,...

Colin Meloy, that guy with the annoying voice who is also the frontman of The Decemberists, has teamed up with his illustrator wife to create a trilogy of illustrated children's books, The Wildwood Chronicles. The books, clearly destined to be classics, center around the adventures of Prue McKeel, a twelve-year-old vegetarian from Portland. Not only does he have the misfortune of being a vegetarian, but his baby brother is then kidnapped by a murder of crows and he must travel through an enchanted forest to return him. Stephen Heyman, of the New York Times, writes: The book, intended for ages 9 to 12, brims with grimly comic violence. Coyotes dressed in Napoleonic uniforms train musket, cannon and bayonet on woodland bandits, talking birds and an industrious rat named Septimus. Many perish in the fight, although not nearly as many as Decemberists fans might be accustomed to. So, hipster parents, here'[...]...
