Quotes

  • Al Burns : This isn't Syracuse. People sort of dress the part around here.

Carrie Wells : I told you I don't do pantsuits.

  • Al Burns : How's your mom?

Carrie Wells : She's good. You should come by and see her sometime. She always liked you.

Al Burns : I don't exactly remember it that way.

  • Carrie Wells : So, what do we got?

Al Burns : Couple; Joel and Ann Seiferth. Each took one to the head and chest in the kitchen.

Carrie Wells : Who called it in?

Al Burns : Woman who works for the husband. Came by when he didn't show.

  • Al Burns : So, where we at?

Roe Saunders : Um, M.E. puts time of death about two hours ago.

Nina Inara : We spoke to the security company. Alarm system was off, and, uh, no evidence of forced entry.

Al Burns : So maybe someone they knew.

Nina Inara : Could be the construction crew. They usually get a key.

Carrie Wells : [more to herself]  Lunchtime.

Roe Saunders : Middle of the day, door could have been unlocked. And definitely signs of a struggle. Husband's got a bruise on his cheek. And check this: no jewelry, and all the TVs are gone.

CSU Cesar : [processing elsewhere]  Got tech. Cell phone.

Al Burns : Okay, bag the hands. Get 'em over to the lab. If the husband tried to fight off the killer, we may be able to get some DNA.

  • Al Burns : Okay, let's start with anyone who's had access to the house. Day laborers, plumbers, nannies, housekeepers. And let's talk to the kid.

    [noticing Carrie is distracted]

Al Burns : What is it, Carrie?

Roe Saunders : Oh, here we go again.

Carrie Wells : [flashing back to an alley they passed on the way in]  The tarp. It moved.

  • Al Burns : What do we have on the gun?

Roe Saunders : Uh, nine millimeter. Ballistics are pending. No prints yet.

    Al Burns : DNA?

Roe Saunders : Doesn't look like we got any.

Al Burns : What about access to the house?

Mike Costello : I talked to the contractor; we're still trying to run down some of the day laborers, but he said they haven't been there in over six months. That the family's ran out of money, put the whole thing on hold.

Roe Saunders : How does an anesthesiologist run out of money? Aren't those guys loaded?

Nina Inara : Yeah, not if they're not working. I talked to HR over at St. Mike's. Ann's been on leave for almost eight months.

Al Burns : What about Max? Anything new?

Carrie Wells : According to his school, he was home sick. He's got two living relatives; an aunt and an uncle. Ann's sister Liza, her husband Erik. She's on her way in, he's out of town.

Mike Costello : Uh, we know if he saw anything?

Al Burns : He's in shock. Hasn't said a word. Either way, let's keep this low. No one needs to know there might be a witness.

  • Al Burns : [after Carrie inadvertently meets Elaine]  I didn't realize. I really didn't.

    Carrie Wells : What?

Al Burns : That she was on the case.

    Carrie Wells : Al...

Al Burns : There are ten psychologists in the rotation.

Carrie Wells : ...it's fine. I understand you have a girlfriend. I just didn't realize she was a shrink.

Al Burns : I know what you're thinking.

Carrie Wells : What? That "psychology's a waste of time and money, and research proves that talking about your feelings doesn't make you feel any better"?

Al Burns : Okay, no quoting me on the job.

Carrie Wells : Wow, so many rules here. And by the way, I agree with you. Shrinks never did me any good.

Al Burns : I'm not in it for the free therapy.

  • Carrie Wells : Al, I'm telling you, when his uncle walked into the room, Max was terrified.

Al Burns : Except the uncle was on a business trip at the time of the murder, no?

Nina Inara : Three hours away in Hartford. We're into it, but he could have easily driven back.

Al Burns : How about a motive?

Carrie Wells : Maybe he borrowed money from the in-laws, and enough is enough. Maybe Uncle Erik is the husband's bookie for all we know.

  • Roe Saunders : You guys know India's Palace?

Al Burns : Takeout place over on Vernon.

Roe Saunders : Someone from the victim's house called there every Friday at 6:45. I mean, every Friday night.

Nina Inara : They like curry?

Carrie Wells : No, they love to gamble. Friday night's when you place college sports bets.

    [seeing Roe's look]

    Carrie Wells : I dabble.

Mike Costello : What, so it's like "I'll take the chicken tandoori and ten points on Ohio State"?

Al Burns : I've heard stranger. Roe, take Carrie, check it out.

    Carrie Wells : What?

    Al Burns : You dabble.

  • Carrie Wells : Al, listen to me. This kid, he could be living with his parents' murderer.

Al Burns : And isn't it also possible his parents are dead, this is the guy he's going to have to live with now, he sees him first time since the murder, and he freaks out?

Carrie Wells : How very Dr. Phil of you, Detective.

  • Al Burns : Carrie, could you have said...

Carrie Wells : Said something? No.

Al Burns : These are complex, difficult situations. Which is why you should have waited...

Carrie Wells : Waited for Elaine?

Al Burns : She asked to be present at every interview.

Carrie Wells : That's because she doesn't trust me.

Al Burns : Oh, that's not...

Carrie Wells : That's because she's determined that she's dealing with an unstable detective who's so messed up by a past trauma that she will detonate the first chance she gets.

Al Burns : She never used the word "detonate".

  • Carrie Wells : Al, I'm telling you, I saw that kid. When his uncle walked in the room, he acted like he was afraid for his life. I'm not making this up because my sister was killed. I'm not.

Al Burns : Okay, look, we'll stay on the uncle. No more unannounced visits to Max.

  • Al Burns : Before I talk to Carrie, she won't see Max again without your supervision.

Elaine Margulies : I said that I thought it was foolish to let her anywhere near that little boy. And now...

Al Burns : We don't know what happened.

    Elaine Margulies : Because I wasn't there.

Al Burns : Because you weren't there, maybe it was the uncle who frightened him.

Elaine Margulies : Okay, you really believe that?

Al Burns : Maybe her experience makes Carrie exactly the right person to talk to him.

Elaine Margulies : You're not supposed to defend an ex-girlfriend to your present girlfriend.
