Season Three Review
southdavid12 January 2023
I'm going to review this as the end of season three, rather than the end of the whole series although, if you asked me, I'd say that this felt very much like the end of the run.

With the invasion averted Bill Ward (Gabriel Byrne) goes to prison for Emily's murder. Various people around the globe begin to experience hallucinations of the other life, that they no longer had to endure. Zoe (Pearl Chanda) is unable to shake hers, and the visions of Bill she sees, so she goes to question him. Catherine (Lea Drucker) comes to believe that the visions are related to a blackhole that has formed outside of the Earth's atmosphere, a link between the timelines.

Whilst sharing little with the source novel other than a name, I felt the first season of "War of the Worlds" was alright and the second was an improvement, even if it remains a grim experience. I would say that I thought the show reached a perfect ending in the second season, and running this third was a risk. I'm not convinced that I was wrong, but this third run didn't undermine what we've seen before.

With the loss of some of the characters, most notable Daisy Edgar Jones's Emily in the last season, the story introduces two new characters, Richard and Juliet, played by Lukas Haas and Lizzie Brochere as astronauts on a space station orbiting the Earth. Though initially a confusing side story, they do eventually become integral to the season.

I suppose I feel about this season much the same I've felt about "War of the Worlds" since the beginning. It's an expansive, well made and wonderfully shot show that I perhaps appreciate rather than love, because of the grim aspects to it. If you are at all interested it's work taking the journey, but I can't see it winning many non-sci fi fans over.

Enjoyed better than season one

Warning: Spoilers
I got bored watching season one a couple of years ago so only just picked it up again and binge watched season 2 & 3. I did enjoy them more but still can't get my head around the question "why?"!!!

So here's my review.: Spoilers

A race of people born from 2 humans (sounds familiar) have health issues that seem to get worse with each generation. They travel back in time on spaceships that were built by obviously very brainy scientists physics types of people (where the hell did they get their knowledge from? Oh yeah I forget, we're in a time loop here so it's a bit chicken and egg type of situation) but they've not just come back here just to find a cure for their imminent deaths but also to kill off all the original humans for no logical reason whatsoever.

Im sure I have missed something not least because the subtitles disappeared off the screen before I could ever finish reading them all!

Worth Sticking With It
wildernessbarbie5 November 2022
I hate when a series has such a disappointing ending that you feel angry you've wasted time investing in the show. I don't feel that was the case here.

No, everyone doesn't "live happily ever after," but then it's post-apocalyptic, dystopian sci-fi, so what do you expect? I'd be disappointed if they did.

Good character arcs, & redemption for those that deserved it.

My one big frustration was that throughout the last several episodes, but ESPECIALLY this one, they know they have very limited time on the surface, yet you almost NEVER see anyone hurrying, much less RUNNING. The fate of two worlds, BILLIONS of people is at stake and they can't muster up a slow trot even?!!? WTH??? There's just no sense of urgency at any point, knowing connections could be irrevocably broken at any second, and it's still "Hey! How's it going? Bob sends his love" type small talk. Ugh.

Other annoyance was the fact that in England, where weapons and ammo aren't as easily accessible as the US, they seem to have endless bullets to shoot at all metal robots, when it seems like some good spears, lassos, bolas or the like would have been much more effective (not to mention quieter). I hope the UK isn't developing a gun fetish too.

Otherwise, has next to nothing to do with the H. G. Wells version, but still enjoyable.

NOTE FOR THOSE NEEDING SUBTITLES The diverse cast was nice, but side note- they really need to coordinate subtitles with in show text. It often said "Speaking French" over the French translation in show, making it impossible to read. My French is good enough that I usually got by, but a few times had to turn off subtitles, rewind and watch for translation, then turn on again. Really annoying.

Finally it comes together

Warning: Spoilers
I love Sci Fi so have to inevitably endure some dross. To be fair, the first season of this, I struggled and wouldn't have cared if no more made. Some improvements evident in second season but still too often frustrating. However I've really enjoyed this final season where it all comes together. I have closure now and can recommend this. You just have to stick with it. Interesting take on the original. I really shouldn't be surprised at the conduct of humanity. So, this in many respects plays out as our history teaches us. Anyway, give it a go, you've nothing to lose and you might enjoy it along the way.
