Nice film-work in a simple story
OJT1 October 2012
Warning: Spoilers
This little film was better than expected, reading some of the reviews. If you can stand a simple story about hunters and the hunted, and like a film from the rural medieval ages, this might be a film for you. The film was already sold for cinema showings in 55 countries before it premiered in Norway, after being a success at TIFF in Toronto.

The poster tells a lot, but this is not an action film, it give you a bleak glimpse of everyday life just a few years back in a poor country, where half the population was killed by the black death plague. It's a fictive story, but you buy it, since both acting is good, as well as the technical stuff is well done. Together with grand natural nature mountain landscapes, this is very pleasant to watch.

The girl, Signe, goes through a horrific start in this story, watching her family being slaughtered, before she is captured by the lawless killers. As the title of the film tell, Flukt (which means flight, like in a runaway from hunters) she manages to escape, which is the English title of the movie. And it's not a easy one, this escape.

Director Roar Uthaug (known from Cold prey) knows his work. This is both exciting and pretty. The effects are good, the photography is beautiful and well done. The acting is good, the girls are good, the villain played by Berdal nothing short of frighteningly amazing! Then, what is wrong? Well, really nothing. Things could only be slightly better. Except you'd probably like a more advanced story. I don't think this is the most important, because many still will enjoy this glimpse of the 1300's in rural Norway. It's bleak and grim, but still likable.

Actually another Norwegian film comes to mind, watching this, Veiviseren ("Pathfinder" in original version, not the American remake with the same name) which was an Academy Award nominee back in the eighties. This is better, coming 25 years later. But time has moved on, and Veiviseren wouldn't hold the quality today.

Great locations, OK story
peefyn22 March 2015
The Norwegian landscape gets put to its proper use in "Flukt", where it's ancient look makes it easy to believe that what you are watching is taking place in the middle ages.

The two girls playing the leads do a great job portraying scared, but level headed, girls. The "grown-ups" did a good job too, but some of these characters were reduced to mindless goons. The movie is quite short on dialog, and some of it was pretty bad. Enough was said to keep the story going, but a little more would maybe added some (needed) depth to some of the characters.

I guess you could say the plot is a series of close calls (but which action movie isn't?), and the movie sometimes takes some shortcuts for simplicity. Especially one sequence in the end would have gone down much differently if just any of the characters had said something.

While the locations used for filming were really good, it was sometimes hard to feel that they connected with each other, and because they were so different (rocks, forests, mountains, plains) it was sometimes hard to place them right next to each other (even though they very well could have been).

Solid even without subtitles
calicut11011 August 2021
For some reason this is on prime video but has no subtitles. I think it's Norwegian. Even without subtitles you understand 90% of what's going on. The acting is very good, amazing cinematography and I mean truly amazing. If you're bored just give it a try.

Solid as a rock, but too simple and predictable to be great
The_Dead_See23 October 2014
I'm not sure I've seen a film as satisfyingly simple as 'Flukt' in years.

The year is 1363. The place is Norway, recently decimated by the bubonic plague. A young girl's family is murdered by a group of roving bandits and the girls is taken hostage. With the help of another young girl within the group of bandits, she escapes and the two girls flee across breathtakingly beautiful Norwegian landscapes with the bandits in close pursuit. This, in a nutshell, is the entire movie.

I'm a fan of simple films. I think the present day trend to blend too many subplots leads to 3 hour, convoluted, bloated stinkers (The Dark Knight and Pirates of the Caribbean, I'm looking at you...) but in some ways 'Flukt' was too simple for its own good. I was invested in the wellbeing of the two girls but I never really felt a sense of danger or surprise because the plot played it so safe and trod such predictable ground. You know this is going to turn out okay and even the ways in which the antagonists are dispatched are unfortunately over-telegraphed.

I would have loved to have seen a bit more of an edgy approach to the plot, a few twists and turns that weren't so obvious. But still, it's beautifully shot, beautifully acted, and exciting enough to keep your attention. Also clocking in at only 78 minutes, it's so short that even if you dislike it, you won't feel like you wasted any time.

Let the hunt begin...

Warning: Spoilers
Having absolutely no expectations to this movie, I sat down to watch it with a clean slate, so to speak. And I must admit that I am pleasantly surprised by it.

The story in "Escape" (or "Flukt" as it is named in Norwegian) is about the harsh life in Norway in the mid 14th century Norway, a country ravaged by plague. Witnessing her father, mother and brother savagely slain by the hands of a group of outlaws, the young girl Signe is captured and comes to realize that escaping the clutches of the outlaws is the only way to survive the oncoming ordeal.

I will say that, despite having a fairly predictable storyline, then the story told in "Flukt" was actually interesting enough and it captivated me throughout the entire movie, from start to end. And this was really helped nicely along by good acting performances and also the breathtaking nature of the Majestic Norwegian wilds.

If you have the disc with the extra materials, then the 'visual effects' extra material is well worth watching. I was especially impressed with the way they touched up the Norwegian wilds through the use of CGI and effects. And the end result as seen on the screen as you watch the movie is just spectacular.

The people on the cast list were doing great jobs with their given roles, and Isabel Christine Andreasen (playing Signe), along with Milla Olin (playing Frig) and Ingrid Bolsø Berdal (playing Dagmar) really carried the movie well. I ordered this movie because I wanted to see Kristian Espedal (aka Gaahl) in the movie, where he plays Grim. And anyone listening to black metal should be familiar with Gaahl.

"Flukt" is an entertaining movie that is also visually spectacular, not in a Hollywood CGI galore special effects fest, but in a majestic and visually stunning way in terms of scenery, touch ups to the wilderness and such.

The DVD cover does however indicate that you will witness some massive battles, given what is portrayed in the back of the three outlaws standing in the center. But, there is no such massive battles anywhere in the movie. So the DVD cover could have been a little bit better put together to honestly portray what you are getting here.

Don't let a simple fact like a foreign non-English movie scare you away from watching "Flukt", because it is most definitely well worth watching. And if you don't understand Norwegian, unlike me, then the movie does, of course, come with English subtitles.

Better than expected
Symarip9 December 2016
Although I enjoyed the director's first movie, Cold Prey, I didn't expect to like Escape as much as I did. Set in medieval Norway, it's a bleak, atmospheric and thrilling movie with great acting (from the first-time child actors as well), great cinematography, and an eerie soundtrack that fits perfectly.

Its story about a girl escaping from a camp and being hunted by her captors is simple and not too original (it reminds me a bit of Apocalypto, which I'm sure wasn't the first to do this either), but it's executed so well that didn't bother me at all. If you're into movies like Black Death and Evil Rising (Sauna), you're definitely going to want to check this one out.

Hard Times, Hard People
Tweetienator17 October 2019
Flukt (escape) provides us a fine survival story playing in dark, medieval times: a girl loses her family while traveling a by the Black Plague wasted land and is taken to the camp by the murderers. There she got to fight for her life and for her freedom. Far better than your typical Disney- or Hollywoodized movie, this is a fine piece that gives as a little glimpse into dark, harsh times and the people living there. On top, we get fine thrilling moments and a got shot of some good ol' action, and the acting is good too.

A low budget Norwegian survival-drama
Martin_Stord29 September 2012
Well, after watching this movie yesterday (being shown for only 3 days, no surprise) I was not left with any good feelings, whatsoever. Frankly, the only thing making me rate it 5/10 is that it has some good, high quality shots of the Norwegian nature. I didn't find it particularly thrilling, and I could barely keep track of the movie, as it was so unilateral. The movie starts too slow, and ends too fast. I will not spoil either, but everyone in that cinema knew how the movie was going to develop. If you are Norwegian, and you just want to watch it, because it's Norwegian, that's the only valid excuse there is for watching this movie.

Is it worth the watch?
saltdog-8162523 March 2019
I saw this movie on a streaming app and passed it by a few months ago, now decided to give it a watch. I can't say I loved it, but I wasn't disappointed either. I found this film entertaining and it was able to keep my attention for the whole film, a task that is rarely done with most of the movies I see nowadays. While the plot is not new, and this film does have its cliches there still was something there that kept me interested.

Cons: a basic escape/ survival story, while not really overdone, this film doesn't bring anything new to the screen. It definitely had some predictable moments, the ending especially, but it still kept me interested even though I could guess what was going to happen next. I go back a forth on this, I kind of wish there was more dialogue between the many leads, but at the same time I'm fine with it because it gives it a more authentic feel that isn't saturated in exposition.

Pros: the acting was good, it is hard when you have child actors, but they really had some good direction. The scenery was amazing, in an age of CGI and special effects it is refreshing to watch a film with real (beautiful) locals and practical effects. Decent story, it knew when to build tension and when to let you breathe.

I can't say that I would recommend it but I can't say I wouldn't either. I found it enjoyable and entertaining, and while it's nothing special I didn't feel like I had just wasted my time watching it. So, if you're looking for something different I think it's worth checking out.

Wonderfully filmed, with actors on a stage.
sverrehu10 February 2013
Incredible filming, with typical Norwegian woods and landscape. The directors and clippers know what they are doing. Great music score, and a good story. Composer and writer know what they are doing.

But as a Norwegian who understands the language, I wonder what happened to the actors. This movie brings me right back to the movies made in Norway during the 70-ies and 80-ies, when they brought stage actors to the movie screen. No sentence uttered in this movie, from any character, comes out naturally. It's like it was played on a stage, not on the screen.

I really wish I had seen this movie without understanding the dialog, then it would have been great.

Visceral, well-timed survival story
darth-birder26 September 2013
I am extremely surprised by the low scores of this good movie in IMDb. I never heard of it until today. Watched it without expectations but without preconceptions as well. Big surprise, this movie was well-timed, didn't lose time with unnecessary dialogs, didn't stretch situations. It is plain, you live or you die. Acting was remarkably good, photography and cinematography impeccable. The most important: was entertaining, and very engaging (you side-up immediately with the good ones and want the bad ones to die, because they are good actors, the really make you believe they are bad, bad people). In less than an hour and a half, you have a good movie, a good story well told. I wonder why the hobbit needs 9 hours to be told... (yes that was sarcasm). Watch Flukt, it is a very good movie.

Very good little movie
Horror-yo13 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I think we could say this is a prime example of Nordic efficiency. The main actors responsible in conveying the emotions necessary for this film to be poignant are all well picked and play their role plainly. The minor string-score in the background and slow-mo scenes are there but aren't overly dramatic. The story is terribly simple, a mere reiteration of typical narratives, and yet the viewer gets pulled in and very quickly finds himself curious about what the next scene will bring.

The film is laudable in its efficiency: how they managed to make a whole film (albeit only 1hrs 20) with such a limited amount of characters, how they've managed to keep the film going and produce good enough scenes with so few characters and so little to work with in the story, and finally, in how they managed in such a short time to make the viewer care for those lead roles.

There are interesting choices in the film: showing the older girl teach the little girl how to use a spoon, that familial sisterly bonding and cultural transmission. The daughter-crazy warrior woman, after she's heard one of her better men say to her "let the girls make their choice, let them live their natural lives", shoots right into his heart out of frustration, as she couldn't handle the truth and kills the messenger. And at the end, she finally hears the little girl say "Mommy", but it's only a lure, and it's her naivety that failed her.

Quite a few interesting themes, each scene is good. The relationships betw. the main characters complex and intriguing, and it's very well paced. 7.5/10

The Black Death and all it's horrors, in one crappy movie.
shsleen29 September 2012
Warning: Spoilers
With lack of other movies to watch in Norway, I decided to watch this on a lonely Friday night. I had never heard of it before I stood in line to buy a ticket. The movie was looking good based on the poster, and there wasn't much to read about it on the internet.

The movie starts with a family of four moving away from their old town. The movie takes place 10 years after the Black Death. On the road, they get stopped due to the cliché moment of stones in the road, and guess what's happening now? Yes, raiders.

After the raiders taunt their parents, the little boy try to run away. He gets shot by the leader with a crossbow. But, the girl get's another fate. The leader of the raiders, a woman who had to escape her old town after she gets the blame for the pest when it arrives. She had a girl with her, who wanted a little sister, but she couldn't get anymore children.

They take the girl with them back to the camp, where they bind her up. As the name suggests, she escapes. With the little girl.

The rest of the movie is just a bad chase scene. I got bored after 5 minutes, but it would't end. I think the movie is supposed to be thrilling, but no.

The end up on the top of a cliff, where the girl jumps, and the small one goes back to the raiders. This is where the movie should have ended, but no. They had to do a cliché ending with her killing the raiders, and escaping with the girl.

My favorite part was the credits. One of the only good things with the movie, was the landscape and graphical quality.

Es-caping
kosmasp15 April 2020
So let's call it or rather a few things here for what they are: convinient! And yes that means that they happen so the movie and our character can move along. If you have issues with them, you might not feel that the movie deserve the rating I gave it. Fair enough.

Having said that, it is a thriller, things that are or seem unlikely will happen. Overall it is very well shot though and you are immersed into the story. Or can be - which is quite something if you watch the outtakes after the movie is over (on the disc version I own) - it seems so far removed. And it is a testament to the actors for going to that place ... literally and metaphorically speaking

Enjoyable medieval flick
phanthinga23 July 2018
Before watching the latest live action movie adaptation from the "Tomb Raider" franchise directed by a Norwegian director Roar Uthaug i think i need to watch at least one of his movie first so I choose Flukt or Escape in english cause I love a good medieval flick and this time it set in Norway a place I hardly know anything about.Despite the main lead is just another 'Mary Sue' kind of character and a few errors in the subtitle from my version of the movie it still very easy to follow the story and about 1h 20 minutes it done a good job to entertain me

Prime Video only Norwegian no English subtitles
davidwoodson-1693528 November 2021
The movie might be good but on Prime Video there is no English anything. Waste of time, hence 1 star.

The subtitles do not show English as an option, yet it shows up in the English selection of movies. I am paying to see this, Prime Video is abysmal.

This is so sad because it seems like a good show.

I just hope that Prime Video will someday provide English subtitles.

Watch it & it is gone tommorow morning
alisohrabibi23 June 2019
It is a mediocre movie at any sight, a simple story , short duration with no complicated mazes that needs to be solved or think about, actions are neither great nor bad , just fine (mediocre). Something that may make you say how beautiful is the landscapes & pictures in this movie , it is not a time wasting movie , it is worth watching for 75 minutes, but don't expect high expectations. 5 out 10

Loved it
DanteDAnthony27 February 2013
Flawlessly crafted and acted. Each of the characters engages your interest, even the evil ones some sympathy as one senses their back stories. The landscapes scenes transcend the clichés of "beautiful nature" and reveal it as sometimes magnificent, sometimes dangerous, and often simply what nature at the end of the day is; a universe we did not make that is neither for nor against us.

The story line has been done many times, but there is a freshness in this film, an immediacy, and a sense of deft actuality that places you there. Nothing is wasted, nothing is overdone, and with each shot the characters reveal not the standard villains of the era, but merely people caught up in the after effects of the Black Plague's having ravaged the stability of Europe.

Short and simple
RandomTard26 August 2022
This small movie was pretty well made. The acting was ok and sounds were balanced, but there was too much unsheathing noises. The problem with this movie is the story. There is barely any. It is so simple little story, and so many times told before, that it just doesn't really have anything to keep interest.

It really isn't the masterpiece some reviewers say it is, but it's perfectly watchable. The scenery is nice, although the forest where the bad guys have their hideout seems very small.

And for some reason I am suddenly expected to write a bloody book about this movie, what is going on imdb??

Universal Themes - Universal Thrills
LauraLeeWasHere20 May 2013
Warning: Spoilers
If you had told me I would be watching a subtitled Norwegian film, I would have told you to, "Go ahead and pull the other leg". But a long weekend was in front of me and I wanted to rent a few movies to enjoy some moments of escapism. So when I saw the title, "Escape" I was drawn to it. After reading the short description, in which it did NOT mention it was either NORWEGIAN or SUBTITLED, I decided to rent it. I found out about the Norwegian when writing came on the screen to explain the set up for the story. While I was having an "Oh no. What's this?" moment on the inside, I instinctively was reading the translation on the outside: " 1638 Norway; black plague has killed half the population; lawlessness and hardship covers the land; a few people risk the danger to wander in the hope of finding new lives and new hope." I was hooked. It takes only another few minutes for the action to begin. Like those nightmares we all get where something big and horrible is trying to catch us and we feel too small and weak to defend ourselves, this appears to be your typical "Chase" movie. Just like the Terminator. At the heart, it is the story of two young girls running through the bleak, barren and beautiful landscape to escape from a gang of ruthless killers, led by a bleak, barren and beautiful woman. But beyond that it departs from usual "chase" territory when the story gradually reveals the reasons behind what's going on. As we learn about the characters histories and motivations of hate, love, selfishness and pain, which are believably brought to life by the sincere and fierce acting of this cast (especially the main actors: Isabel Christine Andreasen, Milla Olin and Ingrid Bolso Berdal) we can't help but ask the deeper question: "whom" is truly escaping "what"? So unlike other "Chase" films, you will want to leave your brain powered ON for this one. It takes a lot for me to give a movie 9 stars out of 10. My main criteria is two fold. 1) Is there anything about this movie I would change or fix? and 2) Was I lost in the story? The Answers: 1) I could find nothing I personally would change and 2) I was definitely "captured" by this story and did NOT want to "escape". Laura-Lee

A girl named Signe witnesses the murder of her family by a ruthless gang of warriors and is taken hostage by them.
reneemdoucet6 June 2013
I am partly rating this film a 10 because I feel the overall rating is much too low. Mostly, though, I feel those stars are well-deserved. This movie is absolutely beautiful in terms of cinematography, and very riveting, story-wise. What is the one thing every living being must do or attempt to do? From chimp to human to bullfrog? Survive. This is precisely what this film was about. Survival. Simple, perhaps, but when the main theme of a film touches survival, and is coupled with great actors, a superb music score and continuous suspense and excitement, it will be nothing short of gripping.

I highly recommend this one.

Gripping stuff
gyalexander30 July 2014
This film was actually more enjoyable with subtitles - it's interesting how many phrases sound identical to Scots. That aside, I've not been so absorbed in a film for a long time. I noticed an earlier review which mentioned that a rubber sole on a shoe was visible in one scene - my thoughts while watching the film were that the footwear seemed authentic and that the soles appeared to be wooden, and I think that sounds likely to be feasible, as wooden soles and clogs were around in Europe since before Roman times. The overall period feel of the film seemed faultless to me. The performances of all the actors were of a high order and wholly convincing. The script tells a simple yet powerful story - usually I tend to answer email and reply to messages in the middle of films these days (getting old, I guess) but not with this one. Excellent film.

A simple but well executed and satisfying film
ian-j-williams7524 July 2014
I stumbled across this little gem on Amazon Instant Video and was persuaded to watch it by the numerous good reviews. I'm so glad that I did because it is a great little film – using a combination of gritty visuals, great acting and the stark but beautiful landscape of the Norwegian mountains to tell a simple but gripping tale. The pacing is great and the way that the characters are fleshed out (for the most part) is pretty well done – although there are a few unanswered questions about how the gang of robbers came to come together. The writers also did a good job of making the story harrowing but not dwelling too much on the suffering of individual characters. There's some blood – but it's not excessive and the potential sexual element (as is natural for a story about a young girl kidnapped by a bunch of depraved bandits) is an ever-present threat but never strays into exploitation territory.

This certainly deserves a LOT better than the 6/10 rating it currently has on IMDb!

Loved this movie
shereejo21 June 2014
I love when I watch a movie that stars actors I've never seen before. I was enthralled by the movie from the start. The actors were so good and I loved the whole story. This was a gem of a movie I came across having never heard of it before. The scenery was gorgeous and I never mind subtitles. I always forget I'm even watching a foreign movie if it's good. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes adventure, a little thriller, and period-type movies. I'm especially fascinated with the lead actress. She was so scary tough but yet you also felt some empathy for her. I will be watching for her in the future now. There are some brutal scenes so if you don't like violence, this movie isn't for you. I was curious enough about this movie to look it up and check out the actors. That is when I know I really liked a movie. Plus, I thought about it long after it ended. Maybe just me, but I really liked this movie.
