Paging Don Johson! Report to the set of Ryan Murphy’s new ABC drama series, Dr. Odyssey, to join Joshua Jackson on a medical emergency! That’s right, patients. Don Johnson is scrubbing up for Murphy’s mysterious new project, Dr. Odyssey, which could be a medical procedural. The 20th Century Studios series targets a fall launch, with Ryan Murphy Television leading the charge.
While details about the show remain a mystery, reports indicate it’s a medical procedural aboard a cruise ship. If we know Murphy, there’s more than ship-wide food poisoning on the menu. Details about Johnson’s character remain unknown.
Murphy will write Dr. Odyssey and executive produce with Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken. Paris Barclay directs and executive produces Dr. Odyssey. Eric Paquette, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson, and Nissa Diederich also executive produce alongside Jackson.

A new study indicates that the tenets that contributed to “Barbie’s” $1.4 billion box office success and pop culture dominance — namely featuring a female-led ensemble — was the exception rather than the rule in Hollywood this year. Outside of Barbieland and a handful of other movies that were fronted by female characters, there was decreasing opportunity for women in film in 2023.
The latest “It’s a Man’s (Celluloid) World” report from Dr. Martha Lauzen, executive director of the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University, found that in 2023, only 18% of the 100 top-grossing films featured more female than male characters and 5% of films had equal numbers of female and male characters. This meant that a whopping 77% of movies had more male than female characters in speaking roles.

Although Barbie won the box office last year, a demographic analysis of the rest of 2023’s releases indicates that Hollywood is still investing primarily in male-centered movies.
Just 30 percent of the top 100 films of 2023 featured a female lead or co-lead, the lowest share in a decade, according to the latest research brief from USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative. AI2 has compiled this data annually since 2007 (which, at 20 percent, featured the lowest-ever percentage of women protagonists), and last year’s mark is a substantial drop from 2022’s record-high of 44 percent.
“This is a catastrophic step back for girls and women in film,” AI2 founder Stacy L. Smith said in a statement. “These numbers are more than just a metric of how often girls and women are in protagonist roles. They represent the career opportunities offered to women in the industry…. Even by looking at the films that were moved to 2024 because of the strike,...

Thanks to Mario, J. Robert Oppenheimer and M3GAN, Universal Pictures ranked as the highest-grossing studio at the 2023 box office.
The company’s slate — a range of 24 films that included “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Oppenheimer” and “M3GAN” — collected $4.907 billion in worldwide ticket sales. Universal’s victory is notable because it marks the first time since 2015 that Disney was not the global box office leader.
Disney slid to second place in terms of market share as its 17 new films, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” and “The Little Mermaid” among them, raked in $4.827 billion globally. In a note to press, the studio partially attributed the $80 million difference to the fact that Disney released seven fewer movies than Universal in 2023. It also went on to stress that Disney had the most titles of any studio in the top 10 this year, with four of the...

Fifth Season, the production company behind “Severance” and “80 for Brady,” has been hit with another round of layoffs due to the historic Hollywood double strike.
The cost-cutting measures impacted 30 executive and administrative roles, totaling 12% of the company. Thursday’s layoffs follow a previous round of cuts in April that decreased 2% of its staff, including eight executives.
“Today we made the difficult decision to reduce Fifth Season’s headcount due to the impact on our business operations as a result of the ongoing dispute between the AMPTP and WGA & SAG-AFTRA,” a spokesperson for Fifth Season said in a statement. “This resulted in the loss of 30 positions across executive and administrative roles, approximately 12% of our workforce. Our team is extraordinary and the reduction of staff by even one individual, let alone many, is heartbreaking”

Until now, Diane Keaton has been wondering for decades why she was even cast in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather.
On Friday, the filmmaker took to his Instagram Stories for an “Ask me anything” session, encouraging fans to ask him about his life, work and career achievements. Among those who responded was none other than the Book Club: The Next Chapter actress.
Coppola proceeded to post Keaton’s question for all to read: “Why on Earth did you choose me for The Godfather?!!”
The Oscar-winning actress took on the role of Kay Adams-Corleone, the wife of Al Pacino’s Michael Corleone, in the 1972 film, which quickly became a cult classic.
The director responded to her question, writing, “I chose you, because although you were to play the more straight/vanilla wife, there was something more about you, deeper, funnier, and very interesting. (I was right).”

Keep an eye on the sky, explorers! The quirky and comical auteur Wes Anderson is bringing his newest movie “Asteroid City” to select theaters in a limited fashion this week, before its wide release on Friday, June 27 sends it to cinemas across the United States.

Get ready for a continuation of the recurrent rotation between “The Super-Mario Bros.” (Universal) and “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) as #1 and #2 on PVOD charts. Both films (each priced at $19.99) will likely add two more weeks minimum back and forth atop the lists after a similar battle the last two.
Netflix meantime has about as top-heavy a list of older theatrical releases, with only one original making their top 10 (in tenth place). Of note there — “To Leslie,” virtually unknown before Andrea Riseborough’s surprise Oscar Best Actress nomination, initially reached #1 before dropping to a still notable #2 (behind the 2013 comedy “We’re the Millers”).
“John Wick” kept “Smb” from a second week at #1 when it was released. But this week, “Smb,” by far the biggest domestic theatrical hit for 2023 so far, returned to #1 at both iTunes and Vudu. “John Wick” still leads at Google Play, but that site usually lags for a few days,...

‘Book Club: The Next Chapter’ (2023) Ending, Explained: Why Do Vivian And Arthur Cancel The Wedding?
While it’s irrefutably true that where exactly you are in life has more to do with your opinion of a movie than maybe even the movie itself, some films are more demanding than that. To truly let go of your reservations and take Bill Holderman’s rom-com Book Club: The Next Chapter how it was intended, you’d need to tame a lot of your cynicism, and even your politics may need to take a backseat. And if you can look past the tremendous exhibition of privilege the characters wish to pass off as their impassioned revolt against fate, Book Club really does bring about quite a ray of hope, a toned-down version of which could be yours too. Barring the recurrent The Alchemist references that can be chalked up to Carol, Vivian, Diane, and Sharon’s hallmark optimism and the flamboyantly mushy ending, it’s quite refreshing...

The total U.K. and Ireland box office for May 2023 is £78.2 million ($97.7 million) which is 19% lower than May 2022, per numbers released by Comscore.
Year-to-date 2023 is currently running 1% behind the same period in 2022. This is in contrast to most other territories where 2023 is significantly higher than last year, Comscore said.
“Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” opened at the beginning of May and achieved the highest three-day opening of the year with £9.2 million. It is the highest-grossing film in May with £33.6 million. It is currently the 16th-biggest title in the MCU all-time chart in the territory, tracking just behind “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which earned £34.4 million. “Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3” is also the second-biggest release of the year so far, behind Universal’s “The Super Mario Bros. Earning $95.5 million over the course of its opening weekend, The Little Mermaid easily took control of the weekend box office. Add “scroll-throwing” to the list of potential exercises for Jane Fonda’s next workout tape.
After the film legend presented director Justine Triet with this year’s Palme d’Or award at Cannes on Saturday, she noticed Triet was beginning to walk away without taking the traditional scroll that comes with the award. Fonda tapped her on the back to get her attention to take the scroll, but the “Anatomy of a Fall” director was already far from the podium. So, Fonda just flung it at her.
The scroll smacked Triet square on the back of her head but she still didn’t turn to Fonda in response. The audience and those on stage erupted into laughter. Fonda looked into the crowd below and stretched her arms out like, “Wth?” then marched upstage toward Triet, who was getting a congratulatory hug.
Check out the hilarious video below.

The summer moviegoing season is officially upon us now that "Fast X" brought the "Fast & Furious" franchise back to the big screen, with this latest entry serving as the beginning of the end for Dom and the Fast Family. And given the movie's performance in theaters on its opening weekend, it seems like that's probably in Universal's best interests. We'll get into the "why" in a moment but, first, let's break down the numbers, shall we?
"Fast X" made a lot of money, taking in a decent $67.5 million domestically, but a massive $251.3 million internationally, per The Numbers. That ranks as the second-biggest global debut for 2023 to date, just behind "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which was also released by Universal Pictures. On that note, "Mario" added another $9.8 million domestically this weekend ($1.23 billion worldwide). Somewhat amazingly, director Louis Leterrier's "Fast" flick made even more in China than it did in North America,...

The 10th instalment of the “Fast and Furious” franchise was off to the races this weekend, knocking “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” out of first place and easily claiming the No. 1 spot at the box office. “Fast X” earned $67.5 million in ticket sales from 4,046 North American theatres, according to estimates from Universal Pictures on Sunday.
It’s on the lower end of openings for the series which peaked with “Furious 7’s” $142.2 million launch, the sole movie in the series to surpass $100 million out of the gates. “Fast X’s” domestic debut only ranks above the first three. The last movie, “F9”, opened to $70 million in 2021.
But this is also a series that has usually made the bulk of its money internationally, often over 70%. True to form, overseas it’s on turbo drive. “Fast X” opened in 84 markets internationally, playing in over 24,000 theatres, where it earned an estimated $251.4 million.

Summer is motoring along, making for the perfect pun for this week’s widest release, Universal Pictures’ “Fast X,” the 10th installment of the street racing franchise starring Vin Diesel, now into its 22nd year. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After a bit of pre-production drama in which long-time director Justin Lin vacated that post, replaced by Louis Letterier (“Now You See Me”), Diesel and his “family” returned for “Fast X” with the additions of Jason Momoa and Brie Larson, and with the majority of characters from the last nine movies still appearing in some capacity or other. Reviews for the movie were mixed at best, with just 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, the worst rating for a chapter since Diesel returned for 2009’s “Fast & Furious.”

Universal’s “Fast X” is not bringing in the box office riches that past “Fast & Furious” films used to in North America with a $67 million domestic opening, but it is still finding great success internationally with a $253 million overseas launch to earn $319 million worldwide.
In the U.S., “Fast X” isn’t showing signs that it will top the $173 million final total of its predecessor “F9,” a film that came out during the early stages of box office rebuilding in summer 2021. Its $67.5 million opening has met pre-release projections but is below the $70 million launch of “F9.”
The film also received a B+ on CinemaScore, 82% positive score on PostTrak and 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. While “Fast X” will still have some premium format support alongside “The Little Mermaid” on Memorial Day weekend, that good-but-not-excellent audience reception may not be enough to give the film legs to reach $200 million domestically.

“Fast X,” the 10th installment in Universal’s high-octane franchise, powered to $320 million worldwide, including an uninspired $67.5 million in its domestic debut. It secured the second-biggest global opening weekend of the year following another Universal title, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” ($377 million).
Even though “Fast X” arrived on the higher end of projections, the action-adventure saga has been experiencing diminishing returns in North America. In terms of opening weekend ticket sales, the 10th chapter landed behind the latest entry, 2021’s “F9: The Fast Saga,” which kicked off to $70 million. And that was at a time when Covid era restrictions meant only 80% of theaters were open and attendance hadn’t yet rebounded. Pre-pandemic “Fast” installments were far bigger in their starts, including 2017’s “The Fate of the Furious” ($98 million debut), 2015’s “Furious 7” (a series-high $148 million debut) and 2013’s “Fast and Furious 6” ($97 million debut).

“Fast X,” the latest installment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise, is speeding to a projected $67.25 million debut at the domestic box office this weekend.
The street racing movie earned $28 million on Friday from 4,046 theaters, and is expected to gross another $22.43 million on Saturday and $16.82 million on Sunday. This will be enough to knock Disney and Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” out of the top spot, as the superhero tale is expected to pull in $32.89 million in its third weekend of release, bringing its North American total to over $267 million.
On Thursday, “Fast X” raked in $7.5 million in previews, setting it on track to earn more than $60 million in its first weekend of release. That puts the 10th chapter in the “Fast” saga at No. 7 in terms of highest box office debuts, between 2021’s “F9: The Fast Saga” ($70 million) and 2019’s “Hobbs and Shaw” ($60 million). Jane Fonda is calling out late French filmmaker René Clément over on-set sexual harassment.
The “Book Club: The Next Chapter” actress revealed to “Watch What Happens Live” host Andy Cohen that Clément propositioned her while filming 1964 thriller “Joy House.” The film also starred Alain Delon and Lola Albright, featuring both American and French actors under Clément’s agreement with MGM. Natalie Wood was originally set to star before dropping out; Fonda replaced the “Rebel Without a Cause” actress.
Host Cohen asked Fonda to name “one man in Hollywood that tried to pick you up once that you turned down,” to which Fonda replied, “The French director René Clément.”
The Oscar winner continued, “Well, he wanted to go to bed with me because he said the character had to have an orgasm in the movie and he needed to see what my orgasms were like. He said it in French and...

Marvel must be letting out a pretty big sigh of relief right now. "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" not only had a great opening weekend, but it had one of the best holds ever for a Marvel Cinematic Universe film in its second weekend. Whereas other recent MCU films such as "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness," "Thor: Love and Thunder," and "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" (more on that in a moment) fell off a cliff in weekend two, the finale to the "Guardians" trilogy is proving to be a crowd-pleaser with real staying power. Unfortunately, the weekend's new releases didn't fare particularly well, but we'll get to that.
Per The Numbers, director James Gunn's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" earned $60.5 million in its second weekend, easily taking the top spot ahead of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" ($13 million). Meanwhile, that film crossed $1.2 billion worldwide,...

James Gunn’s band of galactic rascals are proving their worth at the box office as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 enjoyed the best second-weekend hold of any sequel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the second-best among any MCU title, according to final weekend numbers.
From Marvel Studios and Disney, the threequel grossed an estimated $62.6 million from 4,450 theaters in its sophomore outing, a mere 47 percent decline and more than enough to crush the competition (that’s up from Sunday’s estimate of $60.5 million, a 49 percent decline). In more good news, the pic crossed the $200 million mark domestically to finish Sunday with a cume of $215.6 million.
Overseas, Guardians 3 took in another $91.9 million from 52 markets for a foreign tally of $315.6 million — including a pleasing $58.4 million from China — and $530.9 million globally.

Many new movies were released nationwide over Mother’s Day weekend, not that you’d know it, based on how poorly most of them did, trying to take on Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3” in its second weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After a moderately decent opening weekend, the conclusion of James Gunn‘s outer space superhero trilogy remained in first place for a second weekend with $60.5 million, down just 49% from its opening weekend, the best a Marvel movie has held up since the pandemic. Over the weekend, it crossed $200 million domestic with $213.2 million, but it has continued to do bigger business overseas, allowing it to cross the $500 million mark worldwide in less than two weeks. This weekend, it made another $91.9 million internationally to bring its global total to $528.8 million, with $315.6 million of that coming from overseas markets. We’ll have to see...
