About a week ago, I published the article “Oliver Stone’s JFK Made Me A Creepy Kid, And Now A Disappointed Adult.” In it, I wrote about my teen years as a “JFK assassination buff,” a nascent fascination that Stone’s 1991 film stoked into a slightly morbid obsession. It was a piece about how my adolescent hours of…

Will Ferrell is no stranger to changing up his look in order to fully get into character. After all, as an experienced Saturday Night Live veteran and successful actor, that’s pretty much par for the course. Whether that means donning a pointy cap and tights to play an adopted elf from Santa’s workshop, perfecting the art of playing the flute while ice skating around in a fur coat, or strapping himself into a corset and growing out his goatee to play the world’s most evil fashion designer, there’s nothing Ferrell wouldn’t be willing to do to fully get into character.

In his heyday, director/producer Ovidio Assonitis was affectionately known as “The Rip-Off King” due to his blatant copying of popular, more expensive hit films. Thus, we have Beyond the Door (1974), an Exorcist-style film; Tentacles (1977), a killer octopus film in the vein of Jaws; and even the sequel Piranha II: The Spawning (1981), which he famously directed after firing James Cameron shortly after filming commenced. Always on the lookout for the next big idea in exploitation, it isn’t surprising that he would also jump on the slasher bandwagon as well. Madhouse is Assonitis’ entry into that particular subgenre of film.
Though produced in late 1980 or early 1981 in Savannah, Georgia, Madhouse wasn’t released stateside until 1983. So while the film bears more than a passing resemblance to the classic slasher Happy Birthday to Me (also made in 1981), it is unclear how much of a direct rip-off one film is of the other.

A Batman movie in which John Lithgow plays the Joker is one of movies’ great “what ifs.” Some time ago, Joe Dante revealed that if he had made a Batman movie the 3rd Rock From The Sun actor—now probably more closely associated with The Crown—would have been his choice for the villain. Now, Lithgow himself explains in an interview with Vulture that he also auditioned for Tim Burton—but only to convince the director that he shouldn’t get the part. “My worst audition was for Tim Burton for Batman,” he said. “I have never told anyone this story, but I tried to persuade him I was not right for the part, and I succeeded. I didn’t realize it was such a big deal. About a week later I heard they were going after Robin Williams and Jack Nicholson.” Obviously, the latter got the role.

John Lithgow is still kicking himself for not taking the Joker role in Batman. Lithgow shares his story with Yahoo Films, and says he reportedly talked himself out of a job to Tim Burton.
“I have never told anyone this story, but I tried to persuade him I was not right for the part, and I succeeded. I didn’t realize it was such a big deal. About a week later I heard they were going after Robin Williams and Jack Nicholson.”
I can't imagine John Lithgow playing the Joker, so I'm happy he ultimately passed on it, but it does make you wonder if the film would be as successful with Lithgow in the headlining role. What do you think? Would Lithgow make a good Joker?...

John Lithgow twice got close to the role of The Joker in Batman in the 1980s. Both times? It didn't quite work out...
Back when Tim Burton was making the first modern Batman movie, that would eventually be released in the summer of 1989, he would eventually cast Jack Nicholson in the role of The Joker. However, Nicholson was one of several actors considered for the role, and in a new chat, John Lithgow has been talking about when he too was considered for the part.
Initially, when Joe Dante was set to make Batman in the mid-1980s, Lithgow was said to be the top choice to play The Joker at that stage. But as he told Vulture, “I was doing M Butterfly on Broadway and it was an exhausting show. It would have meant leaving that show and going right into a movie, and I said...

Over the years, the Joker has become one of the most iconic villains of any medium, and on the big screen in particular, we’ve seen some extremely memorable portrayals of the Clown Prince of Crime. From Jack Nicholson’s take on the character back in 1989’s Batman to Heath Ledger’s Academy Award winning work for The Dark Knight, whenever Mr. J shows up, it’s always worth taking notice of, and that’s usually because of the individuals chosen to bring him to life.
While nowadays we’re most familiar with the two aforementioned actors’ work in the role, if things had turned out differently, we may have seen John Lithgow in the purple suit. That’s right, the actor flirted with the part at one point in his career, ultimately choosing to turn it down – something he still regrets to this day. And really, can you blame him?...

As retirements go, Steven Soderbergh’s lasted just a little longer than Terry Funk’s. That’s in part because the prolific writer/director never stopped working after “Behind the Candelabra,” even if his masterful work on “The Knick” aired on the small screen rather than the silver one. He’s returning to feature filmmaking with this summer’s “Logan Lucky,” which he says he decided to direct because he “couldn’t bear the thought of somebody else getting to do it.”

The Star Wars franchise certainly seems to be making some real bold decisions as of late. Rogue One saw the elimination of the text crawl (not to mention the inclusion of time jumps, and a few other narrative quirks) and the inclusion of bigger-than-normal celebrities such as Forest Whitaker, Felicity Jones, and Donnie Yen. Of course, Rogue One was only the beginning, and we were bound to see some other big changes and even bigger names as we worked our way through the ever-growing galaxy far, far away.

"She gave me a lot of advice," she continued. "One of the...

Stan Lee’s Los Angeles Comic Con
Los Angeles Convention Center
Los Angeles, CA
Oct. 28-30, 2016
About a week ago I had the opportunity to attend my first Stan Lee’s Los Angeles Comic Con (formally known as Stan Lee’s Comikaze) and being that I attend so many shows throughout the year I didn’t really know what to expect. Would there be something at this show that set it apart from the others? Well for me personally there was one Huge difference and that was seeing the legendary Stan Lee in person, due to the importance of his contributions to comics and pop culture throughout the years not to mention his recent decline in appearances due to his age. As I arrived early to the convention center it was evident that it was going to be a full house. In a recent...

Here we go, folks. We’re in the pivotal last couple months until Assassin’s Creed hits theaters. By all accounts, that should be the film to hit it big at the box office and put an end to the decades-long curse that has plagued video game movies. When this happens, no studio wants to be caught with their pants down, and will want to be as far along in development of their own respective properties so that they may capitalize on this success.
As such, it’s no surprise that Sony Pictures decided now, of all times, was the right time to hire director Shawn Levy to helm the Uncharted film, which is based on the video game franchise of the same name.
For some time, it was assumed that The Grey director Joe Carnahan would direct the film, since he was the one brought on board to write the screenplay.

Fact: Celebs have gorgeous skin—but, sometimes, it takes more than just night creams to get there. Red-carpet-worthy complexions that glow from every angle are very intentional. Sure, A-listers have hardcore skin-care regimens in general, but when it comes awards-show prep, they step up their game even more. About a week out, the stars do bonus treatments to ensure their skin is as plump and blemish-free on big days like the Emmys, which just so happens to be this Sunday. To find out how exactly they're prepping their faces for that day-of flawless glow, we had a consultation with Dr. Nancy Samolitis of Facile Dermatology + Boutique, a dreamy skin clinic (just look...

About a week ago, I caught a screening of Snowden, but the embargo was still in place. Now, I can more comfortably say that it’s quite good, easily Oliver Stone’s best film in some time. Not only that, it’s a top notch role for and performance by Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the title part. Snowden has been looming for almost a year now, threatening to be a potential player in the Oscar race, and now that it’s about to hit this weekend, I can safely say that it’s a very strong film. As for its Academy Award prospects, well…that remains to be seen. For those unaware, this biopic is a look at Edward Snowden (played here by Gordon-Levitt), who we see go from dedicated work in the military that’s cut short by injury to the work with the CIA and intelligence community that will make him famous/infamous.

About a week ago, Ben Affleck stirred up some hype for the Justice League movie universe by tweeting out a mysterious video of somebody dressed as Deathstroke, DC Comics’ preeminent one-eyed mercenary with a passion for bright orange. Affleck didn’t provide any other details, but word eventually got around that Deathstroke—a.k.a. Slade Wilson—would be the villain in Affleck’s solo Batman movie. Now, The Wall Street Journal has confirmed that Deathstroke will be played by Magic Mike star Joe Manganiello, with the report also revealing that it was even Manganiello wearing the suit in Affleck’s video.
That information came from a chat with DC Entertainment’s Geoff Johns, who wouldn’t say much beyond that, including whether or not Slade would make a cameo in the Justice League movie or when the Batman movie might be released. That means Affleck’s tweet might be...

In theory, the idea of a massive cross-medium Marvel Cinematic Universe seems like a great one. A world where Spider-Man and Iron Man can co-exist with Daredevil and Luke Cage? Awesome! Sign me up! That certainly seemed to be exactly what Marvel was doing when they created their first series, Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., and when the Netflix-verse was announced, many fans dreamed of when Avengers: Infinity War Part 2 would bring together everyone to take on the big bad Thanos.
But something strange started happening. Sure, things were happening in the Marvel movies that reverberated throughout the TV universe at Marvel (the destruction of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the events in The Avengers are the big standouts), but the whole thing felt incredibly one-sided. Agent Coulson still isn't really alive in the films, and nothing in TV had any effect on the movies. Add into that the perceived...

This beauty queen isn't going down without a fight. About a week after Genesis Davila won the title of Miss Florida USA 2017, she was stripped of her crown. The pageant accused the Puerto Rican model of violating one of the regulations from the organization: You cannot have your hair and makeup professionally done. "We have a zero-tolerance policy on rules," said Grant Gravitt, executive producer of the Miss Florida USA pageant, to Miami's Local 10. "Whether it's something major or minor, it's all about keeping an equal and level playing field. Unfortunately, our title holder sought an unfair competitive advantage, and that's just not acceptable in our system." Now...

As you all know, at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, Groot sacrificed himself to save his friends. Thankfully, he didn’t die. Instead, he started to regrow. When we pick up with him in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 he’s a little baby Groot, and he's insanely adorable. He also still knows how to kick ass, though, just in a different way.
About a week ago an official piece of concept art was released giving us our first look at Groot on the shoulder of Drax. In a previous interview with executive producer Jonathan Schwartz he offered some insight on Groot saying:
“He doesn’t have the wisdom and experience of that Groot. He’s a younger Groot and a more rambunctious Groot. The question is, is he the same Groot, just smaller? Or is he a different Groot that’s sprung up from the seed of the first Groot?...

Sidney Lumet’s 1982 courtroom masterpiece “The Verdict” is oft-referenced today in regard to Paul Newman’s show-stopping performance, but it’s the script — the construction — that’s marked the film’s indelible impact on storytelling. Newman plays Frank Galvin, an alcoholic ambulance chaser trying to scrounge together whatever money he can to keep the lights on, when he’s handed an easy payday: a comatose client whose family is suing for malpractice. The case is expected to settle out of court — and net Frank a fat check for very little work — but upon seeing the woman lying there, helpless, left to die or live out her days on a respirator, a fire is rekindled within the once prominent lawyer. He takes the case to trial, against the advice of his peers and the wishes of his clients, leading to a verdict that only really matters to him: Was Frank right...

About a week ago, a piece of promo art for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was spotted in San Diego for Comic-Con. It featured a long flaming chain, which led fans to speculate that maybe Ghost Rider would be showing up in the series. I figured it would just be a story arc involving Hellfire, who also sports a flaming chain, but now it's starting to look like a version of Ghost Rider will show up after all!
A new casting notice that leaked recently suggests that Ghost Rider will make an appearance in the series, but it's not a version of the character you would expect. The most iconic version of Ghost Rider is Johnny Blaze, who was portrayed by Nicolas Cage in two films. He's not the only version of the character that has existed in the comics, though.
The characters mentioned in the casting notice are listed as a pair of Latino brothers.

About a week ago, we found out that the sequel to Denis Villeneuve's tense, ruthless drug thriller Sicario is called Soldado, it's set to be directed by Stefano Sollima, and the film will focus on Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin's characters from the first movie. Now Sollima has given an interview to The Independent (via The Playlist) in which he reveals that a third movie is in the works, even though Soldado hasn't started filming yet:
"The idea is to make three anthology movies with some of the core actors and [set] in the same world."
That's a cool idea, and justifies the decision to leave Emily Blunt's character out of the second movie even though she was the main character in the first film. It makes you wonder if supporting characters like Victor Garber's character are going to play larger roles this time around, or even pop up again in the third film to keep the world consistent.
Sollima talked a little bit about Soldado and how audiences won't need to have seen Sicario to appreciate it:
"It's not a real sequel. It's absolutely a standalone movie - a completely different story with just two of the characters that you met in Sicario. The reason that I love [Soldado] is because it's not exactly a sequel; it's something you can catch and enjoy even if you haven't watched the first one.
I loved Sicario. I feel the movie was quite similar to my approach so, to me, I'm just shooting another movie. Soldado will be much more cinematic than Sicario was; it's got an incredible amount of huge action sequences in there. It will be a different journey in the same world. Even the theme is different - it's not drug dealing, it's more on immigration."
That's a big claim: Sicario was pretty damn cinematic, so I'll be interested to see if Sollima and his team will be able to outdo Villeneuve and cinematographer Roger Deakins, who both moved on to Blade Runner 2. Soldado doesn't have a release date yet, but we'll keep you posted.

Actor Daniel Craig hasn't exactly been quiet regarding how burnt out he is on playing James Bond for a fifth time. Perhaps the most extreme comments he made was several months back to Yahoo!, when he said:
“I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists… I’m over it at the moment. We’re done. All I want to do is move on.[...]"For at least a year or two, I just don’t want to think about it. I don’t know what the next step is. I’ve no idea. Not because I’m trying to be cagey. Who the f— knows? At the moment, we’ve done it. I’m not in discussion with anybody about anything. If I did another Bond movie, it would only be for the money.”
Ever since his comments, many have assumed that Spectre would be his last go at Bond,...

Arsenio Hall has brought a $5 million defamation lawsuit against Sinead O'Connor over the singer's recent Facebook post accusing him of being the one to supply Prince with drugs. In a complaint filed on Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, Hall rips into O'Connor as a "desperate, attention-seeker ... now known perhaps as much for her bizarre, unhinged internet rants as for her music." O'Connor's biggest hit was "Nothing Compares 2 U," a cover version of a Prince composition released in 1990. About a week after Prince died in Minneapolis, O'Connor wrote that Prince was a "long time hard drug user" who

First up, in case you hadn't already heard, HBO has officially renewed Game of Thrones, Silicon Valley, and Veep for new seasons that will air in 2017. That's obviously good news if you're a fan of those shows, so raise a glass to celebrate another year of (hopefully) quality television.
Now, on to the matter at hand. About a week ago, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said they guessed they had about thirteen more episodes to go after season six before the series came to an end. Now, in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, they're saying that number may have changed:
"We realized we'd probably catch the books when we spent several days with George [R.R. Martin] in Santa Fe in 2013, discussing the future of the book series and the television series. George's schedule is very much his own, as it should be for a novelist. But...

Now that we have had a small dose of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman as she fought alongside the Caped Crusader and the Man of Steel in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the anticipation to see her fly solo in the 2017 standalone movie has certainly been amplified.
