Should we expect a war of words between Donald Trump and Lavar Ball now? For those that are interested this could get good. Of course that’s a very subjective term since more often than not both men are the type of individuals that a lot of people don’t want to listen to or even hear about. But in this case, brace yourself for it, Donald Trump actually made sense with what he said. Take a moment to mull that over, lean against a wall if the unexpected woozy feeling comes over you from realizing that Trump did in fact say
Donald Trump and Lavar Ball: This is Going to Be Good...

It’s a wonder movie from the 1930s, a political fantasy that imagines a Utopia of peace and kindness hidden away in a distant mountain range — or in our daydreams. Sony’s new restoration is indeed impressive. Ronald Colman is seduced by a vision of a non-sectarian Heaven on Earth, while Savant indulges his anti-Frank Capra grumblings in his admiring but hesitant review essay.

Chicago – The year caught up with me. 2013 was characterized by a soft start and a strong finish, but overall there were impressive contenders throughout the year and some fine examples of great storytelling and filmmaking. Risks were taken, some truth emerged and even in more “mainstream” films, there were flashes of promise.
This is the second set of top ten 2013 films on HollywoodChicago.com, as offered by film critic Patrick McDonald. Please also sample my colleague Brian Tallerico’s Top Ten. The following films are a testament to the experiences they gave me, what they made me think about afterward and how they fulfilled that feeling – for me – of what makes a movie great.
For every film in those ten spots, there are a number of other films coming in tied at number 11 – Joe Swanberg’s sublime “Drinking Buddies” and the anarchy of “Escape From Tomorrow”; the gutsy honesty of...

WikiLeaks founder to judge films at the 21st Raindance Film Festival; 2013 line-up unveiled.Scroll down for full line-up of films
Julian Assange has joined the jury of the 21st Raindance Film Festival (Sept 25 - Oct 6), a London-based event that celebrates independent film in the UK and around the world.
The appointment is a controversial one. The Australian editor-in-chief and founder of WikiLeaks took refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London in June 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning about sexual assault allegations.
It is understood that he fears Sweden would extradite him to the Us, where he believes he is wanted in relation to WikiLeaks’ disclosure of a significant amount of classified Us military and diplomatic documents.
Commenting on Assange’s appointment, Raindance founder Elliot Grove said: “Every year Raindance invites interesting people to join our jury. In the past we have had musicians like Mick Jones, Marky Ramone and [link...

Chicago – Every once in awhile, a year feels like it just belongs to a certain actor or actress. 2011 was the year of Jessica Chastain. It looks like 2013 could be the year of Amy Seimetz. She’s starring in the now-playing (and brilliant) “Upstream Color,” will appear on HBO’s “Family Tree” and AMC’s “The Killing” in the next few months, stars in the indie “Be Good” and acclaimed horror film “You’re Next,” and, this week, her directorial debut, “Sun Don’t Shine,” lands on VOD and in NY theaters before an expansion later this year. Like seemingly everything that Seimetz touches lately, it’s great. Confident, stylish, and with a remarkable sense of place, “Sun Don’t Shine” truly works.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
“Sun Don’t Shine” opens with a fight. Crystal (Kate Lyn Sheil) and Leo (Kentucker Audley) are clearly under an immense amount of stress and not handling it well.

Writer-director Todd Looby's Be Good begins as Mary (Amy Seimetz) prepares to return to work after being on an abbreviated maternity leave. Since Mary's husband Paul (Thomas J. Madden) works from home as an independent filmmaker, he will watch the baby while Mary works. Paul begins his first day of solo parenting with a naive air of self-confidence. He plops the baby on the floor of his office and begins working on his screenplay. It does not take very long before Paul discovers that solo parenting is not as easy as it looks, especially when the baby requires constant attention and refuses to sleep. Paul is only able to write for brief spurts of time, primarily whenever Mary is home from work. Of course this means even less restful downtime for Paul, making him an exhausted ball of stress; it also means that Mary and Paul have no alone time together.

Chicago – Possibly one of the most perplexing times of life is the aftermath of the couple having their first child. The anticipation and joy quickly morphs into the reality of lifelong responsibility and care. Writer/Director Todd Looby captures that reality succinctly in his latest film, “Be Good.”
Rating: 4.0/5.0
This independent feature is beautifully composed and more importantly, expansive. Looby uses the neighborhoods, parks and public transportation systems of Chicago to full measure, giving the story of a mother going back to work, and leaving a six month year old child in her husband’s care, a broader scope than imagined from such a description. There is a light touch in the story, as to the normalcy and odd quirks that happen when lives of the parents become irreversibly altered in caring for a baby. It’s a tale as old as humankind itself, but Looby gives it a spin...

Chicago – Wildly prolific indie filmmaker Joe Swanberg (“Hannah Takes the Stairs,” “Uncle Kent”) will return to his hometown of Chicago on Thursday, July 5th, for a double feature of two new films, “Caitlin Plays Herself” and “Marriage Material.” The event kicks off at 8pm at Chicago Filmmakers, 5243 N. Clark St., and will include a live Q&A with Swanberg himself.
Both pictures center on seemingly content relationships that have reached a potential crossroads. “Caitlin Plays Herself” was one of six films that Swanberg made in 2011 (the others are “Uncle Kent,” “The Zone,” “Silver Bullets,” “Autoerotic” and “Art History”). It stars Caitlin Stainken (of Neo-Futurist fame) as an actress whose provocative performance art pieces cause her boyfriend (Swanberg) to feel uncomfortable. It’s her nude performance inspired by the Bp oil spill that pushes him over the edge. 2012’s “Marriage Material,” which made its viral debut in January, explores the repercussions...

Chicago – One of the Chicago filmmakers to watch is Todd Looby. The director, who has won awards for his short film “Son of None” at Slamdance 2011 and the Boston Film Festival, premieres his latest feature film, “Be Good,” on June 22nd at the Gene Siskel Film Center in Chicago.
Looby has been producing films since 2007, when his first feature, “The Site,” was screened at the Iowa Independent Film Festival. His second film, “Lefty” (2009), was recognized as one of the Top 10 Movies of 2009 by Chicago Tribune’s Metromix. He followed that up with his award-winning short “Son of None” (2010), which he produced while filming a web series in Liberia. “Be Good,” is a personal statement, based on his own experiences becoming a new father.
The film is an excellent slice-of-life regarding new parenting and those first few months. Paul (Thomas J. Madden), is a stay-at-home Dad, while his wife Mary (Amy Seimetz...

#06. Be Good - Todd Looby Writer-director Todd Looby has been to Park City before - presenting his 2011 documentary short, Son of None at Sundance's competing festival, Slamdance. With Amy Seimetz - the hardest working film person in the biz cast with the inclusion of a bit part for Joe Swanberg, Be Good - a low budget Diy dramedy certainly looks, in this era of Go the F**k to Sleep parenting, like comedic material we'd find in Sundance's Next section. Currently in post (see production update vid here and indiegogo updates here) if not included in the January fest, this example of micro-filmmaking (includes Looby's infant child as one of the actors) could definitely find a spot in SXSW. Gist: Paul (Thomas Madden) is 35 year-old independent filmmaker who has achieved moderate success – enough to convince a New York Times Bestselling author to adapt his latest book, but not enough to earn income from his craft.
