Mother nature 's son (and daughter)
In Mauritius , two women , who were born worlds apart in the ancien régime France , break the social barriers: a peasant and an aristocrat , who have to fight for their life , for they have both a child to care , the heroes of the story :Paul ,the illegitimate child ,and Virginie , a fallen noble's daughter ;both own a slave , Domingue and Marie they consider members of the family .
Paul and Virginie are mother nature's children ; Bernard De Saint-Pierre was strongly influenced by Rousseau who thought that man was naturally good, and corrupted by a selfish ruthless society.
But the outside world infiltrates the paradise where the children, now teenagers ,live,in the shape of a "marron " female slave ( a term used for slaves who were escaping ) whose bruised back shows her master's cruelty .
This episode is faithful to De Saint-Pierre 's spirit : although he denounced the horrors of slavery in his studies based on his travels -and was blamed by his compatriots- , never,in "Paul Et Virginie " ,the principle of slavery is called into question :it's a fait accompli ; it was written in 1788 ,just before the French Revolution ,but slavery , this shame upon humanity, survived in France colonies till 1848....
