- Beginning of the journey in Monsanto: Sophie meets Rubn André Silva, the photographer: they cross the Door of the Saint Spirit and walk in the streets of the village: they meet Adriana, the old lady who is a friend of the grandmother of Ruben and tells some memories.Then they arrive at the shop called "Artesanato" where a woman shows them the "marafonas", rag dolls which are used as amulets.Ruben and Sophie admire the houses built between the granite rocks (spontaneous architecture) and they arrive at the castle where they enjoy the panorama.In the morning Andreia Machado (Ruben's wife) who manages the guesthouse,offers Sophie dried pears: Andreia explains that she enjoys her new life near the nature: she offers natural products of the region to her guests.Then Ruben and Sophie travel to Idanha-a-Nova: they visit the workshop of José Rego Relvas who makes the famous "adufes"; tambourines made with goat skin (in square shape) and generally played by women.On a place Ruben and Sophie meet Maria, Rosa and other women who play the "adufe" and sing a traditional song.Back to Monsanto Sophie meets Hélène (Taverna lusitana) , a French woman married with a Portuguese man who manage now a bar in Monsanto: they make a toast with beers for the revival of the region.On the next day Sophie is with Luis Coelho, the mountain guide, in Piódao: a village with houses made with schist stones and something special all the doors and windows are painted in blue.They meet an old man singing and Sophie buys him a miniature house.On the the main place of the village they see again these miniature houses (many tourists come to this village).They follow the walk through the hills and see a beautiful natural swimming pool.After that Sophie is in Linhares da Beira with Paulo Mimoso (chef of the "Cava da Loba"): they travel by car and pay a visit to Francisco Da Silva, a farmer and buy tomatoes, and zucchinis: they taste also pears; later they pay a visit to Margarida, the cheese-maker and taste the sheep cheese (Paulo says that it's the best cheese in the world).Later they visit the castle which is in the middle of the National Park of the Serra da Estrela.Later they have a walk through the protected forest (chesnut-trees) and arrive at the top of a mountain: they meet there Carlos Almeida, the paragliding instructor and have a paragliding flight over Linhares da Beira.Finally they arrive at the "Casa da Loba where they meet Elisabete (Ruben's wife) and José A. Mimoso , Ruben's brother who lives in the United States, they speak about the rural exodus (for about 40 years the government of Salazar didn't do anything to stop this exodus) and make a toast to the renewal of the region. On the next day Sophie meets Ana Berliner (Casa da Cisterna) and they visit the "Faia Brava", the first private nature serve of Portugal (about 1.200 hectares): they see the griffon vultures and later wild horses and enjoy the panorama over the region of Castelo Rodrigo.Then Ana Berliner tells Sophie about the village fair: they meet women who are preparing the community meal (green beans): there are workshops with professional cooks: in one place women prepare orange salads with olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper, in another place the women learn to prepare loaf of bread with fishes , squids or lamb meat: then in the night there are tables and benches in the streets of Castelo and the people of the village and their relatives enjoy the the community meal (green beans soap).Finally Sophie ends her journey in the fortress of Almeida speaking about the love of these Portuguese people for their villages and their mutual aid.
