An instant classic for the 1990's generation thanks to its inclusion in the mega-hit soap opera "A Próxima Vítima" ("The Next Victim") where it really
fit like a glove to the murder mystery scenario created by the show, the song "Vítima" was in fact composed and released ten years earlier in the great album
"Rita & Roberto" and it also got a music video conceived for a forgotten TV show. Like the TV series, the video was also directed by Jorge Fernando and here
he directs the couple Rita Lee and Roberto de Carvalho creating dangerous scenarios for both of them where they follow each other around São Paulo, city that
is mentioned in the lyrics.
Both Lee and Carvalho play killers of each other, peeping tom's of each other while spying each other as several different characters observing one
another in one particular known building located at the city's downtown - where the majority of the clip was filmed. The video makes references to Hitchcock's
classics "Psycho" (the famous shower scene) and "Rear Window" (the use of telescope when Rita spy on her neighbors and watches a murder happening where she
plays the victim of Roberto). There's dark elements but also some sense of comedy while they perform the sequences - some will find it quite lame and
underperformed but that's the spirit of the decade, things weren't taken so seriously.
And if the video doesn't make the cut for you at least the suspenseful song can definitely get your attention, specially if you haven't heard it before.
Inspired lyrics filled with twisted thoughts of violent acts, the contrast made with the city of São Paulo and its dangers, some passionate romance intertwined...
there's so many elements that make a very original song, along with the rhythm created from the haunting bass lines, the percussion from the great Paulinho da Costa
alligned with the complex drums from João Barone ("Os Paralamas do Sucesso") it all makes a great experience to be heard. A favorite musical moment of mine, and one that never gets old. 10/10.
