Take your pick. There have been countless film and TV productions adapting Alexandre Dumas’ classic 19th century tale of revenge and deception, The Count of Monte Cristo. We have seen it in different versions in 1934, 1954, 1975, 2002 and probably up to 15 more iterations. Now we have the latest, the lavish widescreen French production Le Comte de Monte-Cristo, which had its world premiere Wednesday night Out of Competition to a wildly approving full audience at the Grand Lumiere — an appropriate place to launch this film as the screen might be the best in the world, and this movie is big.
In addition to all those past film versions on the book, there are countless other movies that have stolen from this complexly plotted tale. For some reason I kept thinking of the Ocean’s movies as, like this, they involve lots of complicated plotting, and once our title character begins planning his revenge...

“The Hyperboreans,” the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight entry from Chile, defines the inventive works that have emerged from this small nation. Many of its films touch on traumatic national events of the past but play with rarely explored genres in the region. Case in point: the country’s recent Oscar submission, “The Settlers,” about Chile’s bloody colonial 1901 battle in its south, is a neo-Western.
Helmed by animation mavens Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña, “The Hyperboreans” (“Los Hiperbóreos”) combines live action and stop-motion animation in a story that also stands out for its singularity. In it, Chilean actress and psychologist Antonia Giesen films a script from her patient’s mind, leading to a reality-bending spiral when she discovers it originates from Nazi poet Miguel Serrano.
“We planned this as an exhibition of the filming process at an art gallery in Chile, so we filmed this in a single space and with only one actress,...

The age of superhero movies is over. The time of the vampire has come. For anyone jonesing for Hollywood to put its muscle behind a new genre fixation these days that doesn't have to do with spandex and leather -- okay, so that definition also applies to vampire movies like the "Underworld" franchise, but just work with me here, people -- the last few years have put an intriguing contender into the mix. The last year alone has seen films like "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," "Renfield," the somewhat underrated "El Conde," and most recently "Abigail" all stake their claim (puns!) to ushering in a renaissance of sorts for everybody's favorite blood-sucking monsters, with high-profile projects like Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" and the untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan vampire movie still on the way.

J.A. Bayona’s Netflix epic Society of the Snow swept Saturday night’s Platino Awards, picking up a total of six trophies including the top award of the night for best Ibero-American fiction film.
Bayona’s film follows the tragic events that take place after Uruguayan Air Force flight 571, chartered to fly a rugby team to Chile, crashes on a glacier in the heart of the Andes in 1972. Only 16 of the 45 passengers ultimately made it out alive as a handful of others perished on the mountain during the 72 days from the time of the crash until rescuers arrived.
Bayona also made his way to the stage to accept a trophy for best director, and his film’s haul also included best male performance for star Enzo Vogrincic, best editing for Jaume Marti and Andres Gil, best cinematography for Pedro Luque, and best sound for Oriol Tarragó, Marc Orts and Jorge Adrados.

In a triumphant night for Spain, J.A. Bayona’s Oscar-nominated “Society of the Snow” swept the top prizes at Platino Xcaret, named after the venue of the annual Platino Awards this year, which took place at the Xcaret Park, Riviera Maya, Mexico.
Argentina cinema’s plight, exacerbated by far-right president Javier Milei’s closure of its film institute, Incaa, was also on many people’s minds.
Citing veteran Argentine filmmaker Adolfo Aristarain as one of his inspirations, Bayona said upon receiving his best director award: “Argentina, we are here standing by your side, you’re not alone.”
Bayona’s harrowing account of the 1972 Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 crash, from which only 16 people survived after 72 days stranded in the Andes, became Netflix’s second most-viewed non-English film of all time. “I wouldn’t be here without the book that Pablo Vierci wrote,” said Bayona, who also thanked his cast and crew,...

Standout Paris-based sales outfit Luxbox (“1976”) has acquired international sales rights to the debut solo feature effort from Chilean multi-hyphenate Vinko Tomičić Salinas(“Durmiente”),“The Dog Thief” (“El Ladrón de Perros”), which bows in the international narrative competition at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival, running June 5-16.
The film follows an adolescent shoe shining orphan, Martín (Franklin Aro Huasco), in his quest to get closer to Mr. Novoa, a lonely tailor in town whom he believes is his father.
After a twisted ruse is hatched to excuse his further prying, the teen winds up against a wall in a situation that could cause him to lose the nascent, yet budding, relationship.

Fremantle has renewed its first-look partnership with Chilean production company Fabula in a deal that will see the companies develop a slate of original dramas and films. Fremantle’s international sales wing, Fmi, will distribute the drama projects worldwide.
Fabula and Fremantle have just wrapped production on Sebabstián Lelio’s film musical The Wave, in partnership with Participant Media, which tells the story of the mass protests and university rallies that took place during Chile’s so-called “feminist May” in 2018.
Later this year they will launch Pablo Larraín’s Maria starring Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas, produced alongside Fremantle and Germany’s Komplizen Film.

Non-English-language movies stormed the Oscars this year, with five films taking home statuettes — the most ever in one ceremony.
Justine Triet and Arthur Harari’s Best Screenplay Academy Award for French-language courtroom drama Anatomy of a Fall followed three past non-English-language winners: Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite (2019), Pedro Almodóvar’s Talk To Her (2002) and A Man and a Woman by Claude Lelouch and Pierre Uytterhoeven (1966).
The Best Sound Academy Award for Jonathan Glazer’s German-language Holocaust drama The Zone of Interest marked a first for a non-English-language film. The pic also clinched Best International Feature Film.

Another Oscars season is over. The 96th Academy Awards have wrapped, and the full 2024 Oscars winners list has been revealed.
“Oppenheimer” had an air of inevitability about it unlike few Best Picture contenders in recent memory: IndieWire’s Anne Thompson predicted it would win seven Oscars tonight, including the top prize. And indeed it did, nabbing seven statuettes overall. But the triumphs for “Oppenheimer” at the Golden Globes, the Critics Choice Awards, the BAFTAs, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards suggested it was the film to beat, by any standard.
“Oppenheimer” also received the most nominations overall, with 13. Its seven wins were for: Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, and Best Picture — the most of any film tonight. The next-most nominations was 11 for “Poor Things,” and then 10 for “Killers of the Flower Moon.

My, how much the race has evolved since the 96th Oscars nominations were announced January 23. We won’t say changed, since it seems like the certain sure bets at that time have become even surer bets. You all know “Oppenheimer,” long considered a frontrunner in many categories,” received the most nominations then with 13, followed by “Poor Things” with 11 and “Killers of the Flower Moon” with 10. Well, tonight, this evening of Sunday March 10 at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles at 7:00pm Et, we’re finally gonna see if what we all assume to be true is actually going to pan out: That “Oppenheimer” is teed up for a very big night, as IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has predicted, with her final Oscar picks, herself.
“Oppenheimer” has won top honors at the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, BAFTAs, and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Surely Oscars domination is next, right?...

There are a lot of qualities that help a movie get Oscar-nominated: big-name stars, a prestigious director, a sharp script, and weighty subject matter. One big perk for a movie: looking really, really pretty.
Jokes aside, looks alone aren’t quite enough to guarantee a film makes it into Oscar contention. But they can often help. After all, great and thoughtful photography gives films a chance to compete in the Best Cinematography category, in which directors of photography and masters of their craft go head to head for a chance to receive one of the highest honors in their field. This year’s field is no exception, with all five men nominated — including “El Conde’s” Edward Lachman, “Killers of the Flower Moon’s” Rodrigo Prieto, “Maestro’s” Matthew Libatique, “Oppenheimer’s” Hoyte van Hoytema, and “Poor Things’” Robbie Ryan — having received prior nods from the Academy, although excitingly for the race,...

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Cinematography Oscar are “El Conde,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our odds currently favor “Oppenheimer” (31/10) taking the prize, followed in order by “Killers of the Flower Moon” (4/1), “Poor Things” (4/1), “Maestro” (9/2), and “El Conde” (9/2).
After 2013 and 2016, this is the third time that a 21st century cinematography lineup has exclusively consisted of previously nominated lensers. This case differs from the preceding two, however, in that none of the current contenders have ever won before. The one with the most losses so far is Rodrigo Prieto, whose bid for “Killers of the Flower Moon” is his third for a Martin Scorsese-directed film, following “Silence” (2017) and “The Irishman” (2020). Having initially earned a notice for his work on “Brokeback Mountain” (2006), he remains the category’s second most recognized Latin American-born nominee behind fellow Mexican Emmanuel Lubezki.

Following multiple nominations for “Anatomy of a Fall” and “The Zone of Interest,” industry insiders are excited for more “international” Academy Awards.
“The Oscars have been opening up to international filmmakers in recent years. I am happy to be one of them,” says Kaouther Ben Hania, nominated for doc “Four Daughters.”
“The Academy has made efforts to diversify its membership and nominations, leading to increased recognition for films from around the world. The expansion of categories like international feature film — formerly foreign-language film — and the inclusion of more international voices in other categories demonstrate a growing appreciation for global cinema,” Ben Hania adds.
“Let’s hope this becomes a trend, as audiovisual productions are increasingly global not only in their themes but also in their production models, which involve various countries for financing, artistic talents and technical expertise,” says Gabriela Sandoval, producer and president of Chile’s Assn. of Film and Television Producers.

Refresh for latest: Oppenheimer continued its romp through awards season by winning the top film prize at the American Society of Cinematographers’ 38th annual ASC Awards, which were handed out Sunday night at the Beverly Hilton. See the winners list below.
Hoyte van Hoytema won for Oppenheimer, which is up for Best Cinematography at the Oscars next weekend. He will vie against the same quartet he beat for the ASC prize: Edward Lachman for El Conde, Matthew Libatique for Maestro, Rodrigo Prieto for Killers of the Flower Moon and Robbie Ryan, Poor Things (Searchlight).
The group’s film winner has gone on to claim the Academy Award nearly half of the time — 17 times in its 37 years — but not last year. Mandy Walker won the ASC’s top film prize in 2023, but the Academy Award went to James Friend for All Quiet on the Western Front.

“Oppenheimer” cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema won Feature Film at the 38th ASC Awards, March 3 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. The Oscar favorite beat the other four Oscar nominees: “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” Poor Things,” and “El Conde”.
This marked van Hoytema’s first ASC win after three nominations (including “Dunkirk” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy”) and positions the Dutch-Swedish cinematographer for his first Oscar win. Significantly, “Oppenheimer” represents the culmination of his experimental IMAX collaboration with director Christopher Nolan. The duo achieved a new kind of intimate spectacle with this psychological thriller about physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Best Actor nominee Cillian Murphy), the “father of the atomic bomb.” Van Hoytema used the large-format IMAX camera to explore the landscape of faces; namely, Oppenheimer’s in color from his perspective and Salieri-like adversary Admiral Lewis Strauss’ (Best Supporting Actor nominee Robert Downey Jr.) in black-and-white from his.

American Cinematographer Ed Lachman will be the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Camerimage Film Festival.
Lachman was born on March 31, 1946. His grandfather owned several vaudeville theatres in the 1920s, which were later converted into movie houses, co-managed with Lachman’s father, a film theatre distributor who later acquired a small cinema in Boonton, New Jersey.
Lachman’s extensive filmography includes numerous collaborations with directors such as Todd Haynes, Ulrich Seidl (Import/Export), Steven Soderbergh (The Limey and Erin Brockovich), Gregory Nava and Paul Schrader. He served as the cinematographer on Sofia Coppola’s debut feature, The Virgin Suicides, and lensed A Prairie Home Companion, Robert Altman’s last film.
He is a three-time Oscar nominee for Far from Heaven, Carol, and Pablo Larrain’s El Conde.

Chilean film and TV shows scored 309 awards around the world in 2023, CinemaChile announced in January. One month later, CinemaChile, the national promotion board, is turning 15 at Berlin. The consequence of longterm uninterrupted promotion of an industry must not be underestimated.
Over the last 15 years, film and TV have seen two seismic revolutions: Streamers’ Dtc distribution; the explosive rise of production levels across the globe.
The latter has left huge hostages to fortune, suddenly underscoring the significance of national support orgs such as CinemaChile. Below, 10 points on CinemaChile by way of introduction to the often ignored missing link in the latest evolution of the international independent industry: National film agencies.
Why National Film Agencies Are So Useful These Days
In 2005, Argentina released 74 features, Brazil 73, Mexico 33 and Chile 11. Cut to 2022, and those figures had skyrocketed respectively to 230, 173, 88 and 38, a 176% increase in collective levels from 191 films to 529. As slews of films challenge for sales and theatrical release abroad,...

Argentine director Luján Loioco is prepping her third feature film, “Queen of the Woods” (“Reina del bosque”), starring Chile’s venerable Alfredo Castro, seen most recently in Pablo Larrain’s Oscar-nominated “El Conde,” and rising Argentine actress Delfina Chaves.
The story takes place in a cabin set against the snow-covered Patagonian mountains and is described as a “neo-horror feminine film that explores the failed relationship between a pregnant woman and her dying father.” Through the gripping mechanisms of thriller and neo-horror, the film delves deep into the theme of grief while posing unsettling reflections on the complexities of motherhood.
Principal photography is slated to start mid-2024 for a film that stands as a testament to the rise of women filmmakers in Latin America and their creative prowess.

Like most Oscar categories that have existed since the foundation of the Academy Awards, Best Cinematography has undergone several changes over the past near-century. The most significant one occurred in 1968, when films permanently stopped being separated into two categories based on whether they were shot in black-and-white or color. In the 56 years since that unification, 94% of Best Cinematography nominations have gone to color films, while just 18 black-and-white contenders have emerged. Scroll through our photo gallery to find out which movies belong to that special subset.
The films that qualify for this list are either entirely or primarily shot in black-and-white, with one example of the latter type being 1994 winner “Schindler’s List.” This excludes nominees that contain some black-and-white scenes but are mainly shot in color, such as 2024 contenders “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.”

Like we did with the cameras, now it’s the lenses’ turn. We made a chart with the lenses used to shoot the Oscars 2024 (96th Academy Awards) Best Picture and Cinematography nominees. The picture is clear. Panavision has no competition.
Oscars 2024: Lens Manufacturers chart
There’s no real competition for Panavision. This company is doing something right. Although Panavision lenses can not be purchased (rental-only glass), acclaimed DPs just love the lenses, and the excellent Panavision service as well.

Netflix scored 18 Oscar nominations for its 2023 films, with eight for feature films — the most of any distributor. All told, Netflix had nine nominations in top categories incuding Best Picture, International Film, Animated Feature, acting, and writing categories.
Not that Netflix’s domestic viewers seemed to notice. Since the Oscar nomination announcement January 23, not one nominated film reentered its top 10 most watched film list. Since then, two obscure titles have held the top spot: “The Hill,” a faith-based sports biopic that grossed under $8 million when it was released last summer, and “The Postcard Killings,” a 2020 home video-released European murder mystery directed by Oscar-winning director Denis Tanovic (“No Man’s Land”).
Nominees fared somewhat better in VOD viewing. Led by “Oppenheimer” (Universal), all five Best Picture nominees that are available to view and without a streaming alternative placed on at least one top 10 list.

Good afternoon Insiders, Max Goldbart here bringing you all the news and analysis from another busy week, during which we have been to Spain through Argentina via Berlin. Oh, and there was the small matter of the Oscar noms. Read on, and sign up here.
Spain In The Spotlight
Secuoya’s scale and pace: Diana Lodderhose kicking things off here and I had the pleasure of going to Madrid before the holidays to take a look at the impressive Secuoya Content Group’s headquarters, which hosts Netflix’s European Production Hub, located just 17 miles north of Madrid. After a lengthy chat with its owners and founders Raul Berdonés and Pablo Jimeno as well as James Costos, president of its TV and film fiction arm Secuoya Studios, what became quickly apparent is the scale and pace at which this company is moving. “We’re not your traditional production company,” Berdonés said.

Many factors drive an Oscar nomination, but a film’s release strategy can make the crucial difference.
“Oppenheimer” (13 nominations) and “Barbie” (8 nominations) stand out as brilliantly handled releases. Shutouts like “Origin” (Neon), “All of Us Strangers” (Searchlight), “Air” (Amazon), “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” (Apple), and “Saltburn” (MGM) prove that no distributor is immune.
However, when it comes to the distributors with the best track record, there are two: Disney had 20 nominations across Searchlight (12), 20th Century Studios (2), and 1 each for National Geographic Documentary Films, Pixar, Searchlight/Hulu/Disney+, Marvel, Lucasfilm, and Disney Branded Television and Disney+.
And then there’s Netflix, a behemoth that doesn’t do sub-brands. It had 18 nominations: 7 for “Maestro,” 2 each for “Nyad” and “Society of the Snow,” and 1 each for “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” “May December,” “American Symphony,” “The After,” “El Conde,” “Rustin,” and “Nimona.” Theatrical releases for all of these films were modest at best,...

One thing about vampires — being undead means you’re around for an awful lot of history. You might even, as in El Conde, the surreal and darkly funny political satire from acclaimed Chilean director Pablo Larraín, happen to also be a key player in major events yourself, and a particularly abhorrent tyrant at that, accused of numerous human rights abuses during your long rule. And, perhaps, you’re also a literal monster. Specifically, a bloodsucking monster who lives long enough to want to change your ways — or, at least, to change the way the world may remember you.
In El Conde, the count of the film’s title (played by beloved Chilean actor Jaime Vadell) is none other than the notorious Augusto Pinochet, who seized power of Chile in a coup d’état 50 years ago on Sept. 11, 1973. In the film, he’s not dead but, in fact, an elder vampire...

“Oppenheimer,” Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster IMAX spectacle and Best Picture frontrunner, dominated the Oscar craft derby with seven nominations on January 23. The historical thriller about theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) — the conflicted “father of the atomic bomb” — nearly ran the field with cinematography, costume design, production design, makeup and hairstyling, editing, score, and sound. The only misfire was getting snubbed as a visual effects finalist (it did not compete for original song).
Following right behind with six noms were Best Picture nominees “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things.” Martin Scorsese’s epic historical drama about the Osage Nation murders in 1920s Oklahoma exceeded expectations. It was honored for cinematography, costume design, production design, editing (a record ninth nomination for three-time winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker), score (for the late Robbie Robertson), and, in a surprise, original song for “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” by Scott George.

Immediately following the announcement of the 2024 Oscar nominations, our forums were flooded with reactions from our notoriously opinionated posters, many of whom are industry insiders shielded by screen names. As in previous years, the recognition of certain movies and artists elicited jubilant praise, while the exclusion (and inclusion) of others sparked disappointment and even fury.
The vastly varied response to this year’s roster of Oscar contenders proves once again that the academy can’t please all film fans. Below is just a sampling of our sassy forum posters’ brutally honest comments regarding the 2024 nominees. Take a look, then join the conversation if you dare.

The Academy has confirmed to Deadline that this is the first time two international foreign-language movies have been nominated for Best Picture in the same year and the first time that two foreign-language movies have received five Oscar nominations apiece in the same year.
Justine Triet’s contemporary courtroom thriller Anatomy Of A Fall and Jonathan Glazer’s innovative holocaust drama The Zone Of Interest lead the international charge today. The former is a French-language French production, while the latter is a German-language international co-production (with some key U.S. backing).
The two features, which both debuted at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, nabbed five Oscar noms each this morning, including showings in Best Director and their respective screenplay categories: adapted for Glazer and original for Triet and her co-writer Arthur Harari.
The two films also appeared in Best Picture. When you factor in fellow Best Picture contender Past Lives, which is in English and Korean,...

Thanks to “Oppenheimer,” Universal Pictures is one of the two studios tied for the most nominations at the 2024 Academy Awards in the top categories with a lucky 13 citations, all for the Christopher Nolan film. Searchlight Pictures also scored 13, earning a whopping 11 for Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” one for “Flamin’ Hot” for Oscar-favorite songwriter Diane Warren and one for Documentary Short Film for “The Last Repair Shop.” See a list of nominations by studio in the top categories below.
Other studios that broke double digits include Netflix and Apple Original Films. Netflix’s tally includes nominations for “Maestro” with seven, “Nyad” with two, and one each for “American Symphony,” “El Conde,” “May December,” “Nimona,” “Rustin,” and “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.” Note that these figures do not include all the contenders for the three short film categories. Apple Original Films earned all 10 of its nominations for Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon.
