This first edition for the long-running series certainly delivers the goods for the fans of Lesbian Cinema, though I found its la-dee-dah approach (tongue firmly inserted in the anonymous filmmaker's cheek) and over-the-top tease a bit much. Having seen more recent editions, the format has settled down to pure entertainment after this launch.
Gimmick, perpetuated with straight-face proselytizing and "website" listing on the back of each DVD box, is that moms and daughters use the title website to basically pimp out each other for sexual gratification. I don't know who thought up this wild concept, but I'm sure it was meant to annoy any creepy Moral Majority types out there, even though few (or none) patronize lesbian pornography.
Opening segment invokes the Meryl Streep of lesbian cinema, Magdalene St. Michaels, delightfully paired with Marie McCray as her daughter near the beginning of latter's magnificent career. These powerhouses are played off less familiar thesps: huge-bust plain-Jane mom Cindy (sort of representing the "realist" wing of Girlfriends Films early days) and her daughter Natasha Lenin (cute stage name, but listed as one-shot actress in IMDb).
Cindy has a field day humping McCray, with latter eventually warming up to the scene and stepping a bit out of character (as usual in these videos) with her professionalism at cunnilingus and fingering.
With the daughter-trade, Magdalene is reluctant to indulge, she being heterosexual here and it takes quite a bit of cajoling for Natasha and her to hook up in the sack. Again, once things get started there's no amateur night action for the fans, but straight-ahead XXX performances. Maggie sums up the general philosophy expressed in these videos when she tells the girl: "If it feels good and makes you happy, it can't be wrong".
Second half of the 3-hour-plus feature is an interesting and frustrating bait & switch exercise. Lynn LeMay plays a sexually aggressive mom, and twice we are poised to see her in action, but each time the sex is avoided. Gimmick is that you'll have to tune in to Volume 2 of the series to see Lynn get down. I had previously seen Lynn as middle-aged actress in a horrible European gonzo video about perverted nuns (titled NOVICES) and was anxious to see her in mature action in something good, so this was quite disappointing.
Though Lynn is left out in the cold, her daughter Alyssa Hall does get to have sex with the other mom, played by Autum Moon, another plain-Janer. Moon's kid Kaci Starr is reluctant to have sex, and is held over till Volume 2 for a hopefully more productive meet up with Lynn.
Finale is quite odd: Magdalene visits another mom Dia Zerva to indoctrinate her in how the Exchange Club works. Ultimately Zerva opts not to join in the club action and instead has sex with her own step-daughter Hayden Night. Unfortunately, the tight closeups of Hayden's groin reveal it covered with blemishes and she should have had industrial strength body makeup applied. Instead of a sexy finish, this is a turn-off. Nonetheless I see that Night has returned to the screen many, many times in future Girlfriends segments.
