Flawed but very enjoyable
jdxcrow-490354 November 2023
I came to this movie with no expectations. I knew I'd seen Melanie Laurent before, but couldn't remember where from. I didn't watch the trailer, all I had was the two sentence description on Netflix. Going in cold, I have to say, I really enjoyed this.

Movies depend on forgiveness. Plots are never perfect; there is always something that the audience has to agree to ignore. Characters, accents, real life details... the audience has to put those aside to enjoy the movie. In some ways, movies have an "enjoyment ATM card". If it stars your favourite actor, your card starts with a positive balance. Favourite director, same thing. Hopefully, we click "play" with some degree of goodwill built into the process, giving a starting positive balance of some amount.

Then the movie starts, and as you are watching, things either increase the balance on your card, or decreases it. Hopefully, you finish the film with a positive balance. But the slips in the movie will eat away at your balance to the point that, if there are too many of them, you finish the movie with negative enjoyment. Sometimes, a movie is so bad that you exceed your credit limit before it ends, and you stop watching. (I'm looking at you, Michael Bay.)

In this case, the storyline is a little bit lightweight, and they make a few wrong turns in telling the story. These mishaps will leave a definite negative entry on your enjoyment balance sheet. Depending on how much you have enjoyed the movie to that point, you may end up with a negative balance.

For me, there were enough positives in the movie that, when the plot holes showed up, I had enough on my card to forgive them for their screenwriting sins and keep the balance in black.

Among the positives, the acting was superb, and in particular the actress playing Alex was a real delight. Isabelle Adjani makes an impact in a small role, and if you don't know her age, you might be shocked to find out what it actually is.

Visually, it's a beautiful film to watch. The locations are spectacular, and the action scenes are very well choreographed. Throughout the film there is a frequent change of the colour palette as it moves from sequence to sequence, much in the way that Kill Bill vol. 1 did in a more exaggerated manner. The movement from a beige base to the blue of the ocean, back to beige, to the green of the forest, to the coldness of the forest at night, back to beige, then to the red in a private screening room.... It's another way that the movie continues to engage with the viewer and contribute positively to the experience.

There is a wonderful action sequence involving Alex that really has no business being in the movie from a storytelling perspective. But it was done so creatively that, for me, it added to the enjoyment rather than detracted from it. Later on, there's another sequence which begins with the majestic line (en anglais) "We're taking a ferry to Italy tonight. We're going to get revenge for my bunny." Again, from a storytelling perspective it could have been shorter. Given its place in the timing of the movie - at the 70% mark - one might hope that they would speed things up a bit to get to the end. But the scene is executed (ha ha) so beautifully that again, it's a positive not a negative for me. However, they did go to the style well a few too many times. There is a sequence in the last act where Caroline unexpectedly has a conversation with someone while she's doing something. It's cute, but that is one of several cuts that probably should have been made to the film. It takes far too much at that point of the movie that the overall pacing is hurt.

Lawyers have a saying: "When the facts are against you, argue the law. When the law is against you, argue the facts. When both are against you, just argue." That is kind of what we have here. Melanie Laurent had a script that was against her. What she did was to concentrate as much as she could on what we see on the screen to make it a positive experience. I think she succeeded, and I hope she gets the opportunity to direct many more movies for years to come. But with better scripts.

Fun premise but the female friendship shines
bartbloo3 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I went into this film with low expectations, expecting another generic action movie with no substance.

What I got instead was a visually really lovely film with some beautiful sceneries, badass women, fun banter and, most importantly, a beautiful depiction of female friendship. That, I believe, is what the film is truly about. The friendship between Carole and Alex is based on unconditional love and support, the kind of connection that can only be described as platonic soulmates. Carole's level-headedness balances out Alex's impulsivity. Their absolute faith and trust in each other, whether it's about a mission and blindly believing in the other's skills, or in their personal life, it is moving to witness.

I think Sam was a nice addition to the movie, her presence further strengthening the found-family trope. She has experienced immense loss as well, leaving her lonely and grieving. So, Alex and Carole's grand entrance into her life was met with a wariness that quickly turned into a trust and connection that, albeit not as deep as Alex and Carole's, we know that with time could turn just as deep. She finds a beautiful friendship with them, and together they embark on their new journey towards healing.

I understand why some viewers might think this to be "homoerotic" but, having such friendships myself, I was deeply moved and comforted to see such a loving, healthy and supportive friendship (I think it's worthy to note that the film was directed by a woman, who clearly has experienced having a (or multiple) platonic soulmate(s)). So, while it doesn't go too crazy in the action or too into detail about the master plans, I think it's still a fun and unexpectedly emotional watch.

NOT an action movie, NOT a laugh out loud comedy, although it wants to be both
imseeg4 November 2023
Several terrific female empowered action movies have been made lately, but this is not one of them. Bummer.

The bad: comedy is personal, but I didnt laugh once and this is supposed to be a comedy. The supposedly witty dialogues were run of the mill and became kinda annoying after a while because the two leading actresses constantly chatter with each other about trivial things, which supposedly is meant to be funny, but became a tedious gimmick... sigh...

More bad: IF only the action part would have been okay, then I wouldnt have minded that the jokes werent anything special. But even the very few action scenes are totally bland and unimpressive.

They dressed up a chick flick as an action/comedy, but what a failure it is.

Too bad, because these actresses are really wonderful performers whom I like to watch in many other French movies, but they couldnt save this movie from turning out to be quite bland and uneventful and tedious. I fault the direction and the writing.

Carole and Alex are a pair of thieves. They decide that it is time to retire but their employer, 'The Godmother' has other ideas and pressures them into taking 'one last job'. They are to steal a painting from and exhibition on Corsica. Before they can do the job they must recruit a driver, Sam. Sam will also need to be taught how to shoot before they are ready to do the job. Inevitably there will be complications.

If you go into this expecting full on action you are likely to be disappointed. However if you are happy with some action, some laughs and what is essentially a female buddy movie there is a lot to enjoy. The opening set piece sets the tone nicely with exciting action and some humour. We then get some solid character development as Carole and Alex team up with Sam and meet other associates. Finally we get the heist and a conclusion with a twist. The action is nicely varies with Carole and Alex fleeing armed drones on a quad-bike; Alex and Sam racing through narrow streets and paths on a motorbike; plenty of shooting and even Alex in hand to hand combat with a naked assassin! The film isn't particularly violent; a fair number of bad guys get shot but our protagonists prefer to use tranquiliser darts against non-criminals. This action takes place in an interesting variety of setting; mostly on Corsica. The cast does a good job; most obviously Mélanie Laurent as Carole; Adèle Exarchopoulos as Alex and Manon Bresch as Sam. Mélanie Lauren also did an impressive job as the film's director. Overall a fun film for those looking for a crime drama that doesn't take itself too seriously.

These comments are based on watching the film in French with English subtitles.

A bit disappointing
carlo-131-6260332 November 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Somewhat fast paced story revolving around the homoerotic relationship of two thief women hired by an inexpressive Adjani playing a barely credible boss. A lot of stunts and action that add little to the story.

A third woman (Sam) is added to help, as a driving specialist, with a final heist that should be the last job the protagonist will do (but will it?). Yer the story and the heist do not call for a motorized fast escape, so why an extra thief for nothing?

The final plot twist after a mass shooting that kills all the bad guys is totally unwarranted, preposterous and totally unexplained.

Nothing special, a mildly enjoyable flimsy story with little inspiration. Meh.

Netflix pushes Mélanie Laurent into mediocrity~ [+44%]
arungeorge133 November 2023
As a filmmaker, Mélanie Laurent has made some fine dramas throughout the 2010s. Her foray into Netflix's doomed action-comedy genre yields mixed results. While it portrays the "female friendship" aspect in a way that puts the recent Charlie's Angels film to shame, it struggles to build tension within the set-pieces and concludes in a super-dodgy way. The star performer here undoubtedly is Adèle Exarchopoulos who fully embraces the role of Alex - a sniper with a vulnerable side. Her equation with Caroline (Laurent) is wonderful to watch, and the ladies sure seem to be having fun. Oh, there are bloopers during the closing credits!

The plot just goes through the motions, and the laughs are occasional. Even the addition of a third member (Manon Bresch) doesn't really elevate the stakes. The main antagonist - Godmother, played by Isabelle Adjani - and her relationship with Caroline is only elucidated over a few lines, making it difficult to connect with her "reasons". Of course, then there's Netflixisation of everything - the action comes to sudden halts, some sections deliberately look like song montages, and the story never really comes full circle. That ending is such a cop-out, and that made me reduce ½ a star.

Loyalty isn't just for men
chiaramariecapritta4 November 2023
It's not an action movie, actually, it has very little to do with action, it's a funny and enjoyable movie about love and friendship.

There are flaws and holes in the plot in my opinion and some parts could have been written better, it seems to me that the movie is a little bit static throughout all of its duration, there are not major plot twists, I don't know... I didn't mind it but it didn't convinced me 100% neither, it's not bad, but it's also not good, it's enjoyable and the actresses are really good in their roles, mostly watched for them, they really did an amazing job.

I know that the robbery was not the main subject in the movie but I wouldn't have mind it if they put some more action during that scenes Still, it's worth watching.

My disappointment was, immeasurable
mildlyintrusive6 November 2023
Oh my, I think I've never seen a movie so uneventful, so jejune that I kept on looking at my watch. This French "action-comedy" released on Netflix caught my attention as it was advertised as a French action-thriller, instead of what I got is a tedious "comedy" with no stakes and nothing noteworthy. This film's "plot" essentially follows two thieves out for one last mission.

I will say though that the cinematography is beautiful, with great shots emphasizing the beauty of Europe, that's it. My biggest problem is that nothing feels at stake here, theres no real problem that needs to be solved, characters just hang around for half of the runtime and decide what to do and when and plot points are brought up without any previous build-up to it. The movie didn't make me care enough about the characters, the actors weren't bad or anything but god I cant stand how annoying they were in here! So much of the runtime is spent on them chatting trivial nonsense which is supposed to be funny? The action scenes themselves are too bland and lack any real tension making for a reasonably dull experience with the climax at the apartment being the only one worth mentioning but even that is undermined by one of the worst endings I've ever seen.

Overall a very dull and monotonous movie which is a shame cause the lead actors are wonderful in other movies but are undermined with tedious direction and a script written by high-school teenagers. Skip this one and go outside have whatever.

Adorable to watch
uniquehija20 January 2024
Aside from the picturesque landscapes and great choices of film/background score, all in all this is a fun movie to watch with not much violence and gore. Boosting with female power, charisma, humor, loyalty and friendship, the bond and chemistry between Alex and Caroule were greatly portrayed that I wish I can be the Sam in their lives. The script and witty comeback exchanges between the characters were also funny and relatable. Watching this will make you want to have what they have. Though there were some plotholes, the movie did not veer off from it's story. And yes, I did shed a tear at the ending.

A very disappointing film
carmo-629315 November 2023
Wingwomen (Vouleuses 2023) is a film that goes on and on being silly since its beginning up to its end, which happens after almost 2 hours of wasted time. The four main characters, played by Mélanie Laurent (who is also the director of the film), Adèle Exarchopoulos, Isabelle Adjani and Manon Bresch cannot do much to improve the quality of the story, in spite of being talented actresses with a history of many good performances. IMDb characterizes the film as comedy+action+crime which is quite surprising because, in spite of having lots of actions and crimes, the comedy ingredient in the film is close to nothing.

The film has interesting scenarios which, unfortunately, do not contribute to improve its weak and silly plot.

A good french action comedy
LetsReviewThat263 November 2023
Carole and Alex are expert thieves. I'll start by saying their portraying was lightheartd and acted well. There have not been a great lot of Netflix action films that have been great. But this was one of the better ones. They need a getaway driver so enlist the help of racecar driver sam. She has a real apart and I also thought she was acted well. The dynamite seemed to work between the three of them. The movie flowed well between the action and there were comedy elements aswell. I do think however the script could be better. It's the one thing that always puts thes films down. Overall though I found this to be good and was enjoyable which is the main thing.

Much below what it aims to be
satin-4825010 November 2023
As written in another comment, Netflix has a bad influence on Mélanie Laurent who can do much better.

This plain vanilla action movie has a few good scenes (and also some cringeworthy ones).

The two main actresses have a good chemistry but their acting is soulless and subpar. Manon Bresch and Félix Moati are better than them here imo.

The scenery is often breathtaking.

And that's about it.

The rhythm is bad, there's no tension, the plot and its twists have been seen hundreds of times. It's even boring at times.

A mediocre film, not completely bad and made only to bring food on the table. Disappointing.

Wingwomen
henry8-33 December 2023
2 women, played by Adèle Exarchopoulos and Mélanie Laurent have been great friends and professional big item thieves for years. One becomes pregnant and indeed both decide that they want an ordinary life much to the fury of their cold blooded boss, played by Isabelle Adjani. They agree to take on one more big heist, involving the recruitment of a third, new colleague, Manon Bresch but inevitably not all goes to plan.

Whilst there are a number of fast and furious action sequences laced with often enjoyable dark humour and indeed a flavour of Charley's Angels here, there is much more to this. The great focus here is on the powerful friendship between the 2 principal characters who, whilst often rowing and take the mick, clearly adore each other which adds so much to what could otherwise have been another plain tough girl action movie. It is rarely predictable and sharp throughout with a number of good ideas and marred only slightly by an ending the makers thought they could get away with, but haven't.

7 is a much more accurate rating
jasongardner-9779218 December 2023
This film deserves much more than the current rating, I've seen some pretty poor films over my time around a 5 rating on here and they have been absolutely awful.

Whilst this won't win any awards it will keep you entertained for a couple hours, assuming that is, you don't watch it dubbed. Films should be watched in their native language to get a true grip of the actors and characters, when you flip from English dub to French it's already worth 2 extra stars, which is why I guess some of the other reviews are low.

This film is interesting in terms of the plot, not a typical action film but plenty of action in it. It's more the storytelling round the characters that makes it much more of an all round watch.

I thought all roles were played well and there is no awkward acting throughout, which you'd expect from a mid table movie.

I couldn't see the tension or freshness that the main plot of the story was supposed to bring.
noshouse5 November 2023
This movie completely lacks tension and action. Mélanie Laurent and Adèle Exarchopoulos play characters that should be pros, but their skills aren't apparent in the film. Instead, they spend a lot of time arguing with each other, and the action scenes are pretty one-sided. Whether it's the glass house confrontation or the female lead's teamwork to overpower the enemy, these sequences lack the suspense and thrilling firepower one might expect. It's a simple mission, and after watching the whole movie, I didn't feel much. In the end for recommend this movie, I'd only recommend giving it a try on a streaming platform."

Mostly well made and enjoyable, but it struggles with flaws that drag down the fun
I_Ailurophile11 December 2023
I have great trust in Mélanie Laurent as a filmmaker; to date there's been only one of her directed features that left me less than impressed, and the others have been plainly superb. Her skills as an actor are never in doubt, and for Isabelle Adjani and Adèle Exarchopoulos to appear alongside her is all the impetus I need to check something out. I claim no familiarity with the graphic novel on which this is based - and truthfully, when it comes to the quality of their "original" films or series, I don't think Netflix is remotely reliable - but still, I've all the reason I need to give 'Voleuses' a try. With all this in mind, I mean no disrespect to anyone involved when I say that it doesn't take long before the nature of this flick reveals itself, and while it most assuredly well done in most every capacity, there are upper limits on its entertainment and lasting value. I like this, but it doesn't necessarily meet the same high standard of Laurent's other works as a director. And I don't think it's her fault.

We've seen this movie before. It's an action-comedy including a pair of consummate professionals, a rookie who is being trained, and a boss who is more than a little prickly and duplicitous. Dynamics will change, trust will be challenged, plans will go awry, and we'll get some fine stunts, effects, and action sequences, and some swell touches of comedy, as thieves pull heists and have a good time along the way. For good measure toss in some queer representation and sexual liberation among the characters (but do be sure that it's discreet and tasteful, lest anyone get the idea that the full spectrum and passion of the LGBTQ community is or should be generally accepted). This is also an action-comedy that, like other pictures of its ilk that prominently center female characters, suffers from the issue of softening the proceedings - ensuring that they're light and fun, and that the violence and gravity is reduced compared to what we'd see if the same picture instead centered male characters. (A prime example: an early scene in which Laurent and Exarchopoulos' characters drunkenly lip-sync and dance to a popular song.) Compare this to the overall tenor of, say, 'The 355,' or 'Les femmes de l'ombre.'

Make no mistake, this really is well made and enjoyable. Those stunts, effects, and action sequences are a blast; the acting is never in doubt. The filming locations are splendid, and the sets; the costume design, hair, and makeup are lovely. Laurent's direction is excellent, not to mention the cinematography and editing. However, more than it already had in a couple select instances previously, 'Voleuses' also experiences a radical shift in tone in the climactic sequence (and through to the end), in one fell swoop laying on all the impact, weight, and sobriety with which it could and should have been carrying itself all along. With all the suddenness of a rabbit doing a binky the viewing experience goes from pleasant and frivolous to dark, dramatic, and heavy. Moreover, between the dominant ethos of Slick And Cool, the untouchable professionalism of the characters, and the broad overproduced nature of the project, the storytelling and action are robbed of a preponderance of the substance that the writing didn't already remove from the equation. Like a superhero who is perfectly strong, perfectly invincible, and perfectly moral (you know - Superman), action scenes with no bumps in the road are kind of dull. I do like the plot, but there are relatively few moments when the writing seems to be firing on all cylinders (informing Laurent's direction in turn), contrasted with those moments when some critical component is weak or lacking. Illustrating the point, I appreciate the ending (however unexceptional even on paper), but the addition of one particular song at this juncture comes off as tawdry overkill overkill and kitschy embellishment.

I like 'Voleuses.' I want to like it more than I do. I don't know if the tack the title adopts can be chalked up to the source material, the adapted screenplay, or the invisible guiding hand of the producers, but one way or another the sum total feels a smidgen unfocused, less than entirely absorbing, and ultimately a bit unconvincing. It's a credit to all those who contributed in any capacity, yet it simply does not completely meet its potential, and maybe it should be deemphasized on everyone's respective resumes. If the narrative were tighter, if the violence was more severe, if the mirthful indulgences were slightly reined in, and if the tone were more consistent, there's no doubt in my mind that the flick would have met with greater success. These problems were not insurmountable, and it's just unfortunate that instead of the rip-roaring, highly engaging romp that the feature could have been, it ended up being rather middle-of-the-road and conventional. I'm glad for those who get more out of it than I do, and by all means, I continue to look forward to all that Laurent, Exarchopoulos, Adjani, and all others involved will do in the future. I can't help but be a tad disappointed with 'Voleuses,' though; best recommended for those who are huge fans of the participants, save this as something uninvolved and uncomplicated for a lazy day.

The Strength is the Stars
tkdlifemagazine10 November 2023
Melanie Laurent was so wonderful, compelling, and enticing in Inglorious Basterds that she will always have a place in my heart. She is good in this one but definitely not at that level. Adele Exarchopolous is always sexy and smart and funny. She is good in this. This is a decent spy and action film adopt some female thieves and spies that are looking to get out, but can not. The fill is, basically, a female buddy film, discussed as an action adventure film. That is done well. The cast is likable and the move has some good scenes. The biggest problem is that the storyline is a little weak. There are familiar elements of other major films but not really tied together well enough to be an "A" film. Best in French with subtitles.

The perfect example of bad script writing.
deloudelouvain13 February 2024
Mélanie Laurent has been in some good movies but also in some real stinkers. This time she's writer/director/actress and maybe this is too much food on her plate. I thought she was quite annoying and not very believable in her acting. Adèle Exarchopoulos was clearly better as an actress. This movie wants to be funny which it isn't, absolutely not. The cinematography was okay with good clear images, nice scenery and good camerawork. But that isn't a guarantee for a good movie. For that you need a good story and this was certainly not the case. The writing is awful, with dumb dialogues and a plot that could have been written by a five year old with learning disabilities. The ending is too dumb for words. Avoid at all costs.

Outstanding Movie!
jsinisi6 November 2023
I was expecting this to be shallow and dumb but I must say the French are doing way better than Hollywood. My son and I watched this movie and it held our attention for the entire movie, it was really well done. The main characters held your interest, and the plot and dialogue kept me awake and involved. The synergy between the cast was excellent. The ending was a bit contrived but we even like it as it was written. I must say these ladies did a great job and I highly recommend this movie. The cast really made this movie real for the viewer. I would most certainly watch any movie with this outstanding cast and if it was created and directed by the same people. Most movies today are shallow, unimaginative and boring but this movie was totally worth watching. I must say that I'm VERY impressed with what the French are doing. GREAT MOVIE!

Lame and uninteresting movie...
MovieKitty1120 December 2023
Warning: Spoilers
While I enjoyed a few dark humors, this is not a great movie. It looked like a school cinema project low budget film. It's really lame and the entire movie looked like a production for one of those TV movies from 60s or 70s, except the picture quality is recent. Considering this is French movie, you may think the fashion could be on point but no, the fashion is very lame; I saw Gucci Adidas jersey suits (omg so horrible...some Euro trashy fashion there) and the storyline is quite uninteresting and flat. I also didn't like the ending where the main character blonde woman who wanted to retire supposedly died shot by one of the swat team that arrived on the last scene but 4 years later, she is miraculously alive and they don't even tell you how. Very unsatisfying movie. I am a woman and do I feel empowered by the movie (because they are trying so hard to be "all about women"? No, too lame and too uninteresting to be even bothered to relate to the movie. Why don't they just keep it private screening as it is not worthy of international audience? Netflix is so lame. Also it is a dubbed movie and I don't even understand the French lyrics when they were singing or when there were songs in a few scenes. They could have put subtitles on that (they don't know how to do subtitle either). How can I enjoy a song when I don't understand the meaning of the song? All in all, very lame badly done college school project at best, not worth of our time for the public. I would pass, not to waste 2 hours I could have spent for something more valuable things to do. I think a few of these 9/10 reviews I am seeing are delusional actually. Any sane person who has seen great movies would rate 1 or 2. Not recommended.

Could had been a better movie
utkarshc-5798520 November 2023
Movie was good. The cast did put their full effort.

One cannot do once the script is full of loopholes Lot of questions remained unanswered. Like who were the rabbit killers and who was the guy who came to kill Alex or how was Carol saved.

Interesting movie, but the whole movie, I kept searching for some serious plot but nothing happened.

Friendship is shown to the fullest. I have seen Melanie before in Hollywood movies and that was the reason, I saw this movie.

The move keeps you hooked on in a belief something will happen, but in the end nothing happens.

So yes a good movie but you leave in the end wondering what was the idea of the movie.

What a stinko movie
therealhman12 February 2024
Awful with the stupidest ending I've ever seen. Who writes this crap. Laurent directed it and it shows. Pointless dialog, pointless storyline. Apparently if you're an actress over 35 you can go from invisible to directing, if you can find someone stupid enough to back your directing career, ie. Netflix.

Just goes to show even quality actresses like Adele E. Won't turn down the easy money. So disappointing.

Adele, however, was the only bright spot. But ever her talent could'nt put lipstick on this turd. She was in a fight scene that had good action but the lead up to the fight was as silly as the rest of the movie.

Wow. This movie is so bad it's hard to adequately describe how bad.

I'd like to meet the chumps who backed this movie. Maybe they are interested in buying a bridge.

Stopped after 10 mins

Was excited to see Melanie Laurent. Was super disappointed after the film started. Couldn't pass the 10 mins mark.

It was boring Felt very unrealistic It was not funny at all I can't even remember what it was about, just remember her running away in a quad bike but i came back to post this review because I think it is not good at all for producers and directors to bring great actresses and actors, like Melanie Laurent in this case, to such a mediocrity of a film. This can impact their careers and the perception of people. Why making this kind of film? Isn't it better to spend more in writers and prepare something better ?

Great action scenes with witty humour

Given the low rating of this movie, I did not expect much, But considering it's on Netflix I thought I'd give it a shot and about two minutes in I knew this was going to be a great movie. The dialogues are incredibly witty, the scenes are funny, the action is top notch. The plot is a bit contrived sure but the rest is absolutely enjoyable to watch. So I really don't understand the bad ratings it received, possibly because some right wing nut job, didn't like the fact that it's an all female cast and they're kicking ass. Somehow they might feel threatened in their masculinity, but this is not some action movie that's trying to be woke or diverse, it's just genuinely funny and incredibly well shot.
