I don't think the show's had a shock ending like this one since 'Code 4', early last season. Not to really spoil anything, but this episode closes on a painfully unbroken shot of a major character being overpowered by a perp and bleeding out in the street. It's unbelievably hard to watch and then just cuts to credits. that's it. Now dislodge your fingernails from the couch arm.
'Integrity Check' is "Southland" rigging on its own documentary- style trope - by putting an actual camera crew in the backseat as characters. Naturally, the calls that Cooper and Tang respond to are crazier than usual. But integrity check is an actual LAPD practice, designed to monitor its officers for strict compliance. Talk about paranoia.
There's plenty of material between Lydia and Sherman & Bryant, but there's no shaking off that horrific final shot.
9/10
