The kiss
jotix10014 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
A kiss in certain cultures is expected. In America though, a kiss might not mean exactly what in other countries might be taken for. The fact remains that a kiss on the lips between strangers is seen as inappropriate.

That is exactly what happens to Claire when Phil invites Tad, a prospective wealthy client to his home. Not knowing what to prepare for the sophisticated man, he prepares a portion of salmon, steak, chicken and shrimp. Tad liked it all! As Tad is ready to leave, he shakes hands with Phil, but turns around and kisses Claire on her lips. She is stunned, to say the least. Jay, who is hoping to do business with Tad does not see anything out of the ordinary, reasoning that perhaps it might be the custom in Costa Rica, maybe.

Jay and Gloria are playing hosts to Mitchell and Cameron. Mitchell welcomes the occasion for being with Gloria. Cam, on the other hand, decides to put some sense in Gloria's household. He brings an amaryllis to brighten the kitchen and then changes things around it so it would make sense, but Gloria does not appreciate.

When Tad asks Phil and Claire for dinner, she is not looking forward being kissed again. To her surprise, she watches Tad kiss the older babysitter, as well as his sister, daughter and son. Claire is unnerved by it. As Claire realizes Tad is that way with everyone, she begins to relax. Phil, on the other hand is not too comfortable. Claire thinks he is being jealous.

Ben Karlin wrote the episode. Michael Spiller directed with his usual panache, giving the chapter fun as well as the right pace. Greg Kinnear is the guest star. His Tad is dead serious about how he feels about the people, and animals he likes.

Amazing choreography of ideas & humor

I have been a Modern Family fan since day one, but this episode really struck home for me in the way that we misjudge people even though we have the best intentions. The orchestration of the jokes was seamless and the overall sentiment was super sweet. After the moral equivalence is established between the behavior of Gloria and Manny's friend, the make up scene in the kitchen tango between Cameron and Gloria is amazing -- you don't need to have worked in a professional kitchen to appreciate what the writer was trying to accomplish -- sometimes in life we run on all cylinders and our fully charged hybrid battery. The dressing up of Luke was adorable. More of this please! Phil's last line to Claire, saying she could fake anything but "You can't fake your laugh!" was super sweet.
