- The nine remaining teams travel from Jaipur, India to Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Finding transport to get them through Dubai's stunning deserts from A to B may prove to be the biggest challenge of all at the Detour. A wrong turn leads to one team finding themselves in serious trouble when they are arrested. Will they be the team that fails to make it to the Pit Stop?—Allister Coots
- Flatmates Sticky & Sam are the first team to depart from Nahargarh Fort at 1:37pm. They open up their clue and find out that they must travel back to Delhi and fly to the desert metropolis of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the home of some of the world's tallest skyscrapers. Once there, teams must search the airport car park for some marked Honda cars which contain their next clue. However, before they leave the fort, teams are required to play their hand at an Australian first in the form of a Must Vote U-Turn. The team who receives the most votes from other teams will be forced to complete both sides of the Detour later in the leg. The teams will receive A$60 for this leg of the race. Sticky & Sam don't take long to cast their vote for workmates Paul & Steve, who the flatmates see as a strong team that they just don't like. Father and daughter Ross & Tarryn are next to depart at 1:39am, and they also see Paul & Steve as being in the gun and vote for them at the U-Turn. With their sights set on making it to the final three, they take a rickshaw to the same travel agent where Sticky & Sam purchase their tickets for the flight from Delhi to Dubai, and ask for tickets for the same flight. Now that the flatmates, who always thought they would be a strong team, have won two of the three legs, they realise that other teams will know that Sticky's amputated arm isn't going to affect them.
Cheerleading twins Michelle & Jo are the third team to depart at 1:44pm, followed at 2:10pm by engaged couple Kym & Donna. The cheerleaders have impressed even themselves by how well they have done in the first three legs. Both teams vote for Paul & Steve at the U-Turn, considering it a strategic vote, though Kym & Donna also vote for the workmates out of spite, feeling happy about their choice. Paul & Steve are next to depart at 2:12pm and vote for Sticky & Sam, while police officers Shane & Andrew cast their vote for Paul & Steve after they depart at 2:15pm. Paul & Steve decide to bring a businessman attitude into the fourth leg because they believe that nice people will finish last. Shane & Andrew get to see Paul in action when the workmates settle their account with their auto-rickshaw driver, refusing to budge from their agreed price of 370 rupees. In contrast, Kym has to give his driver 1,000 rupees, leading Donna to think that they had just been screwed.
Brother and sister Joseph & Grace and dating couple James & Sarah are the next teams to start the leg, both departing at 2:17pm. Joseph & Grace vote for Paul & Steve at the U-Turn, with the selfish and hard way that Paul plays the game being the reason for their vote. James & Sarah cast a strategic vote for sisters Lucy & Emilia, who are the only team behind them. After the sisters depart at 2:42pm, they choose to vote for Shane & Andrew at the U-Turn even though they hate having to do so, seeing the police officers as a strong team who should take their vote as a compliment. They go into the leg with their only strategy being to have fun, and they pass by an open-air urinal on their way to the station to catch a train to Delhi. All nine teams make the same train, with Sarah noting that every man and his dog is on it as well. When the train arrives at New Delhi, there's another mad scramble for taxis to the airport. At the airport, Kym & Donna, Shane & Andrew, James & Sarah, Michelle & Jo, Sticky & Sam and Joseph & Grace make the first Emirates flight from Delhi to Dubai, which is scheduled to arrive at 6:10am. Paul & Steve find an Air India flight to Mumbai from where they can transfer to a flight to Dubai. Steve shares this information with Ross & Tarryn and Lucy & Emilia, to Paul's disgust, with these three teams making this second flight.
The first flight lands on schedule at 6:10am and the six teams on it race toward the airport car park. Joseph & Grace are first to find the marked cars and open up the clue to reveal a Detour. They must now drive themselves 90 kilometres into the Al Faqa Desert, where they have to choose between Dubai's two most popular forms of desert transport in Dune Bash or Camel Dash. Teams choosing Camel Dash must ride a camel around a short course and collect four coloured flags. When they have returned to the start, they can exchange the flags for their next clue. Teams choosing Dune Bash must drive a dune buggy around a 10 kilometre desert course. If teams drive the buggy too fast, they could find themselves in trouble, but if they drive too slow, they could find themselves bogged in the middle of nowhere. When they reach the course's finish line, they will receive their next clue. The brother and sister choose Dune Bash, and Joseph then gets a funny feeling with the steering wheel being on the left-hand side of the car, which he has to adjust to. James & Sarah, Michelle & Jo and Kym & Donna are the next three teams to find the cars. The dating and engaged couples both choose Dune Bash, while the twins opt for Camel Dash. As some of the lead teams search for the Al Faqa Desert, Sticky & Sam and Shane & Andrew are the last teams from the first flight to find the marked cars and the Detour, with the flatmates choosing Dune Bash and the police officers deciding to give Camel Dash a go.
Grace uses her knowledge of Arabic to ask for directions to the desert, while Kym & Donna have to go around a roundabout again after they miss their turn. Sticky & Sam go around in circles while Joseph & Grace see a sign pointing toward Al Faqa and follow it into the desert, which Grace observes is like the Dubai that she wanted to experience. They arrive at the Detour point first, and Grace decides to let Joseph drive. They set off on the desert course and briefly become airborne after hitting a dune. Michelle & Jo are first to arrive at the camels and get some guidance from locals about how to drive them. Their experience proves to be up-and-down, and they eventually decide that they are wasting too much time and switch tasks. As Joseph & Grace climb one dune on the course, they become bogged and blame each other, with Grace suggesting that Joseph was in charge of the buggy, while Joseph claimed that Grace's thighs hit the gearstick and put it into neutral. Joseph starts digging around the buggy in the hope of getting some traction, a term unfamiliar to Grace, who decides that it is too hot and takes it easy in the dunes, making a "sand angel" and leaving all the digging to Joseph.
Kym & Donna bring out their inner petrol heads when they are next to start the dune buggy course, followed by Michelle & Jo, who have trouble with their buggy from the start, with Michelle having to wrestle the steering wheel just to hold it straight. Climbing up one of the dunes, they go too far to the right and get bogged. Joseph & Grace haven't seen any other teams by the time a recovery vehicle arrives to pull their buggy out. As they prepare to re-start, Grace tells Joseph not to show off because there are no hot girls around, not counting herself because she's Joseph's sister, and Joseph responds by telling Grace to keep her thighs away from the gearstick. While they continue on the course, Shane & Andrew find a taxi driver who can lead them to the Al Faqa Desert. As they follow, they ask how fast he's going, considering the possibility that the police officers may get a ticket. Sticky & Sam find a marked arrow leading to the Detour point as Joseph & Grace complete the dune buggy course, followed by Kym & Donna. They open up their next clue and learn that they have to drive themselves back to Dubai and find the Wild Wadi Water Park, where they must surf their way to the front of a wave machine in order to grab their next clue. The teams also have to check the U-Turn board to find out which team has received the most votes and must successfully complete the other Detour task before they can proceed to the water park. Joseph & Grace and Kym & Donna find the board and see that Paul & Steve have been U-Turned, having received votes from six teams, whose smaller pictures are shown on the side of the board. No other team received more than one vote.
Shane & Andrew arrive at the camels and are given some directions on steering them by the locals, but controlling the camel proves to be harder than it seems for them. Sticky & Sam start the dune buggy course and pass Michelle & Jo, who are still trying to dig themselves out after getting bogged. The cheerleaders ask the flatmates if they can help them, but Sticky wishes them good luck and they keep driving. Further along the course, they start to relax, but they take a corner too narrow and get bogged themselves on the top of a steep hill. James & Sarah are next onto the dune buggy course, with James driving and Sarah screaming the whole way. Meanwhile, the second flight lands in Dubai at 8:15am, and when the three teams on it arrive at the Detour, they all choose Dune Bash. Shane & Andrew are still struggling to get their camel to stand up. They decide to abort the mission and switch to the dune buggy. The recovery vehicle arrives to help pull Michelle & Jo's buggy out, and the twins learn that they need momentum to go up a hill - they cannot take it too slowly. Back on the course, they pass a bogged Sticky & Sam and see it as karma for their earlier refusal to help. They finish the course and leave for the Wild Wadi Water Park as Joseph & Grace arrive there. At first, they have trouble controlling the boogie boards, but eventually Joseph gets far enough forward on the machine to grab a clue. Grace opens it and the brother and sister learn that they must drive themselves to the Meydan Racecourse, the home of the world's richest horse race, where they must pick a winning horse in order to receive their next clue. If they fail to select a winner before the end of the meeting, then one person has to carry their teammate along the course for 200 metres, with the team receiving their next clue once they have crossed the finish line.
Kym & Donna ask for directions, but still have trouble trying to get to the Wild Wadi Water Park. As they keep driving, they hear a bang and stop the car. When they get out to look, they realise that their right front tyre is flat. Shane & Andrew start driving their buggy on the 10 kilometre course, and flog the buggy within an inch of its life, like they were on a high speed pursuit. Sticky & Sam get their buggy pulled out by the recovery vehicle and continue on the course, but further along, they get bogged again. They discuss their plans and the options - one of them said that the camels was the safer option, but didn't say that they should do it. James & Sarah are next to finish the dune buggy course. Kym & Donna change the tyre on their car - Kym had driven too close to the kerb and clipped it, which was why the tyre blew. They are already past fed up as they set off, still unsure either which way they should go, or which way they are going. Adding to their frustration is that they don't have the money to buy a map, having spent most of it in India on their rickshaw ride to the train station in Jaipur. Meanwhile, Michelle & Jo find a sign pointing to the water park, but are disturbed when they hear the sound of people screaming as they approach it, but on their first attempt at the wave machine, they grab their next clue.
Joseph & Grace arrive at the Meydan Racecourse and receive their selection sheet and form guides. Grace, having no knowledge of horse racing herself, leaves Joseph to do all the talking in the search for a winner. They select horse numbers 5 and 7 for the first race, but don't have any luck with either pick. Meanwhile, the three teams from the second flight arrive at the Detour point, and Paul & Steve are the first of them to set off on the course, followed by Ross & Tarryn. Sisters Lucy & Emilia get nervous when they realise that the buggy has a gearstick, as neither of them had a lot of experience with driving manuals. Emilia drives off slowly, and it doesn't take long before they get bogged. When Sticky & Sam get pulled out for the second time, Sticky decides that he would like to drive. They complete the course ahead of Shane & Andrew and set off for the Wild Wadi Water Park as James & Sarah and Kym & Donna arrive there. James and Kym grab the clues for their teams. Michelle & Jo put their hair extensions back on when they arrive at the Meydan Racecourse, but without fascinators, hair, makeup or heels, they feel that they are under-dressed. Joseph & Grace get some advice from the locals on what horse to back for the second race, while Michelle & Jo decide to go with any horse that has pink, and select horse 9, but neither team can pick a winner, to Grace's frustration.
Paul & Steve continue on the dune buggy course. They kick up some sand as they crest one hill, but have enough momentum to avoid getting bogged. They finish the course ahead of Ross & Tarryn, but as they leave the area, they find out that they have been U-Turned, thinking it flattering that six of the nine teams voted for them. Lucy & Emilia keep bogging their buggy as Paul & Steve find the camels, but like Michelle & Jo and Shane & Andrew before them, they have trouble getting their camel to start. After getting bogged for the umpteenth time, Lucy & Emilia find that they have sand in places they never knew they could have it. Paul & Steve's camel finally gets going and they quickly get three of the four flags before their camel decides to throw a hissy fit. Sticky & Sam and Shane & Andrew get the clue from the wave machine. James & Sarah arrive at Meydan Racecourse as Joseph & Grace and Michelle & Jo make their selections for the third race, picking horses 5 and 9 respectively, while Sarah uses a blind stab to choose horse 8, but when horse 7 wins the race, all three teams miss out. As Lucy & Emilia continue on the dune buggy course, Paul & Steve get their camel going again and collect the last flag. They set off for the Wild Wadi Water Park having lost only one place as a result of their U-Turn. Lucy & Emilia are relieved when they see the finish of the course.
Tarryn grabs a clue at the water park, but when she turns around, she sees Ross bring out his big kid personality by also having a go. He too succeeds in getting a clue. Shane & Andrew have trouble getting to Meydan Racecourse, but they see a local police officer writing out a ticket for a driver on the freeway, and ask him for directions. The officer agrees to lead the team to the racetrack. Ross & Tarryn find navigating through Dubai more difficult than any Australian city they'd been in before. Kym & Donna are also struggling, feeling close to giving up, though Kym tells Donna that they can't just pull the pin in the middle of nowhere. Sticky & Sam arrive at the racecourse and find themselves in their element, as they normally bet on horses on weekends. They choose horse 8, Rockdale, and James & Sarah and Joseph & Grace follow suit. When Shane & Andrew arrive at the track, the other teams try to distract them so that the policemen don't have a chance to select a horse, but they see through their tactics and pick horses 6 and 9, Iron Age and Royalty. At 4:55pm, the horses set off in Race 4. With 500 metres to go, Royalty gives Shane & Andrew hope when he is in front, but Rockdale takes the lead in the straight and goes on to win the race, allowing James & Sarah, Sticky & Sam and Joseph & Grace to receive their next clue, which tells them to drive themselves to the next Pit Stop, the Four Points Helipad, located in the shadows of the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa. Sticky & Sam and James & Sarah head for Sheikh Zayed Road, but Joseph & Grace can't get their car to fire up, with Joseph realising that in the race to the track, he may have left the lights on.
James & Sarah pass Sticky & Sam on the way to the Four Points helipad. Paul & Steve arrive at the Wild Wadi Water Park, where Steve's first attempt at the wave machine misses the waves completely and sends him into the gutter on the side. Paul is more successful on his attempt, grabbing a clue. Lucy is petrified when she & Emilia arrive at the water park, admitting afterwards that she and water parks don't get on. The sisters need a few attempts before Emilia surfs far enough to the front to pick up a clue. Paul & Steve, Kym & Donna, Ross & Tarryn and Lucy & Emilia are all driving around Dubai looking for the Meydan Racecourse. Ross & Tarryn look for somewhere to make a U turn to go the other way along a freeway, while Steve thinks about stopping somewhere to see if a taxi driver can lead them, but Paul reminds him that the clue's direction was to drive themselves. Lucy & Emilia haven't ruled themselves out in spite of being last out the water park, hoping that another team has made a wrong turn somewhere.
Joseph & Grace find a local security patrol who are able to provide the leads to help them jump-start their car. As they set off for the Pit Stop, the gates open for Race 5 with two teams still trying to pick a winning horse. When horse number 2, Canwinn, proves that it can do just that, Michelle & Jo scream with excitement, and soon receive the clue sending them to the Pit Stop. James & Sarah and Sticky & Sam arrive at the Four Points Sheraton and both race toward the helipad on top, but James & Sarah are first to find it and see host Grant Bowler, who informs them that they are the first team, and that as the winners of this leg of the Race, they have won an adrenaline-packed luxury holiday to the world's action capital, Queenstown, New Zealand, including flights, accommodation and the adventure of a lifetime. The prize, courtesy of Pump water, is valued at A$10,000. Afterwards, Sarah says that she and James surprised themselves by being nice to each other on the leg, and it paid off. Sticky & Sam are the second team to check in.
At Meydan Racecourse, Shane & Andrew select horses 13 and 8 for the final race of the meeting. Shane wasn't looking forward to the idea of piggy-backing Andrew along the course because he weighed close to 100 kilograms. Neither of their horses win, so Andrew prepares to ride Shane 200 metres along the course to the finish line. Joseph & Grace and Michelle & Jo are the third and fourth teams to check in. At first, Shane & Andrew think that their piggy-back will be on a grass track, but it turns out to be on the muddy track used for the racing. Shane crosses the finish line and he and Andrew receive the clue to the Pit Stop.
Although the thought occurs to Kym & Donna that other teams could be having problems, they find that they are too burnt out. Lucy & Emilia also have difficulty with driving around Dubai. They drive into a street with a sign that they are entering a private area, and as they drive toward a building without a clue as to what it is, they see men with machine guns run towards their car, and freak out at that point. The men take Lucy's passport and international driver's licence and tell the sisters to follow them. Things really get scary when they arrive at a police station and find that they are under arrest.
Ross & Tarryn finally arrive at Meydan Racecourse. Being too late for the races, Ross has to carry Tarryn along the track, a task Tarryn remembers was easier for Ross when she was a little girl. As they piggy-back, Paul & Steve also arrive at the track, and as Paul carries Steve along the finishing straight, Ross & Tarryn receive the clue for the Pit Stop. Shane & Andrew arrive at the helipad to be checked in fifth. Emilia hands a piece of paper with the place that she and Lucy are trying to go, the Meydan Racecourse. Their wrong turn had seen them end up in a palace. They are finally released with a warning, which Lucy describes on the drive afterwards as a typical Friday night for the sisters. Paul & Steve check in at the helipad in sixth, and Ross & Tarryn are seventh.
Lucy & Emilia finally arrive at Meydan Racecourse and are surprised to see it still open. With the races well and truly over, Lucy has to carry Emilia along the course for 200 metres, but has trouble squatting down for Emilia to get on. Lucy finally gets Emilia to sit on the rail on the side of the track and use it to get on her back, despite it not being made for that purpose. As they carry on down the course, Emilia apologises to Lucy for eating so much ice cream as a child. They cross the finish line and receive the clue to the Pit Stop as Kym & Donna, still driving aimlessly around Dubai, find a place to pull over. Lucy & Emilia reach the helipad, and after Grant tells them that they are team number eight, there is a moment of silence as the sisters realise that in spite of their ordeal, they are still in the race.
Donna is asleep in Kym's arms in a car park near the Dubai World Trade Centre when they receive a surprise visit from Grant. He knocks on the door to wake them up, and they emerge from their car still looking beat, admitting that they tried for several hours to get to the next challenge at Meydan Racecourse, until they thought that they just couldn't do it anymore. Grant also makes the point that they have been short on cash, with Donna confirming they have had no money since India, and that even $5 would have been enough for them to romp it in. Grant tells them that by failing to make it to the Pit Stop, their race ends here. Afterwards, Kym says that he and Donna came on the Race for the experience and to have fun together. Kym adds that they didn't expect the Race to be easy, but she did expect them to be hungry, tired and put under a lot of pressure. The Race confirmed for Kym that his number one thing was to protect Donna.
