Mauthausen, a thousand year-old town on the Danube, was for seven terrible years at the center of the horrific Nazi culture of brutality and slave labor that spread across most of Austria. MAUTHAUSEN TWICE, a documentary by Seth Feldman, takes us through that town today, from its bridge across the river, through its faux medieval streets, and out to the concentration camp that shared its name. The film reflects on its own mission to see what history looks like, and asks if the entire project of history itself is a futile attempt to step in the same river twice.
