When the Robertson family home is likely to be demolished along with the parish church for a development in her native small town, would be-painter, whose self-absorbed indecisiveness just wrecked her relationship with a perfect fiance, she returns home. Pastor Fred reconsiders his lack of ambition to fight for the church, which is the center of the locals' memories, when Sarah resolves to take the lead. Stupidly clashing with the sheriff gets her in contact with ever-helpful town councilor and attorney Roger Waters, who quickly gets a crush on her. Meanwhile her mother Jeannie, who still refuses to abandon the hippie era and her dreams, discovers Larry, the presumed-Vietnam-killed true love she gave up for Sarah's father while being pregnant. So Kate in the process, reversing town council building approval requires a miracle, or a historical cause to protect the church as monument.
