Rutherford makes note that Tom Paris and Nick Locarno almost look the same.
In this episode, Robert Duncan McNeill makes his third cameo appearance, having now voiced both of his characters, Tom Paris and Nick Locarno, from the Star Trek universe. This achievement ties him with Jonathan Frakes (Will Riker), who also had three appearances on the show, making them the actors with the most legacy character cameos in the series. Notably, several other actors have returned to voice their characters in the show, including John De Lancie (Q), George Takei (Sulu), Marina Sirtis (Troi), James Cromwell (Zaferain Cockran), Nana Visitor (Kira), and Armin Shimerman (Quark). Jeffrey Combs (AGIMUS) also made a return, but due to his previous character's fates or their minor roles, he did not voice the characters he was best known for in the Trek universe.
The Federation starship that Mariner uses to escape with the Genesis device is the USS Passaro (NCC-52670). It is a Steamrunner Class Starship, one of the Ship Classes that was first introduced in the movie Star Trek: First Contact.
Much of the episode is a throwback to Wrath of Khan, including the ships hiding in the nebula, and the music.
The symbol on Nick Locarno's jacket, seen large on the back and small on the front left, is a rendering of a Kolvoord Starburst. An unsuccessful attempt at this banned maneuver, instigated by then-team leader cadet Nick Locarno, caused the death of Nova Squadron member Joshua Albert in Star Trek TNG episode "The First Duty."
