- [first lines]
- Lauren Reed: [as Kate settles in informally during meeting] Have you ever considered setting your clocks forward so that you're not always late?
- Kate Reed: No.
- Lauren Reed: [at meeting] Ben, where are you?
- Ben Grogan: Oh, you know me, I'm... litigating. I'm making money. You're streamlining and
- [with reference to Kate's eating:]
- Ben Grogan: brunching or whatever.
- Lauren Reed: [winking] I brought in six new corporate clients.
- Ben Grogan: [impressed] Okay.
- [to Kate:]
- Ben Grogan: And what is it you do?
- Kate Reed: Me?
- Ben Grogan: Yeah.
- Kate Reed: Oh, you know, bonbons, bubble baths, naps, shoe shopping.
- Ben Grogan: [patronizingly] Oh, that's right, you mediate. You take potentially lucrative lawsuits and try and settle them out of court.
- Kate Reed: My hourly rate is higher than yours.
- Ben Grogan: [snaps] Irrelevant. I work on contingency.
- Ben Grogan: Second rule of humanity: Somebody's gotta fail. Survival of the fittest, baby.
- Kate Reed: Is that your excuse for not having a conscience, Darwin?
- Ben Grogan: No, not being born with one is.
- [to Lauren:]
- Ben Grogan: Are we done? I'm busy.
- Lance Ward: [regarding the work to be done, a box of files, with no concern for those tred upon] You can figure on an hour an inch.
- [chuckles]
- Lance Ward: That was a banker joke.
- Kate Reed: Shoot me. I'll bet that was a banker's joke too.
- Lance Ward: Just keep and eye on the clock. And try not to get emotionally involved.
- Lauren Reed: Aaron Davidson wants Reed & Reed to represent his campaign.
- Kate Reed: He's a self-serving viper, why would we do that?
- Lauren Reed: He's the most powerful man in the city.
- Kate Reed: Lauren, how could you even consider it?
- Lauren Reed: Kate, I... I don't think we can just view this through a personal lens.
- Kate Reed: Oh, really? What kind of lens do you use? I mean, forget that Justin's my ex. He is the better candidate.
- Lauren Reed: Maybe. But cultivating a relationship with the candidate that is gonna end up running that office is just smart business.
- Kate Reed: Oh, you have a crystal ball now?
- [rises]
- Kate Reed: I have a dinner.
- Lauren Reed: Walt, there's... there's something else.
- Kate Reed: You know, I divorced Justin. That doesn't mean that I'm ready to work against him. I mean, if you've already made up your mind, why did you even bother asking?
- [leaves]
- Lauren Reed: I...
- [calling after her:]
- Lauren Reed: Kate!
- Ben Grogan: That was quite a show. It isn't every day you get to see a cuckoo bird work out her issues on a drug den.
- Justin Patrick: Listen to me, Kate. Kate, hey, I never wanted to hurt you!
- Kate Reed: [as she storms away] Fallout's a bitch!
- Kate Reed: [to Ben] You know what? Do not measure me by your yardstick. Okay? You and I, we are nothing alike.
- Ben Grogan: [Kate's about to follow drug dealer] Hey, I can come with you.
- [she gives him a disparaging look]
- Ben Grogan: Okay, go get 'em, tiger.
