This month marks four years since it was announced that Ben Wheatley, whose latest film Meg 2: The Trench is in theatres now (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with Wheatley Here), would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production because of the pandemic shutdown… but now it has been revived, and Wheatley has confirmed that it’s going to be his next project!
During an appearance at an Empire VIP screening of Meg 2: The Trench, Wheatley said (with thanks to Fangoria for the transcription), “What I’m doing next is six hours for Channel 4, [a] TV series, a horror-based thing […] In the same...

With a host of impressive, eclectic projects to his name – Armie Hammer is an actor you might want to start paying real attention (Call Me By Your Name isn’t far away now, after all). His latest is Final Portrait, where he plays journalist James Lord, who has the pleasure/burden of posing for a portrait for Swiss artist Giacometti (Geoffrey Rush) – in a film directed by Stanley Tucci.
We sat down with Hammer at the Berlin film festival to speak about the role at hand – and what it was like collaborating with both Rush and Tucci. He speaks about his own ambitions to one day direct, his struggles in becoming the actor he is today, and why he’s started to turn to independent features. He also goes on to discuss his nomadic upbringing, his future project Freak Shift with Ben Wheatley, and the downsides to being famous.

Upcoming slate includes new films from Steve McQueen, Mike Leigh, Lenny Abrahamson and Ben Wheatley.
Film4 boss Daniel Battsek last night confirmed that the division has secured a £25m budget for 2017/18 for the second year in a row.
The funding boost once again gives the broadcaster a significantly increased war chest on the £15m it was previously allocated and the £10-13m of BBC Films.
The division’s funding was increased to the record £25m in 2016 under the stewardship of former director David Kosse.
Speaking at the company’s annual pre-Cannes bash, Battsek, who took over from Kosse last July, praised outgoing Channel4 boss David Abraham for his commitment to Film4 and lamented the departure of Film4 head of creative Rose Garnett who is departing to lead BBC Films.

Ben Wheatley, no doubt, has a twisted sense of humor. Just watch “High-Rise,” or, even, “Kill List” for further proof of his subtle dark comedy in the most twisted of situations. His latest film, “Free Fire,” is an ultra-violent action-comedy that features a barrage of bullets, zingy one-liners and, yes, even a little bit of slapstick added to the mix.

First thing: it sounds awesome.
This weekend, Ben Wheatley will unleash his blood-spattered gunfight film Free Fire into movie theaters around the world. And while I may not be the movie’s biggest fan — I’ll discuss it in-depth on Monday’s episode of After the Credits, but suffice to say it’s five pounds of movie in a ten pound bag — I find myself aggressively rooting for it to succeed based entirely on the premise of Wheatley’s next movie. You see, Wheatley is about to make a movie about soldiers fighting mutant crabs in sewers, and that’s a movie the world desperately needs to see. #MakeAmericaFightGiantCrabsAgain, if you prefer. I know the kids are all about a catchy hashtag.

For many years, director Ben Wheatley has been one of Britain’s top genre exports from his early supernatural crime-thriller Kill List to the dark comedy Sightseers and the trippy war movie, A Field in England. Last year, he even took on the difficult task of adapting J.B. Ballard’s High-Rise, starring Tom Hiddleston, a crazy movie that also paid homage to another great British filmmaker, Stanley Kubrick. (All of these movies were either written, co-written and/or edited by Wheatley’s long-time silent partner, Amy Jump.)
Wheatley’s new movie Free Fire features an amazing ensemble cast that includes Brie Larson, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Sharlto Copley, Michael Smiley and more, as it sets up a gun deal that goes wrong and turns into a violent shoot out inside an abandoned warehouse.

If the thought of a 90-minute gunfight seems crazy to you, well, you don’t know Ben Wheatley. While the director has long been a favorite of genre film fans everywhere – his 2011 debut feature “Kill List” sits near the top of most lists of the best horror films of the decade – it is only recently that Wheatley has pivoted into slightly more mainstream fare, carving a niche out for himself as a purveyor of art film quality and B-movie execution.

If you’ve kept on top of the great genre films coming from overseas, then you’ll already be familiar with British director Ben Wheatley, whose 2011 film Kill List put him on the map with its mix of crime and the supernatural. He’s made a few other films since then, including last year’s Jg Ballard adaptation High-Rise with Tom Hiddleston, and his upcoming movie, Free Fire, a feature length star-studded shoot-out, which will probably get the widest release of his career.
It makes one wonder when Wheatley might jump over to directing studio movies, and that’s likely to happen with his movie based on Frank Miller and Geof Darrow’s Eisner-winning comic book series, Hard Boiled, which was published in the early nineties by Dark Horse Comics.

After a string of blockbuster comedies starring Will Ferrell — Anchorman, The Other Guys, Step Brothers — writer-director Adam McKay side-stepped a little a couple years back with The Big Short, an ensemble flick about the real-life housing bubble collapse of the mid-2000s. The film earned the best reviews of McKay’s well-reviewed career, and wound up with five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, and one win for McKay’s screenplay (with Charles Randolph).
It shouldn’t be surprising then that for his big screen follow-up, McKay would return to the ripped-from-the-headlines genre, this time tackling a biopic of one of the most shadowy and misunderstood figures of this century to-date: Former Vice President Dick Cheney. And the cast he’s building? Start polishing the Oscars.

If you haven’t settled on your one true pairing yet, today’s casting news is about to make things a lot easier. Ben Wheatley (Free Fire) is hard at work on his next feature: Freakshift. Wheatley co-wrote the script for Freakshift with Amy Jump, and its premise is sufficiently cool:
“A band of misfit cops hunt down and kill nocturnal underground monsters.”
Honestly, Wheatley had me at “hunt.” In an appearance on the podcast Kernels, Wheatley elaborated on the film’s premise by touting it as a sci-fi film about “women with shotguns fighting giant crabs.” Although Wheatley joked about the film selling itself, it kinda just does. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. had a lot of things going for it: A solid cast, exotic locales, gorgeous mod fashions, and enough accents to fill a United Nations meetings. The only thing it was missing—aside from some editing—was crab monsters, obviously. Because we probably won’t be getting a sequel to remedy that fact anytime soon, U.N.C.L.E. costars Alicia Vikander and Armie Hammer have found another project that will allow them to destroy oversize crustaceans. Deadline reports Vikander and Hammer have signed on to star in Freakshift, an action-thriller from Ben Wheatley.

Once Alicia Vikander finishes raiding tombs for Roar Uthaug (The Wave), it seems that she may stay underground to hunt monsters for Ben Wheatley (High Rise). Deadline reports that Vikander is in talks to star in Wheatley's latest, a "cops vs. monsters" action-thriller by the name of Freakshift. The Oscar winning Alicia Vikander eyes more action after Tomb Raider with Ben Wheatley's monster-hunter film, Freakshift.
Alicia Vikander is definitely in the midst of a moment after winning an Oscar for 2015’s The Danish Girl. Next set to appear as Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider reboot, Vikander is certainly stepping deep into the world of action movies, and the tentative one that’s being lined up after that sounds even more interesting: as per Deadline, Vikander is in talks to star in Freakshift, a new Ben Wheatley action movie with horror elements.
Wheatley has also been on the rise in recent years with films like A Field in England, High-Rise, and next week's hotly anticipated Free Fire under his belt. Also with Free Fire, an action movie that stars Brie Larson, Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, and Cillian Murphy, getting raves on the festival circuit,...

The news here is that uber-talented Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander will headline the cast of Freakshift, a monster movie that was originally announced back in 2012. The other way to look at that news is that director Ben Wheatley, one of the most inventive and thrilling people making movies on the planet at the moment, has landed […]

Ben Wheatley’s FreeFire is yet to hit cinemas but talk surrounding his next venture, monster caper Freakshift, currently features Oscar Winner Alicia Vikander in talks to take the lead after she finishes kicking some serious butt in the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot.

Freakshift has been a passion project for Wheatley for many years and production looks all set to begin in August, exactly when Vikander ties up all loose ends as Lara Croft. Good Timing? Or is she simply a sure thing to sign on the dotted line for a cop vs. monster showdown?
After Wheatley’s successes with Kill List, High Rise, which starred Tom Hiddleston and Luke Evans and the forthcoming Freefire starring Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Brie Larson he is having absolutely no trouble in attracting the big guns to work on his projects.

Deadline reports that two rising Hollywood talents are coming together to stick it to some monsters, with news coming that Ben Wheatley and Alicia Vikander will soon be making a movie together. Wheatley—whose recent efforts include High-Rise and the upcoming guns-and-warehouse thriller Free Fire—is in the process of recruiting the Ex Machina star for his latest project.
Vikander is in talks to star in Freakshift, “an all-guns-blazing action thriller about a band of misfits who hunt down and kill nocturnal underground monsters” that somehow isn’t based on a comic book. Vikander—who recently starred in Matt Damon’s latest Jason Bourne movie, and opposite Michael Fassbender in The Light Between The Oceans—is currently filming on the new Tomb Raider, where she’s been honing her beast-slaying skills as video game heroine Lara Croft.

Ex Machina and Tomb Raider star Alicia Vikander may have found another cool project to star in. She's currently in talks to join Ben Wheatley's awesome sounding film project Freakshift. The film is described as an "all-guns-blazing action thriller about a band of misfits who hunt down and kill nocturnal underground monsters."
Yep... count me in. Vikander is one of my favorite actresses working today, and she is set to take on the lead female role in the film. After she's done with Tomb Raider, the actress will be in prime shape to take on another action adventure film like this.
The film is is to be even more "badass and more ambitious" than his next film coming out, called Free Fire, which looks amazingly fun! That "shoot -em up" flick boasts a great cast that includes Brie Larson, Sam Riley, Sharlto Copley, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, and Jack Reynor.

Ben Wheatley has long talked about wanting to make a movie called “Freakshift,” in which cops head out at night to hunt down and kill monsters coming up from underground. It’s the movie you need a pretty hefty budget for, and it appears after rising through the ranks with well-received genre films like “Kill List,” “High-Rise” and “Free Fire,” Wheatley finally has enough stature to secure the budget and make this passion project a reality.

Deadline reports that Alicia Vikander is in talks to lead the project, which is aiming to begin production this August. She’s currently shooting the “Tomb Raider” reboot, but that wouldn’t interfere with Wheatley’s film as production on the blockbuster is expected to wrap in early summer. Her casting would mark the latest Oscar winner to join a Wheatley movie.

How long has Ben Wheatley been waiting to make “Freakshift“? He’s been talking about it since “Kill List,” it’s been perpetually on his slate, and even circa “Sightseers,” he said it was on the way. But life happens, other projects become easier to finance, and things get pushed back. However, it finally looks like Wheatley is going to make the movie.

One of the longest-developing projects from Kill List and High-Rise director Ben Wheatley is Freakshift, a police versus creature adventure picture that has been compared to the ’80s TV classic Hill Street Blues. Five years ago, he said it’s “about a crew that’s built up this armored vehicle and they go out and have to respond to 911 calls about these big monsters that have come out of the ground.” The monsters are said to resemble “massive half-monkey mutant things and loads of weird spiders and shit,” which require chemical warfare suits to battle. As he explained, “You don’t want to get blood on you or you’ll get infected.”
It looks like the director has now found the actor that will try to avoid all that blood while going hunting. Following in the footsteps of fellow Oscar winner, Brie Larson (who leads Wheatley’s upcoming shoot-em-up Free Fire...

Toss ‘Ben Wheatley’ and ‘monster movie’ into the same sentence and you’ll no doubt turn heads and raise eyebrows across the four corners of the Internet. And yet, that’s exactly what the British auteur plans to do for his next creative venture, Freakshift, a no-holds-barred action thriller revolving around a mismatched group of bounty hunters assigned to kill underground monsters that reside deep underground.
If that wasn’t exciting enough, Deadline brings word today that the Oscar-winning Alicia Vikander is in negotiations to topline the supernatural drama as one of those aforementioned hunters. It’s early, early days, but considering that Vikander remains one of the most in-demand actresses in the business, drafting in the Swede to headline Freakshift would be a major coup for Ben Wheatley.

Meet some of the best directors working today, who haven't gone down the blockbuster movie route...
Ever find it a bit lame when the same big name directors get kicked around for every high profile project? Christopher Nolan, Jj Abrams, maybe the Russo Brothers? With so much focus on blockbuster films these days, getting a major franchise job seems like the main acknowledgement of success for a filmmaker. And yes, both the financial and creative rewards can be great. But there are plenty of other directors out there, doing their own thing, from art house auteurs to Dtv action specialists.
Here are 25 examples.
Lee Hardcastle
Even if you don’t know his name, you’ve probably seen Lee Hardcastle’s ultraviolent claymations shared on social media. He first started getting noticed for his two-minute remake of The Thing, starring the famous stop motion penguin Pingu. Far from just a cheap one-joke mash-up,...

Ben Wheatley has a 70s-set thriller in the works, and Brie Larson's joining the cast...
Among Britain's finest directors currently working, Ben Wheatley's now putting the finishing touches to his latest film, High-Rise - the adaptation of Jg Ballard's novel.
Before that, he made the wonderfully eccentric A Field In England, black comedy Sightseers, Kill List, Down Terrace, as well as a couple of great Doctor Who episodes.
Wheatley's next film is Free Fire, a 70s-set crime thriller about two gangs clashing in a secluded Boston warehouse.
Martin Scorsese's signed up as executive producer, while the confirmed cast already includes Luke Evans, Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy and Wheatley's regular collaborator, Michael Smiley.
There was once a role for Olivia Wilde, but she's since dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. In her place is Brie Larson, whose role in Short Term 12 put her firmly on the Hollywood map.

Director: Ben Wheatley
Writer: Ben Wheatley
Producers: Claire Jones, Andrew Starke
U.S. Distributor: Right Available
Cast: Unknown
While the frequently working Wheatley announced this would be his next film, it seems that filming was supposed to begin in late 2013 or early 2014. Knowing how rapidly he is able to complete his projects, we wouldn’t be surprised if this is ready for the fall, right after his version of the series “Ideal” starring Johnny Vegas has been completed. Whatever the scenario, this sounds like a return to more outlandish Wheatley territory after this year’s departure in experimental hallucinations with the inventive A Field In England.
Gist: An American sci-fi film, like “Hill Street Blues” with monsters and women cops.
Release Date: Wheatley is a festival darling, so if it’s ready by the latter end of the year, expect a possible out of competition slot somewhere.

BFI chief executive Amanda Nevill and Film Fund head Ben Roberts talk about why the controversial 7% profitability statistic doesn’t reflect the full picture of UK film success.
Amanda Nevill, the BFI’s chief executive, said that the 7% statistic (original story here) that has been recently bandied about is “pretty misleading if you understand how a film is funded”.
She also noted that the statistic shouldn’t scare away potential film investors as “before a film even goes into profits, the financiers have gotten their money back”.
Even if a film doesn’t go into net profits, it’s still “a beneficial economic activity,” she reminds the industry. “Cast and crew have been paid, VFX houses have been paid, exhibitors have made their cut.”
“The starkness of only 7% profits completely eclipses the fact that many, many films - before they even wash their face - have put in profits and salaries for people in that chain,” she added...

To say that Ben Wheatley likes to have options would be an understatement. The prolific director has already dropped one movie this year (the trippy "A Field In England," with Drafthouse Films handling the U.S. release) along with his first music video, and currently sitting in pile on desk of potential/developing projects are: "Freakshift," "I, Macrobane," "Two For Hell" and the animated "Mega Evil Motherfuckers." And while Wheatley has thus far mostly pursued movies that stem from his own brain, he's making an exception for this next one. The director has signed on helm an adaptation of J.G. Ballard's "High Rise," which still fits right into his freaky wheelhouse. A movie version of the novel has been in the works for decades, with Nicolas Roeg, David Cronenberg and most recently Vincenzo Natali all trying to mount the project. But it looks like Wheatley will be the one...

Kill List and A Field in England writer Amy Jump has written the script with Film4 on board as backers and HanWay handling international sales.
Thomas and Wheatley are lining up a 2014 UK shoot for the ‘faithful’ adaptation of Ballard’s unnerving 1975 novel about life in a modern tower block spiralling out of control.
Set in a luxury high-rise building, the book follows a group of affluent tenants hell-bent on an orgy of destruction. Cocktail parties degenerate into marauding attacks on ‘enemy’ floors and the once-luxurious amenities become an arena for technological mayhem.

Ben Wheatley has revealed details on his new film Freakshift, due to start shooting in 2014.
In an interview with Digital Spy, the Kill List and Sightseers director stated that filming would begin "in the New Year," and described the upcoming picture as "an American sci-fi film, like Hill Street Blues with monsters and women cops".
"It'll be an American cast, but it's kind of an immigrant cast so they'll be Korean, Indian, Pakistani, Irish and Polish characters. It won't be a full-blown cast of Americans, it'll be people who've gone to America to live and they're first generation," he said.
Wheatley also gave details of the film's special effects and creature design, saying: "I think the creatures are going to be a mixture of CGI and prosthetics. I think CGI is interesting but it's too expensive and limiting in terms of what you can do shot-by-shot.

It's been just four years since Ben Wheatley's first feature Down Terrace landed in cinemas, but the Brighton-based director has quickly cemented himself as one of Britain's most promising new directors. Taking well-established genres (for hitmen see Kill List, historical drama A Field in England) and turning them inside out, Wheatley makes films that are completely unlike anything else.
Digital Spy spoke to Wheatley about the movies he's made. Read below to see what he has to say on breaking through with low-key gangster drama Down Terrace, that scene from Kill List, the Keswick Pencil Museum's appearance amid Sightseers's killing spree, A Field in England's groundbreaking multi-platform release and his upcoming sci-fi Freakshift.
Down Terrace (2009)
"I'd made short films and I'd made longer shorts before Down Terrace. I did one with Robin Hill that was 60 minutes long and we made one when I was just out of college that was 80 minutes long.

While we wait for the next film by oddball British director Ben Wheatley, entitled Freakshift, it occurs that all his films operate a freaky shift – between genres, that is. His no-budget debut Down Terrace turned from family comedy to brutal gang drama; in Kill List, a hitman thriller veered into occult horror; Sightseers slipped between sitcom domesticity and serial-killer realism. Wheatley’s fourth feature A Field in England is his most unclassifiable yet, blending historical drama, 1960s psychedelia and formal experimentation. (It’s also the first film ever to be released similtaneously on every platform: in cinemas, on free TV, on DVD and video-on-demand.)...
