The 'prostitution ring' portrayed in the movie is actually mislabeled by the characters, as all elements of the business follow the same legalities as making an adult film.
During the scene where Liebning is dancing with Sophia, Sean Nelson improvised a wide variety of creepy and disturbing lines with Danielle Barnum. As many of the extras were unprepared for the nature of his character, some can be spotted looking sincerely uncomfortable during the shot.
The film was shot in 15 days in and around the Seattle area. Director Joey Johnson frequently mentioned that a single day of rain would sink the production. Six hours following the final shot, the skies opened up.
The script had been in development since 2003, but was preceded by a novella that Johnson wrote in 1999, which in turn was preceded by a short story titled 'Conversations' that he wrote his junior year in high school (1994).
