Edward Elgar was a brilliant but tormented English composer. He derived much inspiration for his music from walking and riding on the Malvern Hills. I too was born on the Malvern Hills and lived there throughout my early life. My Grandmother was also Church organist, so I heard his music from an early age. I have read a moderate amount Elgar in the past but I never really understood his character in any depth. This film has greatly enhanced my understanding by explaining the triumphs and disasters that befell his life. It contains many intimate details of letters to friends and particularly the women in his life who he loved and the inspiration he derived from them as a result. I found the interviews with eminent and devoted experts fascinating and enlightening. I have watched it about 5 times now and each time I have gleaned more about Elgar and his music. I now believe I know much more about his complex character, which consequently makes the music so much more understandable and enjoyable. Excellent documentary.
