For its second year at Fantasia, the theme running across the curation for the shorts programme Born Of Woman has moved away from the cerebral physical fetishes, and queer emotional landscapes of last year, towards the nature of haunting. The highlights were the quieter, more introspective entries that focused on mood and precise cinematography from some impressive new cinematic voices. First and foremost was Mexico's The Last Light (pictured above), which, coincidentally or not, meticulously recreates the tone of the prologue from Don't Look Now. No small feat that, considering Nicolas Roeg's film has one of the greatest opening scenes in the history of film. Angela Mendoza shows the contrast between grieving parents and an innocent girl who are dealing with a child's murder in a rural settlement. The...

Krisha Fairchild gave one of 2016’s most acclaimed performances in Trey Edward Shults’ “Krisha,” about a woman who visits her estranged family over Thanksgiving. Now she’s set to appear in a new film entitled “September 12th” about folk music amidst a national tragedy. The film follows two strangers Elliott (Joe Purdy) and Joni (Amber Rubarth) whose lives are unexpectedly thrust together after their plane from L.A. to New York is grounded on the morning of September 11, 2001. Both accept help from Joni’s family friend (Fairchild) who lends them a rusty old Chevy van and decide to drive to New York. Though the shock of 9/11 quickly threatens to derail their journey, the pair discover they share a love for old folk songs and soon the two bond over music and bear witness to a nation that lifts each other up in the wake of tragedy. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

Gravitas Ventures has dropped a trailer and a poster for its upcoming horror release, "The Last Light." The film takes place after an apocalypse where seven strangers find themselves trapped in a building, struggling to survive as they are hunted by a mysterious creature. Cast members for "The Last Light" include Edward Furlong ("Terminator 2: Judgement Day"), Jeff Fahey ("Planet Terror," "Machete"), Yvonne Zima ("ER") and Ed Quinn ("Eureka"). The superimposition of shots and sound at the beginning of "The Last Light" trailer suggests that the film is, perhaps, a meditation on the tenuous relationship between time and memory. It remains to be seen how far writer/director/producer Andrew Hyatt can dig into this issue before giving up to the more excessive "gore-like" conventions of the horror genre. "The Last Light" will be made available on iTunes and OnDemand starting June 3rd. Check out the poster and trailer below:...

Whenever I went camping in the woods when I was a young'un, what scared me more than anything was being lost. There was something about the wilderness that seemed so…infinite, so all encompassing that if I went too far off the trail or lost contact with whoever I was with, I would never get back — it would swallow me whole. Now, combine that with tons of snow and oppressive cold.
Andrew Hyatt's feature length debut, The Frozen, reminded me mightily of that fear. The snowy mountain ranges depicted in the film are breathtaking in their beauty, but it doesn't take very long for that beauty to curdle into something very sinister.
We open on main character, Emma (Brit Morgan, best known for True Blood), staring intently at her reflection in a bathroom mirror. If you immediately...
