Over the past week or so, I've been making my way through the films of popular internet-based animator David Firth, a man whose genius is left unfortunately unrecognized in the mainstream as he probably deserves. He is sort of like a combination of Edgar Allan Poe and Don Hertzfeldt, and this comparison seems quite fitting when discussing his strongly discomforting short "Video Dating Tape". It's certainly one of his most creepy and depressing works, which is saying a lot since those two adjectives can accurately be attached to literally anything this man has worked on. Everything from the character designs to the reversed soundtrack is petrifying as the odd two minute tale is told through the bizarre narration of a quirky, fragile, and creepy 39 year old T.V. salesman (that is what he claims his occupation is, although it is quite likely that he is unemployed) that could have potentially been sexually abused as a young child. Although this is quite the downer, Firth's black sense of humor still manages to work as a sardonic undertone throughout the brief short. This is by far one of Firth's most disturbing, sad, and horrific works, so watch cautiously!
