Harmless Titillation
ade5310014 January 2020
This period movie set in the 1960's documents the sad lifestyle for call girls ensconced in a Hollywood hotel.

The plot is thin, consisting of having the girls each describe their thoughts and memories while bathing or adjusting their lingerie. One of them has a typewriter and proceeds to type while her derriere is prominently visible clad only in her underwear.

If we were in a hidden camera secreted in their boudoirs, you could argue the whole purpose of this movie is voyeurism.

Character development is minimal. So there is no bond between the actors and the audience. The seedier side of the girls' profession and risks they take is glossed over. The only "John" appears late in the sequence and is an equally sad person. The rating for this flick is accurate.

The production quality is claustrophobic and unimaginative with no outdoor shots. The camerawork and direction is adequate.

The script was very boring. There are basically several scenes, which are repeated, like a girl bathing with a soapy rotary dial phone on the edge of the bath tub.

For fans of 1960's big hairstyles and make up, this is a parade of several women coiffing, applying and adjusting their appearances. Otherwise, fast forward through the movie to take in any attractive eye candy that appeals to you.

Nudie-cutie throwback

Cult writer/director/jack of all trades Jared Masters channels his inner Doris Wishman for a misty plot free, but rather charming nudie-cutie sexploitation throwback.

The hair certainly IS big, the lashes definitely ARE long. No lies were told by that title.

70 minutes of attractive young women talking on phones, taking baths, getting dressed and looking absolutely glorious in vintage lingerie, with real stories narrated over the glamour, I had a wonderful time.

Jared Masters ain't a film maker for everyone, but his low budget, somewhat campy and kitsch style works for me more often than not.
