The Film Really Won Me Over
Frankenstein vs. Hitler (2011)
*** (out of 4)
Ace Fronton wrote and directed this homage to silent horror films. The story is pretty simple as Dr. Frankenstein is in need of a head for his monster so that he can be with his bride. Along the way the doctor discovers that someone saved Hitler's balls (I know) so he brings him back to life and soon he's battling Frankenstein's monster. FRANKENSTEIN VS. Hitler might sound really stupid and I'll admit that the story is but at the same time I can't remember the last time I was impressed so much with a picture like this. I watch all sorts of low-budget horror movies but this one here really had a few special touches that make it worth viewing. For starters, it was rather refreshing watching a B&W, silent horror picture from this era and I thought Fronton did a masterful job at making it look like something from the 20s. The director did a remarkable job with the visuals because if you just showed this to someone I think they'd really feel like they were watching a silent picture from that era. I loved the look of the sets, the use of stock footage for the lightening and of course there are the monsters. I thought there were some nice homages scattered throughout the picture and I'm sure die-hard horror fans will pick up on them. The way Hitler is brought back to life was rather silly but I must admit that it made me laugh. The performances were also quite good and fit in with the silent picture style of acting. Again, the story itself is nothing to write home about but director Fronton has done an extremely impressive job recreating a silent picture and this here is well worth watching.
