Ricky Ko is a Hong Kong film director. Time (2021) is his directorial debut, with its premiere at Hong Kong International Film Festival. Before this, he worked as an assistant on a number of films, including Herman Yau’s Ip Man: The Final Fight (2013).
On the occasion of his film screening at International Film Festival Rotterdam, we speak with him about the cast of veterans he had for the movie, the impressive intro of the movie, friendship, shooting movies for the audience, Hong Kong cinema and other topics.
How do feel that you have completed your first feature film?
It is a very nice sentiment. I have been working in the film industry for more than 20 years, and finally I managed to become a director. I feel really happy.
How was the transition, from an assistant to the main director?
It was really smooth actually, I did not have any particular shooting with the movie,...

Ip Man: Kung Fu Master is the latest film to portray the legendary grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Ip Man, the real life teacher of Bruce Lee who lived from 1983 to 1972. All the films have been heavily fictionalized, and the Ip Man film franchise is far from unified. There have been multiple actors, directors and filmmakers featuring Ip Man, and this new film is independent from all of those, although confusingly enough, it’s very connected.
The most prominent Ip Man franchise stars Donnie Yen. It began in 2008 with Ip Man and retained the same core team for four installments: directed by Wilson Yip, produced by Raymond Wong, and written by Edmond Wong.
Yip and Yen collaborated in some previous critically acclaimed martial arts films like Kill Zone (aka Spl: Sha Po Lang), Dragon Tiger Gate, and Flashpoint – all of which were well regarded for their high octane...

The sturdy but shallow martial arts melodrama “Ip Man 4: The Finale” isn’t much more than what fans have already gotten from the popular action franchise.
In their latest collaboration, series director Wilson Yip (2011’s “A Chinese Ghost Story”) and star Donnie Yen stick to their already established formula: their version of real-life Wing Chun instructor Man Ip (Yen) fights anybody who dismisses kung fu. This time, Ip takes on racist American Marines and policemen in San Francisco during the mid-’60s.
“The Finale”‘s new American setting — Yip and Yen’s last two “Ip Man” movies are set in Hong Kong, while their first one takes place in Foshan, China — also coincidentally gives the director-star duo an opportunity to issue a small corrective to “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood” and its provocative depiction of Bruce Lee (here played by Danny Chan), Ip’s most famous student, by...

Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Opening this week across North America is Master Z: Ip Man Legacy, the seventh Ip Man-related film to have been released since the first one appeared just over ten years ago, in December of 2008. Produced by Raymond Wong Bak-ming, one of the founding comedians of the influential 1980s studio Cinema City, and directed by Wilson Yip, the film starred Donnie Yen as the Wing Chun master most famous for being one of Bruce Lee’s teachers. Ip Man was a big success, both critically (it won the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Picture) and commercially, and spawned two sequels (with a third on the way later in 2019) and this spin-off film, starring Zhang Jin. It also inspired a couple of fine films by Herman Yau about...

The last time I saw Anthony Wong fighting onscreen, he was battling Sammo Hung in the very silly “Naked Soldier” movie. Anyways, Hung isn’t around in Wong’s latest, “Ip Man: The Final Fight”, but Eric Tsang showed up to lend a hand — or a fist of fury or two. (Curiously, Hung appeared in “Ip Man 2″ starring Donnie Yen as the titular hero.) Take a look at a new English-subtitled trailer and images for Herman Yau’s film. I’m sure the film itself is pretty action-packed, something you don’t actually get a sense of in this new, rather whimsical trailer. You can watch the first much more action-heavy trailer here. In post-war Hong Kong, legendary Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man is reluctantly called into action once more, when what begin as simple challenges from rival kung fu styles soon draw him into the dark and dangerous underworld of the Triads.

Hong Kong — "Ip Man: The Final Fight," about the latter years of the Wing Chun master Ip Man, will open the Hong Kong International Film Festival next month.
The martial arts master has been portrayed many times on the big screen, most recently by Tony Leung in Wong Kar Wai's "The Grandmaster."
Anthony Wong, the new film's leading man, said comparing the roles was hard because he plays a different time in Ip Man's life. He plays Ip Man from his arrival in Hong Kong in 1949 until his death.
"There are photos of Ip during this time of his life, there is a video of him practicing with wooden sticks for me to portray," Wong said at a news conference Thursday to announce the festival's lineup. "However, how he talked, how he behaved, no one really knows. That left a lot for the imagination, but in comparison, there are...

I am dying to see Wong Kar Wai’s version of Ip Man, but it might be a while before “The Grandmasters” finally shows up on U.S. shores — or an import DVD becomes available … until some U.S. distributor grabs the movie and yanks said import DVDs off the market. Apparently Hong Kong and Chinese audiences can’t get enough of Ip Man, either, because ready or not, here’s another one from director Herman Yau, who previously directed 2010′s “The Legend Is Born: Ip Man”, so this is a sequel to that. “Ip Man: The Final Fight” stars the venerable Hong Kong actor Anthony Wong as the titular, older grandmaster, and you can take a gander at the trailer below. Ip Man, The Final Battle is set in postwar Hong Kong, with the grandmaster trying to live quietly while teaching his art of Wing Chun. But after accepting...

Director Herman Yau reunites with The Untold Story actor Anthony Wong in Ip Man: The Final Fight. The semi-biopic is the follow-up to Yau's The Legend Is Born: Ip Man, and while the first film focused on his early life, the new picture tells the story of his last battle during his elderly years, in the period leading up to his death. To prepare for the role, Wong trained extensively in Wing Chun for a year. This interpretation is one of many to join the Ip Man bandwagon. Among the related projects based on the legendary martial artist is Wong Kar-wai's The Grandmaster, with Tony Leung Chiu-wai in the title role. Pegasus Motion Pictures announced that Donnie Yen will return in the third installment of...
