I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it, don’t wait for it, just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men’s store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee. Or, it could be a listen to this Lynchian mixtape inspired by the massive cast list released for the new iteration of Twin Peaks, which has a surprising number of musicians along with actors.
This list includes, but is not limited to, Trent Reznor, Eddie Vedder, Sky Ferreia, and Sharon Van Etten, along with actors who also dabble in music such as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Monica Bellucci, and Richard Chamberlain. The songs are tailor-fitted to the mood of the show, a combination of the eerie, sad, dark, joyous, and full of life.

It's been a while since I caught up with Trent Reznor. Since we last spoke he's won an Oscar for composing (with Atticus Ross) David Fincher's "Social Network" score and gone on to collaborate with the director on "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" and "Gone Girl." He's also somehow found time to put out a new Nine Inch Nails album and knock out a few tours, though at a recent Las Vegas show he announced that this recent jaunt with Seattle band Soundgarden would be his last for a long time. Is he refocusing and doubling down on his efforts in the world of film music composition? Maybe. Funnily enough, we were speaking on Tuesday, which happened to be a day after Nin's debut album "Pretty Hate Machine" celebrated its 25th anniversary (Oct. 20, 1989), which by anyone's measure is just bonkers to consider. "Head Like a Hole" is a 25-year-old song?...

In the realm of dark musical delights, 2013 has been quite a historic year: legends in their respective genres returned and/or reunited, while others marked the swan songs of their careers; iconic artists turned out some of their finest work, while some innovative up-and-comers set loose fresh and evil earworms on our collective brains. Honestly, it was damn near impossible for me to narrow the list down to just thirteen entries – a mere Top 10 was out of the question – and cutting names felt like chopping off my own extremities (which I'll admit would be an impressive journalistic statement, but could lead to unpleasant side effects I'd rather not deal with). Still, I found a way to make it work. Well... okay, I cheated, actually. More on that later. But for now, let's cycle back through 2013 – definitely a banner year for scary sounds! [Be sure to click on the titles for full album reviews.] 1. Maniac: Original Soundtrack If you associate old-school...

As a passionate fan of Trent Reznor's music for nearly a quarter-century, I knew this review would be quite an undertaking, but now the time has come to step up and swing. My initial thrill came early this year, when Nine Inch Nails' founder announced that his legendary band would not only be returning to the stage in 2013 after a four-year hiatus (and five years away from the studio), but had already been at work on the new album Hesitation Marks, so the excitement and anticipation was understandably high. The title, which refers to the tenuous flesh wounds made by someone contemplating suicide, suggested we were about to visit another very dark corner of Reznor's psyche – an idea reinforced by the return of mixed media artist Russell Mills, who created the cover for the band's darkest, most emotionally devastating album The Downward Spiral. But then came that inevitable...

Trent Reznor spent the better part of the year lying to you about new music, but it's all worth it now: The new Nine Inch Nails album has a title (Hesitation Marks), a September 3 release date, and a real live single. For you to listen to. Right now! Here is "Came Back Haunted," which is probably a reference to the ghosts of 1992 that are playing those guitars. (Kidding! Ghosts can't hold guitars.) Anyway, welcome back, Nine Inch Nails. ...

Just last month, we were excited to learn that industrial rock icon Trent Reznor will be re-assembling his legendary band Nine Inch Nails with an all-new lineup and a tour kicking off this summer. But that's not the only Trent event this year: this week, the experimental band How to Destroy Angels – a project Reznor founded with his wife Mariqueen Maandig, his fellow Golden Globe-winning composer Atticus Ross, and acclaimed visual artist Rob Sheridan – finally released their long-awaited full length album debut. After teasing us for two years with singles, EPs (the first self-titled release in 2010, followed by An Omen last fall) and some beautifully spooky music videos, they've made good on the ominous promise of those earlier experiments with a truly monolithic record that is equal parts ambient experimentation (in the vein of Nin's epic 1999 album The Fragile or their instrumental collection Ghosts I-iv) and dark, sultry electro-pop. While...

Nin assemble! That's the gist of Trent Reznor's announcement today on Pitchfork.com (linked directly from the title page of band's official site, shown above), wherein he revealed that the legendary electro-rock phenomenon would be “reinventing itself from scratch” and returning to the stage this summer in its new incarnation. The most significant part of Trent's new post was the revelation of the band's lineup, which will include some past collaborators as well as new core members. The band's last stage incarnation was the “Wave Goodbye” tour, which was chronicled in the amazing concert film Another Version of the Truth, which made FEARnet's best-of list for 2010 (viddy some excerpts from that show at the end of this article). “I was working with [guitarist] Adrian Belew on some musical ideas, which led to some discussion on performing, which led to some beard-scratching, which (many steps later) led to the decision to...
