AFI's Master Class: Robert Zemeckis and Don Burgess (2013)

*** (out of 4)

Director Robert Zemeckis and his favorite cinematographer Don Burgess are the guest for this third episode in the Turner Classic Movies series. As with the first two, what we basically have are the two sitting down for a chat where they discuss some of their favorite movies before discussing their favorite moments from their own films. The hour- long program then ends with people from the audience getting to ask questions about filmmaking. There's no question that the three episodes so far have had some flaws but I think film buffs or especially fans of the artists are going to enjoy this. Yes, there are countless questions that could have been asked about their work or their favorite films but with such a short running time you've got to work with what you have. There's some discussion of CARNAL KNOWLEDGE, LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, FORREST GUMP, WHAT LIES BENEATH and several others. It's always interesting to hear artists talk about their own work and I was really surprised to see something like WHAT LIES BENEASTH brought up. Even though I enjoyed the movie it seems like a title that wouldn't come up. Again, most people might not find the point but this is at least entertaining for fans of the artists and the films in question.
