The eighth annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations are often an early bellwether for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar race, mainly because they signal to Oscar voters many of the key films they should not miss. Last year’s winner, “Good Night Oppy,” did not make it to the documentary Oscar shortlist, but the year before, “Summer of Soul” went on to win the Oscar.
This year’s nominations were led by fall festival favorite “American Symphony,” Matthew Heineman’s moving portrait of musician Jon Batiste as he juggles work demands and his wife’s recurring leukemia, with six nods. It was followed by Mstyslav Chernov’s Ukraine international Oscar submission “20 Days in Mariupol,” D. A version of this story about the Emmy-nominated cinematographers of National Geographic first appeared in the Down to the Wire: Comedy/Variety/Reality/Nonfiction issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
The Emmy nominations always have their fair share of eyebrow-raisers, but there’s one company you can always count on for a bevy of nonfiction notices: National Geographic. The nature-forward brand earned eight Primetime Emmy nominations this year. It’s also unstoppable in the cinematography categories, with nine nominations and three wins in the last eight years in Outstanding Cinematography for a Nonfiction Program and nine straight nominations and five straight wins for “Life Below Zero” in Outstanding Cinematography in a Reality Program.
Nat Geo has three more cinematography nominees this year, so we talked to their directors of photography about their approach to their subjects, whether the shows are set in the desert, the rainforest or the bitter chill of Alaska.

More than 1,400 registered Gold Derby users voted worldwide to decide the winners of the 20th Annual Gold Derby TV Awards honoring the best achievements in television and streaming programs from June 2022 through May 2023. Scroll down to see the complete list of winners in all 30 categories.
“Succession” entered these awards as the top nominee with 14 bids across nine categories, and it came away with more awards than any other program. It prevailed seven times including Best Drama Series (its second victory in that category), Best Drama Actor and Best Drama Actress (first-time winner Sarah Snook). Most of the awards the corporate drama lost were to itself. The only two categories it lost to another show were Best Drama Supporting Actress (Rhea Seehorn won for “Better Call Saul”) and Best Drama Guest Actor (Nick Offerman won for “The Last of Us”).

In case it seems simple to film a visually stunning four-part wildlife docuseries like NatGeo’s “Secrets of the Elephants” over the course of a year as its 2023 Emmy-nominated cinematographer Toby Strong did, he means to assure us that it isn’t. You don’t just turn on a camera and shoot pictures of these majestic beasts gliding over the Asian plains and the African savannah. “You’re stepping in your tent because the lions just walked through your camp,” he says. “You’ve got a sandstorm coming in. You’re trying to survive driving away from the flash flood in the desert. And amid all that, you’ve got to produce an image. And when you push that red button, that image has to be excellent. You’ve got to remember that the people sitting Saturday evening with their nachos at home watching, they don’t care how tired you are.

The people behind the scenes of the documentaries and nonfiction series at this year’s Emmy Awards sat down with Gold Derby and explain several topics including the first documentary that got their attention and, in the event that they win, what would be their ideal music to play as they make their way to the stage. This was all part of Gold Derby’s Meet the Experts panel on TV Documentaries that included Leah Wolchok (“Judy Blume Forever”), Ryan White, Lucinda Axelsson (“Secrets of the Elephants”), Nikole Hannah-Jones (“The 1619 Project”) and Padma Lakshmi (“Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi”).

Lucinda Axelsson, the executive producer of “Secrets of the Elephants,” understands how iconic the large mammals are but also how much we still don’t understand about them. “There’s so much that we are just discovering about elephants that speak to their intelligence, empathy, emotional depth, that we felt that it was time that we really caught up with the latest science and found out the true secrets of the elephants,” she tells Gold Derby during our recent Meet the Experts: TV Documentary panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). Part of this was achieved by telling counterintuitive stories to what we thought we knew. “We think we know an elephant matriarch. What is more loving, giving, caring, nurturing than a female elephant? So we were trying to tell stories that made you go, ‘Oh, hang on a minute. That’s not what I thought mother elephants did.’”

A film or TV series is often most effective and potent as an artform when it makes us feel, so what are the best ways that good scores elicit an emotional response in the audience? Which film or TV scores and composers are you most fond of and why? These were some of the secrets revealed by five top composers when they joined Gold Derby’s special “Meet the Experts” Q&a event with 2023 Emmy Awards contenders: Bear McCreary (“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”), Tom Howe (“Shrinking” and “Ted Lasso”), Stephen Barton (“Star Trek: Picard”), John Powell (“Still: A Michael J. Elephants have a lot to say — and it’s much more complex than you might think. “You can hear them having conversations,” says Bob Poole, director of photography for National Geographic’s new, lushly filmed four-part docuseries, Secrets of the Elephants. “They make decisions about which way to go, for example. It’s fascinating.” Some of their talk is even too low for the human ear to grasp because “their really deep bass sounds can penetrate the ground and travel,” Poole explains. “So elephants are able to communicate with each other over long distances in frequencies that we can’t hear.” (Credit: Arwai Tang/Getty Images) Those are just a few of the amazing revelations covered in the show narrated by actress Natalie Portman and featuring the passionate insights of conservationist and elephant expert Dr. Paula Kahumbu and elephant researcher Dr. Joyce Poole (Bob’s sister). But it sounds goofily fun enough and was a great excuse to use that photo of Hawkeye (Renner) and Captain America (Anthony Mackie) enjoying each other’s company.
Elsewhere on Disney+ this month is a whole lot of Star Wars. The season 3 finale of The Mandalorian will premiere on April 19. That will be immediately followed by a fresh Star Wars series, Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures. Set during The High Republic era, this animated show will follow...

In a quest to learn more about his family, Diego (Sebastián García) joins with his friends and siblings and ends up uncovering another dimension — as well as formidable enemies who want to subdue the family and its secrets at any cost.
