It’s Groundhog Day, a strange little holiday overshadowed by a popular Bill Murray comedy that sees his selfish character become a better person thanks to a bizarre time loop. It’s a fascinating concept that can turn downright sinister within the realm of horror.
So we’re celebrating Groundhog Day by revisiting ten horror and sci-fi time loop movies that bring suspense, terror, and sometimes laughs through messing around with time…
Haunter
From director Vincenzo Natali, Haunter brings a refreshing twist to a haunted house thriller through a time loop. Abigail Breslin stars as Lisa, a teen who slowly comes to realize that she’s a ghost stuck reliving the day she was murdered in 1985 along with her family, on a perpetual loop. Lisa also discovers that she can bend time to communicate with people in other timelines, eventually working with a teen currently living in her home to...

While movie remakes are popular across genres (Anyone remember the 2018 remake of Garry Marshall's "Overboard"?), the horror genre is especially susceptible. The genre is unique insofar as its scares endure more than most. Where comedies and action movies, for instance, are inextricably linked to their time of release, a scary movie is a scary movie. With a fresh coat of paint, what was new three decades ago can seem fresh again.
A curious contemporary trend has emerged in which relatively recent titles are remade just a few years after their original releases. Released just 14 years after the first "Cabin Fever," the remake used the exact script as the original. Recently, horror filmmaker Anthony Diblasi released "Malum" in select theaters. "Malum," a remake of Diblasi's 2014 indie "Last Shift," isn't quite a shot-for-shot remake so much as it is a reimagining. With more money and more experience, Diblasi revisits his demonic fable in a new context.

Alejandro Hidalgo made his debut in 2013 with The House at the End of Time, a haunted house film with a brilliant twist. Based on that, great things were predicted for him. Instead there were several years of silence between it and the announcement of The Exorcism of God. And a few more years before the finished version made its way to festivals. As always in cases like these, the question is, was it worth the wait?
It’s 2003 and Father Peter Williams (Will Beinbrink) finds himself in a bad situation. A local woman is possessed and facing certain death unless the demon is cast out. Father Peter, who has started but not finished his training as an exorcist, defies his...

Now eighteen years later, the consequences of his sins have returned to haunt him, unleashing the greatest battle within. Directed by Alejandro Hidalgo (The House at the End of Time), the film stars Joseph Marcell, María Gabriela de Faría, Will Beinbrink, Hector Kotsifakis, and Irán Castillo. It's good to see another reinvention of the exorcism subgenre, as there have been...

“Svaha: The Sixth Finger” was never intended to be an award-grabbing festival darling, and its distribution trajectory, having a domestic release before becoming a minor hit world-wide on the internet market, clearly shows that. Neither the film, labelled as a supernatural thriller, nor its director, Jang Jae-hyun, known for his writing and directing work on similar projects like “The Priests” (both writing and directing credits) and the remake of the Venezuelan minor horror sensation “The House at the End of Time”, renamed “House of the Disappeared” for Korean version (written by Jang and directed by Lim Dae-wung), fit the festival kind of profile. But envisioned and crafted properly, “Svaha: The Sixth Finger” is more than a decent past-time, far better than Dan Brown novels’ screen adaptations (the DNA of the script and the characters has some similarities with them), but still not quite as brilliant as Na Hong-jin’s “The Wailing...
