German-born Queen Charlotte introduced a Christmas tree at a party she gave for children in 1800. The custom did not spread much beyond the royal family, until Queen Charlotte's granddaughter Victoria married her German cousin Prince Albert. Albert is sometimes erroneously credited with introducing the Christmas tree, but 13-year old Victoria writes of her Christmas tree in an 1832 journal entry.
