Marvelous Cinematography & Music let down by mediocre storyline
JakubDobos15 July 2023
I'm sad to see this in a form of 5 episode series compared to a 100 minute movie.

They went our of their way on the music, even the acting of the main young protagonist was superb, considering the fact this is her first acting performance. Especially when considering the fact how badly the character 'Adam' was played by his actor.

I also applaud their bravery of inviting a music video cinematographer to shoot this, most scenes look amazing, the location choice was great and varying.

Where it doesn't shine, are all the dialogues, which are non-sensical, feature a lot of story exposition, and a 4 to 5 times repeating during the course of the series (we get the same information multiple times). Also a very weak point is the story itself. All the "modern" references are written from the point of a middle-aged cat woman. Basically the whole story is done that way, but it is especially noticable there.

The VFX is two fold: The effects done by professionals, and what's supposedly their in-house team: you can clearly see the quality in the former, and the jarringness in the latter.

My review will be as scattered as this series' storyline, so sorry in advance for it.

I didn't get the decision of dubbing over the actors, they should've just "admitted" it and roll with their casting decision. I'd much rather read subtitles of the one Hungarian actor and let Slovaks speak Slovak, Czechs speak Czech. The dubbing company handled the excessive dubbing the best they could, and I see the good intentions, however the final result misses out on the very authentic voices of the quality part of the cast. The dubbing of 'Kocis' was useless, since his assistant spoke Slovak. His voice is signature, and it didn't go through. Same applies to 'Cinkota' and 'Marcinková', they'd have sounded much better with their own voices, but that's my subjective opinion.

The character of 'Adam' has great potential, since he can do more than we first think, but the handling of that revelation, and the "black & white" sides of the character are poorly executed.

Lots and lots of scenes felt like they were filling runtime with stuff that barely, sometimes not at all, needed to be shown on screen, and it only enforced the redundancy of the whole story.

There's one beautiful scene that clearly shows the relationship between our main protagonists, but the moment they use exposition, not once, not twice, but thrice to be sure we absolutely understand it explicitly personally ruined the whole point of showing it visually in the first place, or being an important information at all.

This repeats for most of the plot twists. A great idea, with poor execution, and exposé by characters multiple times...

Makes it hard to watch circa after the first 10 minutes of the first episode.

We were given one actually funny moment, and it's in the last episode.

In the 3 hours and 45 minutes this monstrosity has in total, you'd expect at least 5 more moments like this.

I waited to see the whole series before reviewing, but I cannot recommend anyone spending their time and money (Voyo is a paid OTT/VOD service) having to sit this through. 1/5 for me.

I'd love to see done better next time. Don't be too keen on series, CME. Finance a movie or two once in a while. I still won't let go the thought of this being rewritten and remade into a movie. Loved the concept of an exclusive series for the platform, but TV broadcast would probably help out the viewership of this, it's of comparable quality.

Could be really good, but wasn't
WilaFox24 July 2023
I was really looking forward to this series, and although the first episode didn't grab my attention, until the very end I believed that everything would change at the last minute and I would see an epic ending. However, the first minutes of the last episode revealed to me that my waiting was useless. The series really had huge potential and I convinced everyone around me that it would get better and that the end would get us all... I had never been so wrong before.

What would have suited a faster pace was slowed down, and where, on the contrary, a slower tempo would have suited it, it was too rushed. What do the mentioned technologies represent? What is the true power of the golem? Why did the original Klara have to go to another reality? Why did she have those dreams? What was Adam? After watching it, I have a lot of questions that I will probably never get an answer to.

The final scene kind of hinted that we might get a second season, but to be honest, I'm not sure I want one. All the good scenes like the death in the last episode were ruined by the next ones like the reaction of the closest person.

I saw some behind-the-scenes videos and they convinced me that the final fight was going to be really epic, but in the end, nothing happened. I know that we are in Slovakia and our production does not work miracles, but Vedma really could have been that miracle. The relationship between Tom and Klara was obvious from the very beginning, but I still didn't like that it just came out of blue. Frantisek's character was completely useless and all he did was drag out the plot unnecessarily because his scenes were nothing substantial anyway.

Klara's grandfather knew about everything, but her grandmother learned things only gradually, and that's why I expected anything other than a simple acceptance of the new fact. The fantasy elements weren't bad though. The portal to the other world was beautiful, as well as the connection of the dark ones with the alchemists, or the weapons that the dark ones used.

Vedma and conscious people made perfect sense, but I would still like to know more about them. A lot of things were not explained, which is a real shame. I regret everything that I wrote, because ever since the first mention and the first fantastic Czechoslovak series reached me, I was looking forward to how I would evaluate the masterpiece.

Annet Charitonova is just instagram influencer not actress
kotovadenisa22 August 2023
This is so hard to watch when one of main characters has one face expression. Annet is instagram/yt influencer and should stay in her field, music cirkus is not working for her, she has decided to cringe us out of voyo also. Someone below said her acting is not bad, it is, a lot of reviews are only about how talentless she is and how this is just influencer marketing since she's not even successful in music industry after so many years. I hope no next seasons cuz this whole project is kind of a joke. It looks like really annet x long music video with no acting, story or great cinematography. Even for youtube it's lame.

No great music, the worst main female lead, storyline nowhere to be seen but good cinematography
lubosdertog8 September 2023
Seen this "pearl" on voyo, because ads were everywhere and I love fantasy. No. Guys, don't do it. Came here to review as one star, even when I don't usually review anything, however I've read a review by someone else here praising the music, Klara and cinematography and decided it's time to write a review also.

Music is awful, I didn't even know why somebody would say it's good, because it was definitely annoying in the series and singer is not good at all. Looks like somebody she knows gave her that opportunity. We have great talent in Czech Republic when it comes to woman singers. And this was waaay below the cut. It's a proof we still have this here: you need to know somebody not to be good at something. After googling, surprise, surprise, she's also main actress Klara, whose acting is even worse than her singing. Definitely the weakest link. Her acting partner(and whole cast) is much more "alive". But still there's nothing good I could say about acting in general, because Klara takes a lot of your nerves when you watch it and then you're very tired to enjoy anything else.

This project is also lacking a storyline, there are story bits from different plots, but together it's not making any sense and kind of(very) confusing. With such an interesting topic and magical time for czech history, it's very "meh". But with weak casting of main female charakter, it would be "one star" even with great script.

As for cinematography, it's definitely ultimately the best aspect of this whole project but it's still lacking kind of maturity, few times it looked like a school project, maybe it's just because of cringing hard all the time because of female lead. But with Klara making this project the worst, the cinematography really makes it bearable to watch. I'd like to say thank you to that person, who was responsible for this. I hope another great fantasy(or any other) project will land in your hands and we will see more of you but finally without Klara/Annet X, because work with her is dragging you down a lot, like this project is one of the worst this year for sure and mostly cuz of fame hungry instagram blogger and music videos is definitely not your level(especially for said blogger, not real musician), I am sorry.
