You Had To Be There!
grevans8424 March 2013
Only Bayou patrons will truly appreciate the heart and detail that went into the production of The Bayou: DC's Killer Joint. If you never set foot inside this raucous romper room you won't understand the sheer joy of watching this documentary, over and over again. I understand that the 80+ minute homage was distilled from over 100 hours of interviews, performances and more. It's way too short!

The history of The Bayou is deftly displayed, from the early jazz days to the introduction of rock 'n roll and beyond. Dave Lilling, Bill Scanlan, Vinnie Perrone and Dave Nuttycombe have produced a gem, full of personal recollections, stories and anecdotes from former employees and musicians that bring The Bayou back to life. The casual viewer and music aficionado will enjoy the history of the K Street icon and the kaleidoscope of artists (Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, U2, Foreigner, Dave Matthews and a LONG list of local favorites), writers (Stephen King) and politicians who poured through the door below the Whitehurst Freeway. But to truly feel this labor of love, you had to be there!
