A new Spike Lee Joint is in the works that will reunite the director with Denzel Washington. Apple Original Films is partnering with A24 on “High and Low,” an English-language adaptation of the 1963 Akira Kurosawa crime film of the same name.
“High and Low” marks the first time Washington and Lee will work together since 2006’s “Inside Man.” It will be their fifth film together in addition to “Mo’ Better Blues,” “Malcolm X,” and “He Got Game.”
The project also brings back together Washington and Todd Black, who produced “Fences,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” and “The Equalizer” films. Washington previously starred in another Apple and A24 film, Joel Coen’s 2022 “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which netted Denzel his 10th Oscar nomination.
Production on “High and Low” will start in March. A24 plans to release the film theatrically before it streams on Apple TV+.

Hunter Schafer and Noomi Rapace will star in “Palette,” a psychological horror film directed by Zach Strauss (“Smilf”) in his feature debut.
Strauss penned the script for “Palette,” which was featured on the 2023 Black List. He is also a writer on Spike Lee’s upcoming feature “Da Understudy.”
“Palette” follows Dolly (Schafer), “a woman suffering from extreme synesthesia, a rare condition where she is able to hear colors,” according to the film’s synopsis. She is soon “recruited into a secretive, cult-like industry of color design, uncovering the dark reality of what it takes to make the world’s greatest hues.”
Rapace is set to play Latrice, the company’s enigmatic executive. Frankie Shaw is also in the cast as Sidney, Dolly’s cutthroat rival.
Schafer is starring in another horror film, Tilman Singer’s “Cuckoo,” which is set to have its world premiere at Berlin Film Festival this month.

Jonathan Majors will no longer play Dennis Rodman in an upcoming movie, a source tells CNN. According to the outlet, the actor has not officially been dropped from the project -- which is tentatively titled "48 Hours in Vegas" -- yet, but sources say the movie is being shopped around without Majors attached after the initial version in development seemed poised to go over budget. As one source put it, "I cannot imagine a world where this moves forward with Jonathan."
Majors was a rising star in recent years, earning praise for his roles in projects like "The Last Black Man in San Francisco," "Creed III," and "Da 5 Bloods" and nabbing a massive role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as overarching villain Kang the Conqueror. But in March 2023, Majors was arrested for a domestic violence incident and later found guilty of assault and harassment.

Once seen as one of the most exciting rising stars working today, Jonathan Majors' career is now looking in tatters. The actor, fresh from being found guilty on two counts in the harassment he's been the defendant in for the last couple of weeks following his arrest in March, has now been fired by Marvel, according to a company spokesperson.
A Manhattan jury found the actor guilty on Monday of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault but acquitted him on two other counts. The six-person jury found Majors not guilty on one count of intentional assault in the third degree and one count of aggravated harassment in the second degree.

Marvel Studios has parted ways with Jonathan Majors — the actor cast to play Kang, the central antagonist in the Multiverse Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — after he was convicted on Dec. 18 of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault of Grace Jabbari, his ex-girlfriend. A source close to the studio confirmed the decision to Variety.
In the verdict, Majors was also found not guilty of one count of intentional assault in the third degree and one count of aggravated harassment in the second degree.
The actor was arrested on March 25 on assault and harassment charges, after Jabbari accused Majors of assaulting her in the backseat of a private car after she took his phone to read a text message he’d received from another woman. Jabbari alleged that Majors forcefully retrieved his phone from her, causing an “excruciating” injury to her right middle finger, and when she exited the car,...

There’s no joint like a Spike Lee Joint, but what other movies does the director love?
Over four decades and 30 films, Brooklyn-raised Lee has established himself as the type of director whose work can’t be replicated. The traits that make a Spike Lee Joint a Spike Lee Joint are easy to spot: the fiery and often political subject matter, the mix of humor with drama, those iconic floaty dolly shots, and an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink approach to stylistic experimentation.
Lee’s fearlessness as a director makes for a fascinating mixed-bag of a filmography. The auteur has at least three undeniable masterpieces under his belt: 1989’s “Do the Right Thing,” a searing drama about police violence and racism; 1992’s “Malcolm X,” an epic starring Denzel Washington as the titular Civil Rights leader; and 2002’s “25th Hour,” the greatest portrait of life in New York after 9/11 put to film. Depending on who you ask,...

It’s been a tough couple of weeks for fame, whether you’re Donald Trump, Jonathan Majors, or Gwyneth Paltrow.
Anyone living in the spotlight faces the potential for a public reckoning and with that, collateral damage. After Majors was arrested and charged with assault and harassment, the news cycle cast immediate uncertainty on his future. Now, as various Majors projects let him go, the fallout exposes a film-business fallacy. When you build projects around movie stars, you create a liability.
Majors’ attorney claims evidence of his innocence, but his agency and publicity team dropped the actor this month. So did a number of upcoming projects, including Protagonist Pictures’ adaptation of the Walter Mosley novel “The Man in My Basement,” a series of ads for the Texas Rangers baseball team, and an unannounced Otis Redding biopic from Fifth Season.

Multiple “alleged abuse victims” have come forward against Jonathan Majors following his arrest last month.
According to Variety, a number of Majors’ alleged victims are cooperating with Manhattan district attorney’s office as part of the ongoing criminal case against the Creed III star, who was arrested and charged with strangulation, assault, and harassment on March 25th following an incident involving a 30-year-old woman reported to be his girlfriend. He is scheduled to make a court appearance in New York on May 8th.

In the wake of new awareness regarding whom Hollywood elevates to superstardom, the superhero cinematic world has landed on a clever fix: the multiverse. After numerous scandals, allegations, and criminal charges against their tentpole actors, franchises like Marvel and DC are probably more grateful than ever for the rise of this narrative conceit.
After all, what better way to manage embattled stars than to make them replaceable?
For franchises with billions at stake, the rise of multiverses within the Marvel and DC franchises has become an unexpected PR crisis management safety net. The concept provides the perfect narrative loophole to undo past mistakes, change storylines, and introduce new characters (or new iterations of the same beloved characters) with a handy casting switcheroo.
As Quentin Tarantino reminded comic-book audiences, DC and Marvel actors are just vessels for the true stars — characters like Hawkeye, The Flash, and Kang the Conqueror — to shine.

Update (3/26/23):
The criminal defense attorney for Jonathan Majors has made the following statement: “Jonathan Majors is completely innocent and is provably the victim of an altercation with a woman he knows…We are quickly gathering and presenting evidence to the District Attorney with the expectation that all charges will be dropped imminently.”
Adding to this, the attorney stated that “evidence includes video footage from the vehicle where this episode took place, witness testimony from the driver and others who both saw and heard the episode, and most importantly, two written statements from the woman recanting these allegations…All the evidence proves that Mr. Majors is entirely innocent and did not assault her whatsoever…Unfortunately, this incident came about because this woman was having an emotional crisis, for which she was taken to a hospital yesterday. The NYPD is required to make an arrest in these situations, and this is the only reason Mr.
