The Despicable Me movies always do very well at the box office (even if the reviews haven't remained quite as positive), so it came as no surprise that a fourth instalment in Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment's animated franchise was on the way, and a new trailer and poster have now been released.
Though Gru will appear, the Minions have really become the main focus of these movies, and there's plenty of fun to be had with the little yellow fellas in this latest teaser, which sees several "volunteers" transformed into super-powered Mega-Minions.
One gains stretchy abilities like Mr. Fantastic, another is a clear not to The Thing, and there's also a Minion with Cyclops-like optic blasts.
Check out the new trailer and poster below, and let us know if you plan on catching this one on the big screen.

Universal and Illumination’s smash The Super Mario Bros Movie finishes No. 1 to make it a wrap on Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament for 2023. While the industry is still coming out of Covid and the aftermath of the strikes, there’s no question about the major motion picture studios’ embrace of the theatrical downstream model; steamers such as Amazon and Apple realize the power of it too.
Last year’s wild ride saw the buckling of superhero movies, though Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse underscored fanboys’ hunger for something different in the genre. The year also showed that longtime box office emperor Disney can lose its clothes sometimes — in 2023 it was its overextension and hasty execution of IP Wish, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Haunted Mansion and The Marvels. Barbie and Oppenheimer, meanwhile, showed that perhaps the biggest box office weekends are best programmed with two tentpoles in the heart of summer.

CinemaCon attendees got an extended clip from Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 at Universal’s presentation Wednesday in Las Vegas.
In it, Gru (Steve Carell) teams with the villainess Poppy (Joey King) to steal a honey badger from a castle/private school. Two Minions and Gru’s baby son Junior are in tow. Calamity ensues as the honey badger awakes and creates havoc, with Gru getting hit in the butt with a tranquilizer shot.
Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).
“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.

Illumination and Nintendo will join forces to produce a new animated film based on the world of Super Mario Bros.
The companies previously partnered on last year’s “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which grossed more than $1.3 billion and became the second highest-grossing movie of 2023. It’s unclear which fanciful characters the new film will focus on — be they plumbers, princesses, Koopas or other residents of the Mushroom Kingdom — and the partners are not using the word “sequel.” However, the companies did specify that the movie will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026, in the U.S. and additional markets globally. It will be unveiled in other territories throughout April.

It's been 14 years since Illumination entered the movie scene with "Despicable Me," and in that time, the film series has become the highest-grossing animated franchise ever. It has done so on the back of catchy tunes, memorable characters, a fun story of a villain accidentally (and reluctantly) finding redemption, and also the cultural phenomenon that is the Minions.
After the second movie in the franchise, we've also seen a new spin-off movie in between each new "Despicable Me" film that's centered on the Minions and their adventures before they met their best friend and overlord Gru. Now, after a seven-year absence, Gru is finally back -- and this time, he encounters an even greater challenge than when he tried to steal the moon. Now, he's a father.
That's right, following the monumental success of "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is taking the "Shrek" route with Gru and the Minions by giving Gru a family.

Illumination is a rare animation studio, in that they have landed upon a formula for the majority of their films and they seem perfectly content in hewing to that formula no matter what stories are being told. The studio thrives on mid-budget films that bring together a recognizable ensemble, some pop songs, and stories that feel vaguely cribbed from Pixar Animation Studios without being out-and-out plagiarism. Illumination, like DreamWorks, also leans heavily on turning its films into lengthy franchises, which has given us the obnoxious and leaden "Despicable Me" series (including its multiple "Minions" spin-offs), the obnoxious and leaden "Sing" films, and the obnoxious and leaden "The Secret Life of Pets" films. For this holiday season, Illumination is trying to do another original film, but much like the first "Secret Life of Pets", the new film "Migration" is original in name only, while feeling like a flavorless mishmash of "Finding Nemo" and "Ratatouille.

Chris Meledandri’s Illumination animation house has had a boatload of hits from Despicable Me and Minions to 2023’s global smash The Super Mario Bros Movie. But in between, this underrated (in terms of awards) producer of delightful and genuinely funny toons creates new franchises by embracing originals such as The Secret Life of Pets and Sing, winners both in my book. Now, just in time for the holidays, comes Migration, about a family of ducks on the adventure of a lifetime. It is the kind of animated entertainment that all ages will find something to like, and in terms of the creative talent involved, it is a breath of fresh air in the genre.

(See full top 10 lists below.) The Universal movie, featuring Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario and Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, banked $1.36 billion worldwide at the box office to become the second-biggest animated movie of all time (after “Frozen II”).
Following “Super Mario Bros.” on Roku’s list of top-searched movies in 2023 were “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” “Avatar: The Way of Water,” “M3GAN” and “The Little Mermaid.” Note that two of the biggest theatrical releases of the year — “Barbie” ($1.44 billion in worldwide box office) and “Oppenheimer” ($952 million) — are...

Does Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” have enough heat to hit $1 billion globally? At one point, this milestone may have sounded entirely improbable for a three-hour historical drama that mostly depicts scientists talking about theoretical physics.
But sure enough, the biopic starring Cillian Murphy as the so-called father of the atomic bomb has become a full-fledged blockbuster with a fighting chance at joining the billion-dollar club. After 10 weeks of release, “Oppenheimer” has earned a staggering $926 million at the worldwide box office. It’s the third-highest grossing movie of the year, far surpassing big-budget tentpoles like Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” ($845 million), the 10th “Fast and Furious” movie ($704 million) and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” ($576 million).
To reach $1 billion, “Oppenheimer” needs to generate another $74 million worldwide. Though not impossible, this would require people to keep showing up for “Oppenheimer” over several more weeks. Global ticket sales have...

The one kid who lacks special abilities is the only person who’s able to steal the Super Stone that keeps the villain in control – but to do that, he must pull off the dangerous heist while rallying his hero friends in a war against the villains.
Superworld: Save Noah, on which the Paramount pic is based, was published by Random House Childrenn’s Books in November 2022. Their upcoming second book in the series, Superworld: Destructo World, will be published by the same label in early 2025.

Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” keeps climbing at the box office with more than $900 million in global ticket sales to date.
Over the weekend, the R-rated historical drama added $12.8 million globally, including $10.7 million overseas and $2.1 million domestically. After nine weeks of release, “Oppenehimer” has grossed a staggering $910 million worldwide, with $318 million from North American theaters and $594 million internationally.
“For ‘Oppenheimer’ to cross the $900 million global mark after just nine weeks in theaters is a remarkable achievement,” says Paul Dergarabedian, a senior Comscore analyst. “It shows how an amazing film with a superstar director and a star-studded cast can turn a three-hour historical epic into a blockbuster mainstream hit.”
“Oppenheimer,” starring Cillian Murphy as the so-called “father of the atomic bomb,” continues to crush expectations and stands as the third-highest grossing release of the year behind “Barbie” ($1.41 billion) and “The Super Mario Bros. This year's Thanksgiving weekend will be packed with new releases, but they just might be chaotic enough to coexist. Historically, the holiday has been one of the high points of the slower fall months at the box office, particularly for family movies. The current record-holder for a Thanksgiving opening is "Frozen," which grossed $67.3 million Friday-to-Sunday and $95.3 million over the full five-day holiday weekend. With the exception of "Creed II," all the other movies in the top 10 are also family films aimed at a younger audience, including "Tangled," "Moana," and "Toy Story 2."
That bodes well for "Trolls Band Together" and "Wish," two of six new wide releases hitting theaters around Thanksgiving 2023, but what about the rest? The grim world of Panem is set to return in dystopian sci-fi "The Hunger Games: The Ballads of Songbirds and Snakes." Michael Fassbender will try to coach the American Samoa soccer team into successfully scoring...

The "X-Men" movie "Dark Phoenix" was hurt by upheaval at its studio, 20th Century Fox. The film was developed during the merger between Fox and Disney; in fact, "Dark Phoenix" was released on June 7, 2019, early into the new management's tenure. During that theatrical run, it made only $254 million on a $200 million budget, ultimately losing $133 million in the worst bomb of 2019.
It's tempting to think Disney undermined "Dark Phoenix." The movie was released as a lame duck, the last product assembled before all Marvel properties were back under Disney's umbrella. Marvel Studios would've doubtlessly preferred not to inherit a completed "X-Men" film, so that they could get to work on their own versions of the characters (even if the Marvel Cinematic Universe has brought back some faces from Fox's "X-Men" movies since).
However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates there was another player who helped doom "Dark Phoenix" — James Cameron.

It’s Barbie’s world, and we’re all just living in it. Greta Gerwig’s feature film, based on the 60-year-old Mattel toy doll that first made waves in 1959, ruled the box office in its opening weekend, raking in $162 million domestically. The feature film also marked records broken for its co-writer and director Greta Gerwig and its two main stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The collaboration between Warner Bros., LuckyChap Entertainment, Mattel Films and more also set new bars for the largest non-sequel, non-remake film in July. Overseas, Gerwig’s pink-plastered comedy has made its mark as well.
Combined, “Barbie and “Oppenheimer” (Aka “Barbenheimer”) has grossed more than $511 million worldwide, $235.5 million of which was domestic. Never before in Hollywood movie history have two films opened the same weekend at over $100 million (“Barbie”) and $50 million (“Oppenheimer”).

With “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” riding high to the tune of $1.3 billion in global receipts, and as Pharrell Williams lay in the wings to offer the producer a lifetime achievement award, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri made sure to direct the lion’s share of attention to “Migration” director Benjamin Renner as the pair sat before a packed auditorium at the Annecy Animation Festival on Wednesday.
Taking the stage after premiering 25 minutes of “Migration” footage, Meledandri stepped (quite adeptly) into the role of interviewer, putting Renner in the spotlight and peppering the French filmmaker with questions about inspiration and artistry. If the interest was genuine, it was also no doubt strategic, as Meledandri inferred to Variety in an interview following the presentation.
“I would love for people to hear [directly] from Benjamin about his process and his intention,” said Meledandri. “That’s a very old fashioned idea — to get the filmmaker out there.

Having collected all the gold coins in the Mushroom Kingdom thanks to "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," Illumination is gearing up to release its next animated feature film, "Migration." The studio's first original project since 2016's "Sing", the movie follows a family of ducks as they set forth on their very first vacation. What ensues is a classic cultural clash as these humble country birds cross paths with all manner of unknown critters and baffling obstacles on the way to their sunny, tropical final destination. It's basically one of National Lampoon's "Vacation" comedies, except with animated mallards rather than Clark Griswold and his long-suffering kin.
A silly, light-hearted family flick about talking fowl, "Migration" sounds like it's firmly in the wheelhouse for the studio behind "Despicable Me," "Minions," and particularly "The Secret Life of Pets." Discussing the movie at this year's CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Illumination CEO and founder Chris Meledandri...

Melendandri exited the stage and a brief sizzle reel followed. It was focused on our fowl family, led by a father who is “afraid to leave this pond.” His mind is changed when he realizes that he can’t spend his or his family’s life hiding in the same place. Why bury the lead, Illumination, the studio that has seen tremendous success with their animated films like Despicable Me, Minions, The Grinch, The Secret Life of Pets and Sing can now lay claim to the highest grossing animated opening of all time at the global box office as The Super Mario Bros. Movie is estimated to take in around $377 million, beating the previous champ, Frozen II’s opening weekend take of $358 million. In North American, Mario became the champ for highest opening weekend for a video game based movie as it took in a reported $146.3 million, completely obliterating the previous champ: last year’s Sonic The Hedgehog 2, which opened with a 3-day take of $72.1 million. It also lays claim to the highest 5-day opening ever (for a film released on a Wednesday) with $204.6 million, beating previous champ Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen which had a $200 million Wednesday to Sunday gross.

The next potential animated hit from "Minions" studio Illumination has debuted its first teaser trailer. Meet "Migration," a film that focuses on (you guessed it) bird migration. According to the synopsis, the story follows "a family of ducks living in New England who try to convince their overprotective father to go on a vacation of a lifetime in the Bahamas."
Illumination made waves as an animation studio after releasing its first feature, "Despicable Me," alongside Universal Pictures. The film went on to spawn a franchise, including two "Despicable Me" sequels with another on the way and two spin-off films centering the weirdly lovable "Despicable Me" characters known as Minions. Illumination has also found success with its "The Secret Life of Pets" and "Sing" franchises, cementing its status within the world of children's animation that was previously dominated by Disney and Pixar almost exclusively.

As Minions studio Illumination Entertainment and Universal launch The Super Mario Bros. Movie as their first blockbuster of 2023, they have released a first-look trailer for the upcoming animated family ducks franchise pic Migration.
The teaser, which is playing before Super Mario, spends much time recalling Illumination blockbuster animation franchises like Despicable Me, Sing and The Secret Life of Pets.
The trailer turns to Illumination’s animated family of talking ducks, led by an overprotective father, as they set off on a vacation of a lifetime.
“Let’s fly,” the father says in the trailer as the family of ducks soars skywards, gleefully twisting and rolling as light as a feather on the wind as they migrate south over mountains and lakes. But driving rain soon grounds the flock and leaves the family huddled in a tree trunk for shelter amid thunderous lightening.

You might not have kids, and you may not watch children’s animated movies, and that’s fair. But in case you’re unaware, Illumination Entertainment, the animation studio that Universal distributes, is a huge, profitable hit factory, producing blockbuster animation hits like the “Minions,” franchise, “Despicable Me,” “Sing” and “The Secret Life of Pets.” If they’re not for you, fair, but look at the numbers.
