This movie succeeds neither in taking us away to a world of fantasy on the one hand, nor in establishing realism on the other hand. It takes place on a kibbutz that looks a bit too luxurious and tidy for the movie's 1950s setting, and the kibbutz seems to have one nice jacket that's lent out to whoever needs to travel into town while on the other hand the kibbutz seamstress has no problem coming up with a full set of costumes for a theatrical production. Such lapses-- and those aren't all of them-- are a pity because the movie has a good, simple, important point to make about the problems a fellow faces trying to create art, and to develop as a creator of art, in a society where art is not a high social priority.
