Rights to “I, The Executioner,” which will premiere as a Midnight Screening at the Cannes Film Festival this year, have been picked up by South Korea’s Cj Enm.
The crime-action film directed by Ryu Seung-wan (also written Ryoo Seung-wan) is a sequel to Ryu’s 2015 hit “Veteran” and in Korea goes by the title “Veteran 2.”
Few details of the story have yet been disclosed, but Cj describes the film as “combining Ryu’s trademark action with observations and messages about social change.” Ryu last year enjoyed major box office success with crime comedy “Smugglers.”
Hwang Jung-min, who recently enjoyed box office success in “12.12: The Day,” reprises his role from “Veteran.” He is joined in the sequel by Jung Hae-in (“Tune in for Love”) as a new member of the film’s Violent Crime Investigation Squad.

Austin Butler is continuing his auteur collaborations, this time partnering up with Darren Aronofsky.
Butler, who was Oscar-nominated for his breakout transformative “Elvis” role, is set to lead Aronofsky’s upcoming feature “Caught Stealing.” Novelist Charlie Huston will adapt his own work for the screen. Protozoa is producing the Sony crime thriller. The novel is the first installment of Huston’s Henry Thompson trilogy series.
“Caught Stealing” was originally set for an adaptation in 2013 with Patrick Wilson cast in the lead role, now occupied by Butler. The story follows Hank Thompson, a former high school baseball prospect turned alcoholic bartender who gets caught up in a treasure hunt through New York City. A sadistic police officer tries to outrun Thompson, hitmen, and mobsters to find the treasure. Alec Baldwin was cast as the cop in the 2013 iteration that was slated to be written by David Hayter and directed by Wayne Kramer.

Austin Butler may not be confirmed to be co-starring in Michael Mann’s Heat 2, but the Masters of the Air actor has now been reported to be set to be the lead in Caught Stealing. Since 2022’s Elvis, Austin Butler’s star has really taken off. The former Disney and Nickelodeon child actor is capitalizing on his breakout film with roles in the recently released Dune: Part Two, where he plays the ruthless Feyd-Rautha. However, Butler hasn’t turned his back on smaller films, as he is set to co-star alongside Tom Hardy in Jeff Nichols’ period drama, The Bikeriders.
Now The Hollywood Reporter is saying Butler will be working with Darren Aronofsky for Sony’s crime drama that “follows Hank Thompson, a burned-out former baseball player, as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ‘90s NYC.” Caught Stealing will be penned by Charlie Huston,...

When it was released back in 1995, Michael Mann’s film Heat became a global hit. This action thriller starring acting legends Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, as well as then-upcoming actor Val Kilmer, was one of the biggest films of the decade and has become a pillar of the genre. Although Mann had already been an established director by then, Heat further cemented his place in the history of cinema, making him one of the most important creators in the history.
Mann had a relatively long “dry streak” after 2009’s Public Enemies (Blackhat is basically a forgotten movie), to use this term, before last year’s Ferrari was released to solid reviews, with praise directed at Driver’s performance. His return to the spotlight also reignited rumors about a possible sequel to Heat, something that Hollywood has been gossiping about for some time, with Heat 2 becoming a more palpable possibility at the time.

Michael Mann and Edgar-winning author Meg Gardiner are at it again, folks! Mann announced today that the duo will collaborate on a new original story that fans of Mann’s signature style will lose their heads for. Do go on!
Mann and Gardiner’s new novel is aiming at having franchise appeal. As the first book in a new series, the project is Mann’s second novel from Michael Mann Books after signing a three-book deal with HarperCollins arm William Morrow. The publicity tour for Michael Mann’s first film in nearly a decade, Ferrari, has afforded the opportunity for the 80-year-old filmmaker to discuss forthcoming projects, including a Vietnam War drama, a sci-fi film, an adaptation of the South Korean crime thriller Veteran and, of course, what will likely be his next feature, Heat 2 starring Adam Driver. He’s also keeping busy on the novel-writing front and has announced his next project.
After teaming with Meg Gardiner on the novel for Heat 2, Deadline reports they will reunite for a new book. Ever since Michael Mann became one of the first A-list directors to embrace digital filmmaking with 2004’s “Collateral,” he’s left film behind, shooting all of his subsequent features using digital capture rather than celluloid. That might change, however; as Mann told a sold-out crowd at the American Cinematheque on January 5, he’s considering a return to film — and it will be for a sequel to his most beloved movie.
Following the Cinematheque’s screening of “Heat,” which kicked off the organization’s ongoing Michael Mann retrospective, Mann participated in a Q&a in which an audience member asked if he would ever shoot on film again. “My next film is going to be ‘Heat 2,'” Mann responded. “And I’m considering shooting that on film.” The director explained that although he has shot five films in a row on digital, he’s agnostic when it comes to formats.

James Mangold will be bringing the life and music of Bob Dylan to the big screen with A Complete Unknown. More details on the project here.
With the strikes over, Hollywood is raring to go. Several delayed projects, such as the final season of Stranger Things, season 2 of The Last Of Us and even Michael Mann’s Heat 2 are slowly but surely heading into production this year.
Another severely delayed project is James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown, a Bob Dylan biopic. According to World Of Reel, Mangold is eyeing up a late March shoot in Montreal and New York.
Here’s the plot: “A Complete Unknown follows 19 year old Bob Dylan’s arrival to New York City in 1961 seeking to find his hero, an ailing Woody Guthrie. He is embraced by the New York folk scene who recognize his talent. He finds gigs in downtown clubs and soon becomes a sensation,...

With the long-gestating biopic “Ferrari” in the rearview mirror, what’s next for director Michael Mann? Mann has teased a couple of projects in development (like this sci-fi one), but it will most likely be “Heat 2,” an adaptation of the sequel novel to his 1995 film the director published in 2022. In a recent sit-down with Variety, Mann covered where the story of “Heat 2” picks up after the events of “Heat,” when he hopes to start shooting the film, and whether or not he’ll cast someone as talented as Val Kilmer to play Chris Shiherlis.

The Ferrari director has confirmed that Heat 2 is definitely on the way and production is set to begin in 2024.
Heat is, without a question, Michael Mann’s best, most acclaimed film. Featuring powerhouse performances from Robert De Niro and Al Pacino, it’s a timeless classic of crime cinema. Mann has long been planning a sequel for the film, and there has been much speculation about whether one will ever materialise – and if so, when.
In 2022, Mann announced Heat 2 as a novel and in 2023, we finally got confirmation that a film was also on the way. The novel takes place one day after the events of the original film, but events also flash back and forward, spanning several years.

The Christmas and New Year's box office capped off 2023 with a hefty unexpected bounty. Despite not having a single outright mega-blockbuster hit like "Spider-Man: No Way Home" or "Avatar: The Way of Water" like 2021 and 2022 had, the overall final frame of the year was big enough to push the final domestic tally for the year past the $9 billion mark. A unique aspect of the most recent week was that we had a slew of movies -- "Wonka," "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," "The Color Purple," and "Migration," among others -- carrying the load. The love was spread around, which was very nice to see. Unfortunately, that love did not extend to Michael Mann's "Ferrari," which now finds itself in a precarious situation financially.
Released in theaters on Christmas Day, Mann's first movie since 2015's "Blackhat" did not find much of an audience. The film, a biopic about legendary car-maker...

Adam Driver is steering clear of journalists asking why he played back-to-back Italian icons.
The actor, who previously starred as Maurizio Gucci in Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” and recently led Michael Mann’s “Ferrari” as Enzo Ferrari, said during the “Smartless” podcast (via The Wrap) that while playing two Italian characters consecutively wasn’t “strategic,” that’s how it “worked out.”
“So many people have been like, ‘How many Italians?’ I’m like, it’s just kind of worked out that way,” Driver said, noting that perhaps someone on his PR team should have warned him it would “come up a lot” on the press tour for “Ferrari,” but “press isn’t a place where you have a nuanced conversation.”
Driver added that his casting was a “good example of not being strategic in a way that I probably should,” but working with director Mann was impossible to pass up.

In this week’s episode of The Discourse, host Mike DeAngelo gets in the driver’s seat to discuss “Ferrari” with director Michael Mann (“Heat,” “Collateral,” “Ali”). The film is based on the real-life of Enzo Ferrari, founder of Ferrari—the Italian luxury sports car manufacturer, who is played by Adam Driver. It focuses on a particular point in Enzo’s life in 1957 when bankruptcy was looming over the company, and the always-composed Italian carmaker was also experiencing heightened drama in his life due to hidden secrets coming to light.

Michael Mann’s Ferrari has raced onto screens this holiday season. The director enjoyed his time working with his star Adam Driver and will even work with him again on his next film, Heat 2. Ferrari garnered a 74% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes with our own Chris Bumbray saying in his review, “While I assume Mann might have originally planned a more ambitious, sprawling Ferrari biopic, I’m not sure that one was needed. This does the trick pretty well, with it also, as usual for the director, impeccably shot. It’s a very enjoyable, entertaining look at one of the most important names in 20th-century automobiles and an often thrilling depiction of just how dangerous a sport of auto racing can be.” You can read the rest of his review Here.

Michael Mann is one of the top directors in Hollywood, long used to calling his own shots. When Joe Roth was running Disney Motion Pictures, he asked Mann if his “60 Minutes” expose “The Insider” with Russell Crowe and Al Pacino (1999) would make money. “Probably not,” Mann said. Roth made it anyway. It wasn’t a hit ($60 million worldwide), but it scored seven Oscar nominations, including Picture, Director, Actor, and Adapted Screenplay. Like many of Mann’s movies, it also gained stature over time.
But for all of Mann’s classic films, there are as many movies that didn’t get made in his oeuvre. It takes a lot for him to decide that he should expend the time and energy to go forward with a project, partly because his standards of performance are so high. It takes a lot for him to decide that he should expend the time and energy to go forward with a project, partly because his standards of performance are so high. For example, after directing four movies with high degrees of difficulty in a row Mann...

After years of rumblings, it appears “Heat 2” is actually happening. And if you’ve read the novel by co-authored by filmmaker Michael Mann and Meg Gardiner, then you’re probably aware of the plot of the upcoming film. That said, there are still quite a few questions, particularly when it comes to the casting. Basically, the actors who come in and play the roles inhabited by folks such as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Val Kilmer are going to have big shoes to fill.

After twenty years in development, Michael Mann’s passion project about Enzo Ferrari was finally released this month. Chronicling the tumultuous period of his life in 1957 that included challenges in his personal and professional life, Ferrari is not a true biopic but rather a focused look at the man and how his name became iconic in the realm of racing and luxury cars.
Ferrari stars Adam Driver as Enzo Ferrari alongside Penelope Cruz as his wife, Laura. Turning in a searing performance, Cruz is astounding in one of the best performances of the year. Shailene Woodley also stars as Enzo’s mistress, Lina Lardi. Gabriel Leone, Jack O’Connell, and Patrick Dempsey as drivers Alfonso de Portago, Peter Collins, and Piero Taruffi. Nearly nine years since Blackhat with one hour-long TV pilot and big novel in-between doesn’t mean Michael Mann’s spent the much-better part of a decade lying dormant. The man(n) develops, develops, and develops, which is plenty effort for a noted perfectionist whose projects of late haven’t been so financially viable. Fingers crossed Ferrari––a solid, expressive bit of work––does business: he’s holding on to some long-stewing projects and hinting at ones we haven’t even heard word of yet.
In a recent interview with Uproxx, Mann reaffirms interest in a Vietnam-set project––likely his semi-recent attempts to adapt Mark Bowden’s Hue 1968, about the war’s turning-point Tet Offensive, though the outlet (I’m guessing incorrectly) refer to it as the “Battle of Wai.” In 2017 it was sketched as a 10-part FX series on which Mann would serve as a multi-episode director, but no...

Adam Driver is seemingly set to step into Robert De Niro’s shoes for Michael Mann’s Heat 2, which is shooting in 2024.
Michael Mann is currently on a press tour for his latest movie, his long-cherished biopic of Enzo Ferrari. The film, cunningly called Ferrari, has Adam Driver in the title role, and Mann is giving a selection of interviews. In the midst of them, conversation has switched to what’s expected to be his next feature, Heat 2.
Mann has already written the story of Heat 2 in a novel he co-authored with Meg Gardner. Published in the summer of 2022, it was something that had been rumoured for years before it happened. And as soon as the book was out in the world, the questions began: would this subsequently become a movie?
The answer to that questions is: yes.

Michael Mann is back at it. The director is making a triumphant return to the film world after a less-than-stellar reception to his 2015 tech thriller, Blackhat, which starred Chris Hemsworth. This year marks the release of Ferrari, his biopic of Enzo Ferrari starring Adam Driver, which is already generating positive word-of-mouth, including talk of a Best Supporting Actress nod for Driver’s co-star Penelope Cruz. Mann also has said that he will be moving on to a film adaptation of his crime novel sequel to his prolific 1995 drama, Heat. That project is also rumored to star Adam Driver.
According to Variety, Michael Mann is already at work on another project as he is now developing a remake of the Korean action-thriller-comedyVeteran from Ryoo Seung-wan. It is not yet known if Mann plans to direct the film or only be attached as a writer and producer. He is currently working with the U.

With Michael Mann finally returning to feature filmmaking this fall with Ferrari, which is enjoying a festival run ahead of its Christmas debut, the filmmaker is eying what to do next. It seems like an Adam Driver-led Heat 2 is very much in the cards––though one wonders if WB’s greenlit status will be dependent on the success of Ferrari. In the meantime, the director is also developing another project.
Variety reports the Miami Vice helmer is working on an adaptation of Ryoo Seung-wan’s 2015 crime thriller Veteran, a massive hit in South Korea as it is currently the 5th-highest-grossing film in the country. The crowd-pleaser follows a detective who is tracking down a young, wealthy, and privileged business owner who is running his own crime syndicate.
Currently in the development stage, it’s not decided yet if Mann will just produce and script or direct the project himself.

“Ferrari” director Michael Mann is planning to make a U.S. adaptation of South Korean crime thriller “Veteran.”
The project is at development stage, and Mann is working with the U.S. and Korean wings of Cj Enm, Korea’s leading film and TV conglomerate. It is currently undecided whether Mann himself will direct or just take production and writing credits.
“We are developing a script with Michael Mann, but his role and our schedule are not fixed yet,” a source close to Cj Enm told Variety.
Work halted on the project during the Hollywood screenwriters’ strike and it is unclear when development will pick up in earnest.
Mann is currently focusing on the development of “Heat 2,” which he recently confirmed as his next directing outing. The project, which is set up at Warner Bros., is the sequel to his genre-defining 1995 noir “Heat.”

Where to start with Michael Mann‘s “Ferrari“? It’s a passion project long in the making, with Mann developing it for over two decades. It’s also Mann’s first film with Adam Driver, and with rumors of Mann wanting to cast the actor in “Heat 2,” it may not be the last. And it’s the director’s first film since 2015’s “Blackhat,” an excellent and underrated film maligned by most audiences but with a devoted following.

Michael Mann returns after a hiatus with his new film, Ferrari. The prolific director has been on the festival circuit promoting his biopic drama, and talks have been floating around for a while of Mann possibly revisiting his famous 90s heist drama, Heat. Michael Mann’s iconic film notably brought together the acting powers of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino in a head-to-head cops and robbers tale. Mann released a sequel to Heat in book form last year, which he penned with co-author Meg Gardiner, and since the novel was released, rumors instantly sprang of Mann possibly doing a film version with his Ferrari leading man, Adam Driver.
Deadline is now reporting that while speaking at their Contenders London event, Mann has confirmed that his next project will, in fact, be Heat 2. He stated, “Yes. Meg Gardiner and myself wrote the novel Heat 2, which came out right when we were shooting Ferrari.

The “Lord of the Rings” and “X-Men” actor said in a Variety cover story that starring in Michael Mann’s 1983 horror film “The Keep” was among his worst memories as an actor. The film, which was critically panned upon release, follows a group of Nazi soldiers who unwittingly awaken an evil supernatural force in Romania during World War II.

Michael Mann is revisiting the disaster that was “Blackhat.”
Mann, whose upcoming “Ferrari” is his first film in eight years since 2015’s “Blackhat,” admitted to Variety that the feature was not ready to go into production.
“It’s my responsibility,” Mann said. The script was not ready to shoot.”
“Blackhat” starred Chris Hemsworth as a hacker, with Viola Davis and Tang Wei co-starring. The film made only $19.7 million at the global box office against a budget of $70 million, and became a critical flop.
However, Mann stands by the themes of the film, saying, “The subject may have been ahead of the curve, because there were a number of people who thought this was all fantasy. Wrong. Everything is stone-cold accurate.”
The writer-director spent three years in research for the “Blackhat” script, telling IndieWire that the film was a hard sell to executives.

Over eight years after the commercial failure of “Blackhat,” director Michael Mann is putting the blame where he feels it belongs: Michael Mann.
While promoting the upcoming Adam Driver vehicle “Ferrari” in an interview with Variety, the filmmaker briefly fell on his sword concerning the $70 million R-rated actioner. In January of 2015, it earned mixed-to-negative reviews and just $20 million at the global box office.
“It’s my responsibility,” Mann told the publication. “The script was not ready to shoot.” Like many of Mann’s pictures, “Blackhat” has gained a cult audience since its theatrical release, as well as a restructured director’s cut. While Mann blames himself, it also ran into the newfangled notion of audiences not wanting to see a big new movie star outside of his marquee character role.
Moviegoers didn’t care about Chris Hemsworth — talent and charisma notwithstanding — when he wasn’t playing Thor in the MCU.

Are you starting to feel the heat around the corner? Adam Driver certainly is. Consider it officially official that acclaimed director Michael Mann, who earlier this year was reported to be eyeing Driver as the lead of the feature film adaptation of his own novel "Heat 2," is gunning for the "House of Gucci" and "The Last Duel" star to step into the incredibly intimidating shoes of none other than Robert De Niro himself.
Famously cast as career criminal Neil McCauley in the original 1995 "Heat" opposite Al Pacino as cop Vincent Hanna, De Niro earned all sorts of recognition (although tragically not a Best Actor nom) for his performance in what's commonly considered one of the greatest action movies of all time. The fact that Mann even wants to return to the scene of the crime and attempt to bring his long-awaited sequel/prequel novel (co-written by both Mann and...
