Good resolution

Warning: Spoilers
I love this series I hope it continues . 6 episodes are too few to resolve the relationships between the protagonists and the others. However if they are based on Hillerman books perhaps that has something to do with it. The criminals do get their "Indian justice". We need more series of this high caliber. All the actors are fantastic especially McClodon who carries the series rather well. Now I wonder, will there be a series 3? I'm keeping my fingers crossed. So few shows are worth watching. I hope AMC follows through. This series was sensitive to the nuances of Dine cultural. So few shows to watch within this cultural setting. I live in Arizona so I am familiar with some of the Dine's cultural ways cheers to all the actors we riders and filmmakers who put this together.

Awesomeness, best episode of a very good series. This season was even better than last and I enjoyed that one quite a bit as well. However, the beauty did not need to be restored to this episode, it was a superb production. As a fan it was very satisfying to see beauty and balance restored with a little Indian justice in this final episode after watching the bad guys getting away with all kinds of evil all season long! Thank you Zahn, Robert and RR for giving us a beautiful adaptation of a story that was worthy of the wait. Hmm, any chance we can get some more? Not sure if you can improve upon this effort but I would love to give it look see...

Another great series
tonyandpam8 September 2023
First, thanks to Tony Hillerman for the Chee/Leaphorn books. I read the first of them in the late 90s and then as they came out over the years after that. When Anne published her first novel I then re-read all of Tony's books and am now a faithful fan of Anne's works. If you haven't read these books do so!

There were several attempts at bringing the Chee/Leaphorn books to film. The books are so rich that a 2-hour movie or a 2 part miniseries just can't capture the subtleties of the underlying story and the rich Navajo culture and do justice to both. This style does such a better job of having time for both! I do think this story was rushed a little and staying in the 50 minute (with commercials) time slot is restrictive. For the future don't be afraid of adding another episode or two or like some other made-for-streaming contents do go beyond the time slot.

As I finished episode 6 I realized that there were pieces that didn't connect so I watched the entire 6 episodes again. It was better the second time around.

Season 3 ought to be a gimme!

[6.1] The wail of good-bye
cjonesas15 January 2024
A mildly thrillingly beautiful season that didn't need to be made. Everything is thrillingly average, worse than season one with half-closure matters and tie-up. The acting is good, the Navajo culture beautiful, everything else is just hot weather, sand, dust and lots of hidden desert faunas.

The last episode was just a painted wail of closure and half-relief. Doesn't need a third season!

Jumped the Shark (Cliff)
montellamichaeld1 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoyed the first season. It had nuance, well-defined characters with understandable motives, and good story arcs.

Season two is different in a bad way. It started to remind me of Longmire when it went off the rails.

I think the Dark Winds really jumped the shark when Sheriff Leaphorn made his plunge off the cliff. Why? Because a little boy told him that the mad bomber had killed his son? There is no way the first season Joe Leaphorn would have done something so reckless. Part of the reason I liked him so much in the beginning was the fact that he had his feet on the ground and made decisions based on what he knew as opposed to simply overreacting to what he did not.

I also don't understand why they sidelined Jim Chee in season two. Rather than make him integral to the story, he seems to be spending a lot of times in hospital beds, hotel rooms, in cars, sitting and waiting.

Meantime, there are too many characters and too many half-finished subplots. We really don't need A. Martinez, who adds nothing to the story. I like Jeri Ryan, but same problem. If the show wanted to focus on women, why not Manuelito?

Did the cult matter? Not really. What about Rosemary Vines' (Jeri Ryan) affair? No idea. We had a whole story about Native American reproductive rights that did not mesh with anything and just killed what momentum the other stories might have had.

Just a shame.
