Sensationalism, Not Truth

What is so incredibly sad about this episode is the deliberate sensationalism, ignorance of the whole story, and the manipulation of an audience to make a dollar. Intrigued by the history of the place, I researched Eloise hospital complex with a reliable source, the Wayne County Historical Society, which has a wonderful 30 minute online video primer on the history of the facility. Expedition X would have you believe the building in the show is filled with hideous patient neglect, torturous treatment, a 'lost' mass grave, and the presence of both tormented souls and evil entities. Cast members choose evocative descriptions to ensure the viewer interprets this extremely narrow perspective as a true haunting. However, the building and the dialogue is as far from the truth is east is from west, and a shameful failure to applaud the latter-year accomplishments of amazing medical personnel on the cutting edge of mental health care. Yes, the history reveals some moments of serious ethical and moral failure. But their was learning, and medics who stopped awful practices, and introduced unheard of therapies such as occupational and music therapy. The institute became a teaching hospital for doctors from major university medical programs. And what about that haunted building? It was built in 1931 as an administration building, housing for staff, and a place for some 200+ mental health patients (who were moved to modern facilities in later decades). Hardly a site of torture and horror. And the lost cemeteries? Not lost. Nor are they "mass graves." There are 3 cemeteries total, many with tuberculosis patients (before the development of antibiotics), indigent elderly that would have otherwise been homeless, and others. Their graves were all marked and their identities recorded. The records are available to any family who wish to know. What is most horrifying is that the Kay Beard Bulding or building D is a business, one that makes its money on perpetuating a narrow perspective while ignoring the good that was done. Shameful and unworthy of the History Channel.
