Excellent documentary series

A documentary series on key battles, campaigns and wars in World history. The series covers wars from ancient times, e.g the Peloponnesian Wars, to World War 2 and most the most significant ones in between. Told through narration and interviews with experts as well as diagrams, archival footage and re-enactments.

Excellent military documentary series. Each episode covers a war, campaign or battle in great detail and in engaging fashion.

The choices of conflicts are interesting and ensure a decent spread. The best episodes are the ones where even us who are quite knowledgeable on military history get to learn something new as a lesser-known conflict is covered.

On eth negative side, there is a fair degree of overlap between some episodes, e.g. For two battles within the same war they'll often have very similar lead-ups to the battle. In examining an entire campaign or war you'll find a lot of repetition with the episode covering a significant battle within that war. So you do sometimes get the feeling you're recovering old ground.

The quality of the episodes is not consistent either. There's some excellent ones, told in great detail and in stirring fashion. Most of the remainder are still great but there's a few where the production quality suffers for some reason, e.g. Poor sound quality, clumsy re-enactments, weak scripts, hammy acting, hyperbolic, over-the-top narration. The weak episodes tend to stand out because the remainder are so good.
