Kate Millwright informs her stepmother Charlotte that her attorney has recommended that she remain in El Paso until the reading of her father's will. In fact, while this is a common plot point in movies and television shows, doing a "reading of the will" has been an obsolete practice for decades, if not longer. The executor of a will can always get a copy from the attorney for the testator (the person who signed the will), and normally so can anyone named as a beneficiary. In addition, once a will is filed with the probate court it becomes a public document, and literally anyone can review it or, for a small fee, get a copy.
