Folks, a short list has emerged for Academy Award nominating consideration. Yes, we have AMPAS announcing that they’ve pared down the list of films hoping to be nominated for Best Documentary Short Subject rather considerably. There were initially far more entries vying for one of the five available slots, but not it’s just down to ten. Obviously, only half will be among the final five receiving spots in the Oscar race, though that’s pretty good odds, all things considered. This can be a hard category to figure out as I’ve mentioned in prior years, but I can at least try and set the stage for you a bit now. It’s the least I can do, right? As always, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that this is one of the least seen categories at the Academy Awards, if not the absolute least seen.

When making Oscar predictions, I’ve learned to never underestimate the Holocaust movie. When in doubt with those pesky documentary short subjects, pick the one about the Holocaust. It sounds crass, and it’s an eye-rolling industry truism, but if you chose “The Lady in Number 6: Music Saved My Life” in 2014, you were right. Out of seven nominated Holocaust feature documentaries, six won the Oscar.
The Holocaust is a heart-rending and complicated subject. There have been many other genocides in history, of course; Oscar-winner “The Killing Fields” addressed Cambodia, and other films have examined Armenia, Rwanda, Indonesia, and Bosnia. Still, that’s nothing compared to the hundreds of movies that have addressed how Adolf Hitler and his Nazis exterminated 6 million Jews during World War II.
This year is no exception. Well-intentioned court procedural “Denial” (Bleecker Street), starring Rachel Weisz as an American academic on trial in Britain for defaming...

By the time Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made In America” aired on Espn in June, receiving near-universal acclaim from critics, Espn Films—which produced the documentary as part of the network’s popular “30 for 30” series—was already angling for attention from an Academy that, on the face of it, has nothing to do with TV. With one-week qualifying engagements at New York’s Cinema Village and Los Angeles’ Laemmle Monica Film Center, the exhaustive five-part portrait of O.J. Directed by Rory Kennedy, Last Days in Vietnam focuses on the final weeks of the Vietnam War in April 1975 and the Americans who tried to rescue as many South Vietnamese refugees that they could — against White House orders — as the North Vietnamese Army approached Saigon. Kennedy has never been nominated for an Oscar, but her 2012 documentary Ethel, about Ethel Kennedy (Rory’s mother), was nominated for five Emmys. Last Days in Vietnam, which premiered at Sundance, could garner Kennedy her first Oscar nom.

The Academy has announced the new class of invited members for 2014 and, as is typical, many of which are among last year's nominees, which includes Barkhad Abdi, Michael Fassbender, Sally Hawkins, Mads Mikkelsen, Lupita Nyong'o and June Squibb in the Actors branch not to mention curious additions such as Josh Hutcherson, Rob Riggle and Jason Statham, but, okay. The Directors branch adds Jay and Mark Duplass along with Jean-Marc Vallee, Denis Villeneuve and Thomas Vinterberg. I didn't do an immediate tally of male to female additions or other demographics, but at first glance it seems to be a wide spread batch of new additions on all fronts. The Academy is also clearly attempting to aggressively bump up the demographics as this is the second year in a row where they have added a large number of new members, well over the average of 133 new members from 2004 to 2012. As far as...

Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong’o of 12 Years a Slave were two of the 271 artists and industry leaders invited to become members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which determines nominations and winners at the annual Oscars. The entire list of Academy membership—which numbers about 6,000—isn’t public information so the annual invitation list is often the best indication of the artists involved in the prestigious awards process. It’s worth noting that invitations need to be accepted in order for artists to become members; some artists, like two-time Best Actor winner Sean Penn, have declined membership over the years.

Pop quiz: What do Chris Rock, Claire Denis, Eddie Vedder and Josh Hutcherson all have in common? Answer: They could all be Oscar voters very soon. The annual Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences invitation list always makes for interesting reading, shedding light on just how large and far-reaching the group's membership is -- or could be, depending on who accepts their invitations. This year, 271 individuals have been asked to join AMPAS, meaning every one of them could contribute to next year's Academy Awards balloting -- and it's as diverse a list as they've ever assembled. Think the Academy consists entirely of fusty retired white dudes? Not if recent Best Original Song nominee Pharrell Williams takes them up on their offer. Think it's all just a Hollywood insiders' game? Not if French arthouse titans Chantal Akerman and Olivier Assayas join the party. It's a list that subverts expectation at every turn.

Gravity may be set in space, but it achieved a landslide at the 86th Academy Awards, taking seven Oscars, while 12 Years a Slave went home with three.

Amanda Nevill, CEO of the BFI, the UK's lead film agency said: "We join the whole British film industry in congratulating Steve McQueen on the awards for his remarkable and important film, 12 Years A Slave, and Alfonso Cuarón whose astonishing film, Gravity was made right here in the UK. At last night's Academy Awards, French sci-fi short Mr. Hublot took home the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film. Immediately after its victory, the film became available on YouTube, where it can be streamed in full. Mr. Hublot runs for 11 minutes and focuses on adorable goggled man who lives in a futuristic city. To win its Academy Award, it beat out another film--Room On The Broom--that had also previously posted clips to YouTube. One of last year's Animated Short Film nominees, Fresh Guacamole, has received more than 3.7 million YouTube views to date. If rumors are to be believed, Mr. Hublot will not be the only one of this year's short film winners to find its way to the Internet. Several outlets have reported that Netflix has purchased The Lady In Number 6, which won an Academy Award in the Documentary Short Film category. The film, which chronicled Holocaust survivor Alice Herz-Somer,...

Forgetting stars in the Academy Awards "In Memoriam" segment is almost as much a tradition as the fashion and speeches. But which stars missed out on live Oscars broadcast in 2014? Cory Monteith, Dennis Farina, Sarah Jones and Tom Clancy are among those not memorialized on TV.

The 86th annual Academy Awards were really fun to watch. Ellen Degeneres did a fantastic job hosting, and I enjoyed the show she put on. It was also insanely predictable, at least, for me it was. Overall, I'm happy with all of the films that won. My favorite win of the the night was Spike Jonze taking home the Oscar for Best Original screenplay for Her. That was such an amazing movie, and I really wanted it to win that award, but I wasn't sure it would happen. My favorite speech of the night came from Best Actor winner Matthew McConaughey. I was never really a big fan of his, but over the last couple of years he has sure blown up into an amazing actor who has starred in some really incredible films. Then that speech he gave last night won me over, and now I'm on team McConaughey.

London (AP) — The big winners on Oscar night may have been set in the 19th-century American South and outer space, but for many people across the Atlantic, this year's Academy Awards belonged to Britain. Best-picture winner "12 Years a Slave" has a British director — Steve McQueen — and star, Chiwetel Ejiofor, who lost out on an acting Oscar to Matthew McConaughey. "Gravity," which took seven trophies, starred Americans Sandra Bullock and George Clooney and had a Mexican director, Alfonso Cuaron, but it was made in London, using British special effects teams and post-production facilities. "It's very obvious the amazing quality and sophistication of the British film industry made this film happen," said Cuaron, who won a directing Oscar for the 3-D space thriller. Prime Minister David Cameron was quick to praise the British successes, congratulating McQueen in a tweet Monday and calling the wins for "Gravity" ''a tribute to the brilliance of British special effects wizards.

Hard-hitting slavery drama starring Chiwetel Ejiofor becomes first film from black director to win top Academy award
• How the night unfolded
• Full list of winners
12 Years a Slave has won the best picture Oscar at the 86th Academy Awards, defeating a nine-strong field that included Gravity, The Wolf of Wall Street and American Hustle for the headline prize at this year's ceremony. 12 Years a Slave becomes the first film from a black director to take the best picture Oscar.
Directed by Steve McQueen, the landmark slavery drama stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a free man kidnapped and sold to slaveowners in 19th-century Louisiana. It was based on the bestselling memoir by Solomon Northup, first published in 1853. 12 Years a Slave follows McQueen's award-winning dramas Hunger and Shame, and was produced by among others Brad Pitt's Plan B outfit. Pitt also takes a small but pivotal role as abolitionist carpenter Samuel Bass.

The Oscars honor the best performances on film, but the telecast is all about celebrating the best speeches. Here’s how we called it:
1. Dallas Buyers Club’s Matthew McConaughey, Best Actor
Running over three minutes, the Best Actor acceptance speech was a monument of pure unfiltered McConaughey-ness. He thanked God. He thanked his late father: “I know he’s up there right now, with a big pot of gumbo…he’s probably in his underwear, and he’s got a cold can of Miller Lite, and he’s dancin’.” He went on a very long tangent about how his hero is himself — or rather,...

He thanked his late father: “I know he’s up there right now, with a big pot of gumbo…he’s probably in his underwear, and he’s got a cold can of Miller Lite, and he’s dancin’.” He went on a very long tangent about how his hero is himself — or rather,...

12 Years A Slave, Gravity, Dallas Buyers Club, Frozen and more take home the Oscars. Here's the full list of winners...
Overnight, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - AMPAS to its mates - handed out its annual clutch of Oscars. And as it turned out, the event went by the form book, with just one or two little surprises along the way.
The big prizes were split between 12 Years A Slave, Gravity and Dallas Buyers Club, with the former taking Best Picture, but Alfonso Cuaron picking up a gong for his directorial work on Gravity. Dallas Buyers Club picked up the two acting awards - for Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto - that it was broadly expected to. There were two gongs for Disney's Frozen too, in the week that it passed $1bn at the global box office.

After a lengthy awards season that lasted three long months, the race for the Oscars came to a conclusion tonight at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
This year’s 86th Academy Awards saw a split between Best Picture and Director. 12 Years A Slave won three, including Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o.
Backstage, producer/actor Brad Pitt said, “ I love this movie. I ‑‑ just as a film, as a lover of film, the filmmaking, the ‑‑ this heroic story of a man in this inhumane situation trying to get back to his family. I love this film. I love the filmmaking. It’s counterintuitive to the way we’re making films today. It’s a real achievement by Mr. McQueen here. I love this movie. I think it’s important. Lupita Nyong’o, 12 Years a Slave
Yes! Thank you to the Academy for this incredible recognition. It doesn’t escape me for one moment that so much joy in my life is thanks to so much pain in someone else’s. And so I want to salute the spirit of Patsey for her guidance. And for Solomon, thank you for telling her story and your own. Steve McQueen, you charge everything you fashion with a breath of your own spirit. Thank you so much for putting me in this position. This has been the joy of my life. 12 Years A Slave took home Best Picture, but it was Gravity that won the most golden statues with seven Oscar wins at the 86th Academy Awards.
Host Ellen DeGeneres had fun with the star-studded audience, ordering pizza and making Brad Pitt give out paper plates to lucky ladies such as Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts, who were all very hungry. DeGeneres also made fun of Jennifer Lawrence’s great fall at last year’s Oscars in her opening monologue and likening the entire awards show to The Hunger Games.
The awards went off swiftly, and not without a hitch or two, but technical difficulties aside, DeGeneres delivered a sweet, funny and uncontroversial show. Her best host moment came when she took a selfie mid-show with Streep that turned into a selfie with anyone in the first three rows who was quick enough to run and beat each other into the frame.

The 2014 Oscar Awards have been handed out and it to no real surprise... there were few surprises as 12 Years a Slave took home Best Picture as well as Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong'o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley) while Gravity, unsurprisingly, ended up taking home the night's largest number of wins with seven, none bigger than a Best Director win for Alfonso Cuaron. In the acting categories the only category that seemed up for grabs was Supporting Actress, but as I said, that went to Lupita, which may have something to do with Jennifer Lawrence wearing red... I learned on E! that no one wearing red has ever won the Oscar. Yeah, that's hard-hitting journalism right there. Dallas Buyers Club co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Best Actor and Supporting Actor respectively while Cate Blanchett took home her second Oscar, winning Best Actress for Blue Jasmine. Even on the party circuit, industry insiders who usually have a grasp of who’ll walk away with Oscars were evenly torn between Alfonso Cuaron’s 3D masterpiece Gravity and Steve McQueen’s 12 Years A Slave. Then again, there were so many terrific films that got Best Picture nominations, and all of them have at least a puncher’s chance at an upset. Related: Oscars: Pete Hammond’s Absolute Final Predictions That includes American Hustle, where David O Russell co-wrote the Best Original Script nominee with Eric Warren Singer and got tour de force performances and nominations for Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence. Perfs so strong there was no room on the nomination roster for perennial Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.

The 86th Academy Awards have just concluded, and for once we can say that there was not a single surprise to be found among any of the winners. Top honors of the night went to Steve McQueen’s slave drama 12 Years a Slave, which also took Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyong’o) and Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley).
However, you could easily say that Gravity was the big winner of the night, taking a grand total of seven Oscars, including Best Director (Alfonso Cuarón), Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects. For a while, it looked like the film was on the fast track to take the big prize, winning more Oscars than most Best Picture winners have won in the last several years. In the end though, the voters weren’t swayed by Cuarón’s masterpiece, turning to a film that they probably felt was more “up their alley.

Pencils down, the votes are in, the polls are closed and we have our 2014 Oscar Predictions. What I've done below is listed my predictions followed by the predictions from my Oscar live blog and podcast partner Laremy Legel, followed by the results from the reader polls I posted on Friday and it looks like there are only a few differences between the lot. Between Laremy and myself, Laremy is going out on a limb and I would suspect he believes American Hustle is going to somehow find its way onto more #2 and #3 lines than either 12 Years a Slave or Gravity as he has picked the David O. Russell film to take Best Picture while myself and the readership went with 12 Years a Slave. Could end up we're all wrong and it ends in the hands of Gravity and then won't we all look foolish. Laremy also went with American Hustle...
