Noah Hazard loves his girlfriend Lea and their daughter Zita (Mila Rooms). But more than that, he loves his car, a gold Lexus bearing the vanity plate H4Z4RD, which was also the film’s original title. Indeed, Hazard opens with him spending so much time taking care of it that he’s almost late picking them up, something that gives Lea’s mother (Sylvie Nawasadio; Two Much for the Job) another reason to complain about him.
After dropping Zita off at school and Lea at work, he promises to pick the girl up at 3:30. He wants to go have the chip in his windshield fixed, but he has other obligations. He’s agreed to do a job for his not-so-bright cousin Carlos but...

Plot: Swiss mountain girl Heidi is abducted by brutal government troops and must defend herself and fight a war against a cheese-fueled machinery of hate.
Review: I wasn’t familiar with the Heidi character before Mad Heidi but I know she’s quite ingrained in the childhood of many Europeans. So I can only imagine the reaction of someone who grew up with this character, only to see her kick so much ass. Because this is a revenge story more akin to Kill Bill than something you’d be reading to your children at night. From a crazy dictator who thinks the biggest crime in the world is being lactose intolerant to an officer with a very specific kink, this is exploitation in every way. And that’s why I had such a blast with it.

If the trailer for Mad Heidi doesn’t get your blood pumping for some fun Grindhouse cinema then I don’t know what will. Mad Heidi comes to us in a hail of gunfire and explosions for just One Night Only via Fathom Events. I was fortunate enough to be able to talk with Mad Heidi herself Alice Lucy as well as the main antagonist of the film played by Casper Van Dien. This was one of the most fun interviews of my career as they clearly loved the project and the end result. From finding out that all of the officer badges had the names of famous directors to discovering that Casper is lactose intolerant (a massive crime in the film), there are lots of fun revelations here. And you can never go wrong with Casper calling you out for seeing him naked. Check out the fun interview embedded below.

We've been madly anticipating Mad Heidi ever since our own Todd Brown reported on the film's crowdfunding campaign in 2018. Trent Haaga joined the screenwriting team in 2020, as our own Andrew Mack reported at the time. The finished film hit the festival circuit upon completion and, among other things, won the Audience Award at the Trieste Science+Fiction Festival, as our own Shelagh Rowan-Legg reported. Now, finally, we who reside in the lowly U.S. will have the glorious light of Mad Heidi shine upon us, though for one night only. (What? One night only?!) Yes, one night only means you'll possibly need to restructure your entire month around Wednesday, June 21, so that you can be in attendance for a very...

After several years of raising funds and filming, Mad Heidi arrives just in time to join films like Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey, The Banana Splits Movie and the Grinch-themed The Mean One in making bloody exploitation films based on our childhood memories. In this version, Heidi starts out living a carefree life in the Alps with her grandfather Alpöhi, but that’s where the similarities end.
Rather than tending to the goats, she spends her days rolling in the hay with Goat Peter (Kel Matsena; Doctors) whom her grandfather strongly disapproves of. Peter is a dealer in bootleg goat cheese, defying the state-enforced monopoly of Meili Cheese, owned by the Very Swiss Leader President Meili. In one terrible day, this...

The 18th Zurich Film Festival kicks off Sept. 22 with a muscular lineup that includes some of the year’s most anticipated international pics while also putting the spotlight on Swiss and German-language cinema.
In addition to a strong selection of U.S. films, including Oscar-winning writer-director Florian Zeller’s “The Son” and Neil Jordan’s “Marlowe,” Zurich is also honoring Sony Pictures Classics’ Michael Barker and Tom Bernard for their contribution to cinema.
“We are very proud that this year about one-fourth of our program are world or European premieres, which – especially when it comes to American films – are quite hard to get because there’s a lot of competition,” says Zff artistic director Christian Jungen.
Other big titles unspooling in Zurich include Gina Prince-Bythewood’s “The Woman King,” with Viola Davis; Martin McDonagh’s “The Banshees of Inisherin,” starring Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan; and Tobias Lindholm’s “The Good Nurse,...

"I love the smell of cheese in the morning." Time to fight back against the evil "cheese-fueled machinery of hate"! It's all been there: Blaxploitation, Mexploitation, Sexploitation, Nunsploitation, Naziploitation. We think it's about time for the first Swissploitation film! Let's take famous Swiss mountain girl Heidi, cheese and the beautiful alps and combine them with Nazi gold, chocolate and Fondue. Add a few gallons of blood and lots of fun. That's Mad Heidi! From the producer of Iron Sky (Tero Kaukomaa), this faux-vintage action film introduces us to the "Swissploitation" subgenre by exploiting and exaggerating Swiss clichés in the best tradition of classic exploitation films. In Mad Heidi, the famous "Heidi" character – now grown-up – has to liberate Switzerland from a cheese dictatorship. No official cast has been announced, as the project is still finalizing funding to begin filming. If you want to support Heidi's fight, then join in and buy Heidi Bonds!
