- It is the end of the First Schleswig War and we follow the lives of two young boys living in a rural part of Denmark. Their dad along with the baron's son, Didrich returns home as veterans. The dad sustained a leg wound and Didrich possibly got PTSD. In a modern story arch, a young girl Claudia is sent to help an old Baron.—Skjoldbro
- The world seems innocent and full of hope to the brothers, Laust and Peter, as they grow up in poor but safe conditions, working on the local estate. The year is 1851 and Denmark is beside itself with excitement, as soldiers return victorious from the three-year war. Laust and Peter are both enamored with the estate manager's daughter, the beautiful and well-read Inge, and a special friendship develops between the three children. Meanwhile political forces consider incorporating Schleswig into the Danish Kingdom, contrary to the signed peace treaty.
- Leg-injured war veteran Thøger Jensen raises his inseparable boys, extrovert Laust and Peter, as poor farmhand on the estate of a Danish baron. They grow up happily, naively admiring the victorious soldiers in the First Schleswig War (1848-51) against Prussia, with the baron's cowardly son Didrich posing as super-hero. Their friendship with the new steward's tomboy Inge nearly turns a birthday present into the family's expulsion as falsely alleged thieves. In the capital, bishop Ditlev Gothard Monrad lets the Liberals recruit him as orator to preach the conquest of all Schleswig, while ambitious minister Otto von Bismack convinces his emperor Wilhelm such progressives threaten the monarchies; hence must be squashed.—KGF Vissers
