Close-Up is a feature that spotlights films now playing on Mubi. Martin Scorsese's The Age of Innocence (1993) is showing December 17, 2017 - January 16, 2018 on Mubi in the United Kingdom. Unrequited love is tragic, like an empty party; unconsummated love is worse—it's senseless like a sinkhole or a flat soufflé. That two people should love each other equally and still not be happy or together is the problem Martin Scorsese worries over in his 1993 adaptation of Edith Wharton's The Age of Innocence. The film opens in an opera—a nod to Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard (1963), a swoony film that also takes a bleak look at high society. But while that film has flourishes and cultivates dizziness, The Age of Innocence is about a love that cannot be expressed, and the pained, stately movements of non-lovers that must navigate a life apart. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as Newland Archer, a...

Unrequited Love
If the second episode of “Outlander’s” third season was a showcase for Jamie and the important things he’s been through during his separation from Claire, Sunday night’s fifth installment was all about bringing Claire back to the forefront of the conversation by all but ignoring Jamie until the hour’s closing moment. Following Frank’s death, it was hard to feel sympathy for Claire, so this episode also served as a form of redemption. We followed her work and home life following her visit to Scotland and saw what a bleak, Jamie-less future could potentially mean for her, but that outlook didn’t last long when Roger returned with some not-so-shocking news about one A. Malcolm, the Edinburgh printer who wrote of whisky and freedom.

Unrequited Love
With Frank gone and Brianna embracing the truth about her real father, the hunt for Jamie was on in full force in 1968 Scotland. With a little help from Roger, they tracked Jamie all the way to Ardsmuir, where they promptly lost him. Meanwhile, in 1756 England the story picked up with the Helwater clan welcoming Jamie into their folds as a stablehand, with some receptions a little warmer than others. Indeed, one such reception completely altered Jamie’s life yet again with even more heartache.
Despite the different eras, at this point in the narrative it’s clear that both Jamie and Claire still hold that torch for each other, but that they’re also feeling the impossibility and weight of their separation. As far as Claire knows Jamie may as well be dead, whereas Jamie rarely speaks of his former wife because there’s no point in driving himself mad.

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “Outlander” Season 3 Episode 3, “All Debts Paid.”]
Unrequited Love
With Jamie in prison it made sense for the storyline to focus more on Claire and Frank’s struggles in the 1950s this week, with an episode that ambitiously spanned a ten-year timeframe that did nothing to improve Claire and Frank’s situation. Sometimes marriages fall apart little by little (especially when no work goes into maintaining them), so in using time to their advantage, writers were able to showcase a drastic fallout more rife with history and emotions than if they were to break it down over a smaller increment of time. And since viewers know that Jamie and Claire are the real relationship worth rooting for here, the timeframe also scratches that itch as everyone waits for the Frasers to finally reunite already.

It’s hard not to feel for Frank.

Unrequited Love
Of the two lives lived by the infamous couple following their separation pre-Culloden, Jamie’s was a richer one story-wise, as it involved living though a time of Red Coats, jail and infinite adventure. Basically all of the things Claire escaped when she returned to the rocks and slipped back to the 1940s, where her relatively simple existence with Frank was much easier, if not just as hollow as Jamie’s. So it makes sense that the narrative focused the majority of the second episode on Jamie’s return to Lallybroch and what it meant for Jenny, Ian and the rest of the tenants as they struggled to hide the “Dunbonnet” from British officers.

At its heart, Diana Gabaldon’s saga is a tale of romance about how love conquers all: war, continents, and even time travel. Viewers have caught on with their own passionate and often outspoken love for Jamie Fraser and Claire Randall/Fraser. And that makes a third season, marked by the lovers having been separated for nearly two decades, a tricky thing. Rather than picking up where the second season left off — with Claire, her daughter Brianna, and historian Roger tracking down the presumed dead Jamie through the history books — “Outlander” returned to the period just after Jamie and Claire’s separation to dig into some of that lost time. With 20 years to cover, there’s certainly a lot of story to incorporate, but the more writers fall down that rabbit hole the longer they separate the couple people are waiting to see. That makes this season a hard,...

As tends to be the case near the end of the year, Amy Adams can currently be seen in more than one movie: She stars in both Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals” and Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival.” As also tends to be the case, she was part of Hollywood Reporter’s actress roundtable and was once again asked about Hollywood’s pay disparity. Her response? Stop asking the actresses, who always have to endure this line of questioning, and go to the producers instead.

Abel Korzeniowski once again joined forces with Tom Ford for his latest film “Nocturnal Animals.” The composer, who earned his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Score with Ford’s directorial debut “A Single Man,” created an intense and spell-binding score to accompany the designer-turned-director’s haunting romantic thriller.
Korzeniowski described his newest creation as “embracing two extremes, but switching their traditional genre characterization. Adding in a press release that, “The crime plot is scored as an intimate, personal story, while the psychological drama is treated as a thriller. The cold and detached intertwines with poignant and excruciating, the simple and intimate becomes grand and bold.”
The soundtrack features 13 original songs and was digitally released on Back Lot Music on November 4. The physical copy will arrive November 18 via Silva Screen Records.

On a list of shows that are entirely unnoticed and underrated on Netflix, Lovesick tops the list. Part of the problem was that it launched with a different name — Scrotal Recall, and they changed the name a couple months ago. While the first name made it more apparent that it was a comedy, it may have seemed a bit crass or dumb to the casual stream surfer looking for something new to watch, but it's actually one of the greatest comedies you'll find on Netflix.
Lovesick follows Dylan. Dylan finds out he has chlamydia and travels through each of his sexual partners in recent memory to try and figure out who he got it from... and who he may have given it to. What I loved about the show is how it traveled through Dylan's life over the years and gave us snapshots of where his life was compared to present day,...

Tom Ford is not holding back on his thoughts about the upcoming election and Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Named Out Magazine’s 2016 Artist of the Year for its annual OUT100 portfolio, the fashion designer-turned-director had a few choice words about Trump, saying, “Unfortunately, a lot of people are not educated enough to realize that he actually doesn’t have a plan, cannot even make a sentence, and that’s where we have failed as a country — through education.”

Ford, who’s mentioned before that he’s voting for Hillary Clinton, previously told CNBC that he’s “shocked” that Trump is even a candidate. “I think that he’s living in a post factual era. Nothing seems to matter. He can say things, do things,” he explained.
He also told Sky News that the...

Unrequited love: It's a tale as old as time, especially for Charlie Brown. The Little Red-Haired Girl, a character in the Peanuts comic strip that won over Charlie's heart, has (almost) come forward in the new trailer for The Peanuts Movie. Although you never quite see her face, her red hair is unmistakable. And in addition to the character introduction, we finally have some insights into the movie's plot! No, Charlie and his famous friends won't be embarking on some new adventure. Instead, Charles Schulz's main character will try to "start over with a clean slate." But some clutzy accidents and a new crush next door, Charlie is going to have some trouble trying to become a...

We’re back, we’re back! “Outlander” has returned for the back half of the first season! And that means more recaps, more mixed metaphors, and more attempts to guess where this story is going. Warning: By the end of this episode, I am still solidly Team Frank. Quick key for those just joining us: Column - Colum MacKenzie Scottish Santa - Dougal MacKenzie Leery - Laoghaire Tweedle Twins - Murtagh and Angus Budget Ben - Ned Gowan Gilly - Geillis Got it? Good. We’re off! ********* Instead of diving right back into the climatic moment where Jamie deus ex machina’d his way in to rescue Claire from Black Jack Randall, Season 1B begins with Jamie narrating about how he’s a special snowflake and ruminating on the twists and turns of his life. For added symbolism, a river rushes by to metaphorically sweep Jamie up into a chain of events.

Did this episode blow everyone's minds? The plot totally thickened, and we found out more and more about the Snow Queen and what she wants, plus, we learned that Charming isn't the only person from Storybrooke who met Anna ... By the end, the questions are endless and we pretty much need a nap from information overload. Let's take a look at what happened this week.
Belle and Her Quest for Knowledge
First thing first, Belle's the realest! Because she cannot remember how her mother died, despite witnessing the whole ordeal, and she goes against her father to seek out the truth. This results in her heading to Arendelle. Oh, isn't that were Anna and Elsa are from? So why hasn't she told anyone about her little escapade to this frozen land?
