Like the hair of a Chia pet Troll doll, the "Trolls" franchise seems to never stop growing. The glittery DreamWorks reimagining of Thomas Dam's ugly-cute collectibles kicked off in 2016 with the music-filled animated adventure movie "Trolls." Since then, the movie has spawned two sequels, two holiday specials, two TV shows, a series of short films, and countless toys and tie-ins. It's also picked up an Oscar nomination (for Justin Timberlake's song "Can't Stop the Feeling!") and a cool $600 million at the box office (per Box Office Mojo) despite one of its three installments debuting during pandemic lockdown.
The "Trolls" movies are successful, but they aren't exactly the most coherent kids' movie franchise around. If you're anything like me, you've likely caught bits and pieces of several movies, potentially out of order, when the little ones in your life decided to watch (and rewatch ... and rewatch) them. DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls 3 is set for a Nov. 17, 2023 theatrical release.
Universal Pictures has chosen to premiere the animated event film at the multiplex after the second movie in the franchise, Trolls World Tour, broke the theatrical window for its release amid the novel coronavirus pandemic in 2020. The first sequel to the Trolls franchise — voice-starring Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick — earned over $100 million on streaming platforms in its first weeks of release on premium VOD (PVOD) as Universal chose not to wait for cinemas to reopen.

The Disney catalog joined Universal’s this weekend in playing whatever theaters were open at the box office as the majority of exhibition’s 5,9K theaters remain shuttered nationwide due to Covid-19.
Overall, ticket sales continued to be distressed. Disney’s 2016 Oscar-winning hit Zootopia took the top spot with an estimated $280K, putting its liftime total at $341.5M, while the studio’s Marvel Joss Whedon directed 2012 blockbuster The Avengers filed second with an estimated $260K and a running lifetime gross of $623.5M. Both pics’ takes were off from the $517K and $516K respectively made by Universal’s respective re-releases of Jurassic Park and Jaws last weekend. While Disney has had Onward in release since mid-March during the Covid-19 period, this is the first weekend we’ve seen their catalog titles, including 20th Century’s The Greatest Showman hitting marquees.

Two months ago, Universal CEO Jeff Shell told Wall Street that it took”Trolls World Tour” less than two weeks to gross $95 on premium VOD. This week, on the four top 10 lists we track, that studio holds 17 of the 40 slots.
“Trolls” and the Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island” both landed at #1 at two sites, all at the premium $19.99 price. “Trolls” transitioned to Est (electronic sell through), as opposed to rental only, which got the animated sequel the no. 1 slot at iTunes (it doesn’t list rental-only titles) and Fandango. “Staten Island” is no. 2 at Fandango, and no. 1 at Spectrum.
Also showing traction is Universal’s “You Should Have Left,” which is third at both Spectrum and FandangoNow (its rental-only status precludes iTunes; Amazon Prime shows less interest). Jon Stewart’s badly reviewed “Irrestistible” placed fourth at FandangoNow. Since it was only released on Friday and their chart is a full week,...

Exclusive: Steven Spielberg’s 1993 movie Jurassic Park was No. 1 for the fourth time in its release history this past weekend as movie theaters tried to have a semblance during the Covid-19 pandemic over what is typically a big moviegoing weekend, Father’s Day.
While 2020 fare like Universal/Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls World Tour had been leading at a still distressed box office for 9 weekends (with the exception of last weekend when The Invisible Man returned to the top of the chart), catalog titles dominated the majority of this weekend with Universal’s Jurassic Park earning $517,6K at 230 sites and the studio’s Jaws taking $516,3K at 187 locations. Those respective No. 1 and 2 weekend takes are improvements upon last weekend’s Invisible Man at $383K and Trolls World Tour with $275,7K.
Jurassic Park held the No. 1 spot at the box office in its first three weekends of release following its June 11, 1993 opening.

In the latest example of the coronavirus pandemic wreaking havoc on the movie industry, the once Father’s Day bound theatrical release of Greyhound, a movie that stars Tom Hanks and is set in World War II, is now finding safe harbor for wide release on Apple TV+. Considering that Hanks and WWII go together like, well, Father’s Day and ties, this development is both another harbinger of the changing times as well as a major step-up in commitments for feature films by Apple.
Indeed, as broken by Deadline, Greyhound will premiere simultaneously in 100 countries on Apple’s new streaming service, albeit a release date is currently unknown. This will mark the first time Hanks stars in a direct-to-streaming movie, as well as the latest unexpected development for Hanks’ passion project.

NBCUniversal chief Jeff Shell is not backing down from Universal’s flap with top exhibitors over the studio’s premium VOD release of “Trolls World Tour.” The NBCU CEO told investors Thursday during Comcast’s quarterly earnings call that premium VOD releases for some titles will be a “complementary element” to traditional theatrical distribution for the studio.
Shell emphasized that he sees theatrical distribution as rebounding from the Covid-19 shutdowns. But he also stressed that the reality for many consumers is that movies are watched in the home, and studios would be foolish to ignore that fact.
“The question is, when we come out of this, what is going to be the model? I would expect that consumers will return to theaters and we will be part of that,” Shell said. “I also would expect Pvod is going be part of that offering in some way. It’s not going to be a replacement,...

You know that iconic Universal Pictures logo? The one where giant silver letters envelop the Earth? It won’t be shown at AMC Theaters anytime soon.
Why? Because AMC, the largest cinema chain in the United States, has announced a blanket ban on all Universal films, after the latter studio declared it would continue to release movies simultaneously via theaters and streaming once the social restrictions brought on by Coronavirus are lifted.
Citing the runaway success of Trolls World Tour ($100 million through digital sales alone), Universal hopes to explore VOD releases in the future, raising major question marks over the likes of Fast & Furious 9 and Jurassic World: Dominion – two juggernauts currently on course for delayed theatrical releases.
But Universal’s announcement has ruffled some feathers (to put it mildly), after Cineworld (who own Regal Cinemas) today confirmed plans to join AMC in its boycott of Universal movies.

The sense of solidarity between movie studios and movie exhibitors broke down in spectacularly public fashion this week as Universal Pictures, the studio leading the way in shattering the theatrical window, and AMC Theatres, the largest movie theater chain in North America, entered a public relations confrontation.
The showdown, which has so far culminated in AMC Theatres threatening to refuse showing any Universal releases across their nationwide network of theaters when they reopen, began Tuesday morning when NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell told The Wall Street Journal, “The results for Trolls World Tour have exceeded our expectations and demonstrated the viability of Pvod. As soon as theaters reopen, we expect to release movies in both formats.”
By emphasizing an interest in further exploring the appeal of VOD, some, including AMC Theatres as well as the National Association of Theatre Owners (Nato), accused Universal of betraying the theatrical window and their exhibiting partners,...

Tensions rise over threat to theatrical exclusivity model.
April 28 Evening Update: An extraordinary war of words broke out on Tuesday night (April 28) after AMC Theatres said it will not carry Universal films following comments earlier in the day by NBCUniversal head Jeff Shell in light of the premium VOD release of Trolls World Tour.
The AMC riposte prompted a reply from Universal in which it affirmed its belief in the theatrical experience and also said it will release films on premium VOD when it made sense, further expressing disappointment in a ”seemingly coordinated attempt from AMC and Nato to confuse our position and our actions.

AMC Theatres has hit hard at Universal Pictures, announcing it will no longer play any of the studio’s films in the wake of NBCUniversal CEO Jeff Shell’s promise to use premium VOD while films are still in theaters.
Universal used the Pvod format to release “Trolls World Tour” on April 10 amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic and widespread theater closures rather than wait for theaters to re-open — which is unlikely to occur until mid-summer. The studio revealed Tuesday that “Trolls World Tour” took in $100 million in premium VOD rentals in its first three weeks of play in North America, a result the will push film on the road to profitability.

Universal’s decision to take DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls World Tour into homes at the 48-hour rental price of $19.99 during exhibition’s Covid-19 shutdown has reportedly racked up an estimated $95M in rental fees in the title’s first 19 days. With VOD terms in the studio’s favor at an estimated 80%, Universal is banking an estimated $77M in revenues before marketing expenses. Those are better terms for Universal then the 50/50 or 60%-65%/40% splits they reap in their relationship with movie theaters.
Of course, these are great results upfront for Trolls World Tour, but what does it mean for the pic’s downstream revenues?

“Trolls World Tour” (Universal) was #1 in theaters this weekend, such as they are: Playing in a handful of drive-ins, sources say it took in over $100,000 for the three days. More significantly, it also was #1 on three VOD charts.
Universal has not yet reported “Trolls” revenues, but based on multiple sources it seems possible that its domestic 10-day take could exceed $80 million. With the studio retaining a far greater share via these platforms than from theatrical, it could recoup much or even all of the $90 million-$100 million production cost. However, it would represent much less profit than a theatrical release followed by home viewing.

Due to the Covid-19 crisis gripping the world, Trolls World Tour, the sequel to the 2016 Trolls film, was originally scheduled to be in theaters on April 10, but instead was released on Video on Demand as a 48-hour rental. It’s a chance the studio had to take, unless they wanted to delay releasing the film in theaters several months from now when movie theaters reopen. It’s also the only wide release film in the last month and since it’s a family film, should do quite well in terms of rental sales.

Yes it’s true. Universal’s $19.99 48-hour rentals of “Trolls World Tour” exceeded the studio’s highest expectations. The premium Video on Demand market (which also allows for some downloads) is not yet the new normal for top releases. But these results will encourage other companies to make pricing experiments with their backlog of unreleased films.
With Pixar’s “Soul” (Disney) the latest top pre-July release rescheduled for November, we have it at least three more months before theaters might reopen. Even Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden cites theaters and events as opening much later than stores and offices. “It’s fluid,” said Jeanne Berney, COO of Picturehouse, which moved religious drama “Fatima,” starring Harvey Keitel and Sonia Braga, from April 24 to August 14 opposite “Wonder Woman 1984.” Now the indie distributor has more time to reach out to church groups and promote the film’s Andrea Bocelli single.

Later this month Universal Pictures’ Trolls World Tour will make history. Previously scheduled for a theatrical release on April 10, the film is still technically slated to premiere in some theaters on that day. But it will also be arriving on video-on-demand streaming, marking the first time a studio has broken the theatrical window for a major release so it can have a day-and-date premiere on VOD.

Say goodbye to blockbuster season — at least for this year.
After would-be summer hits from Disney, Warner Bros., and Universal already vacated their release dates, Sony Pictures announced Monday that its comic book adventure “Morbius,” “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and virtually all of its upcoming tentpoles were being moved into the fall or beyond. It was an acknowledgment that the coronavirus pandemic is not expected to vanish anytime soon — a grim reality that likely means that movie theaters will remain closed for the near future.
“When Sony pulled the plug on their films, that signaled the end of any hope of a summer movie season,” said Jeff Bock, an analyst with Exhibitor Relations. “If magically a vaccine comes out in June, then maybe that won’t be the case, but I don’t really expect that to happen.”
Historically, summer movie season has been the most profitable stretch for the film business.

Universal and Illumination have delayed the release “Minions: The Rise of Gru,” the latest tentpole to get pushed back amid the coronavirus pandemic. The animated family film was scheduled to hit theaters July 3 and doesn’t have a new launch date.
Most movie theaters across the country have been shut down for an indefinite period of time to lower risk of exposure to the virus. Only AMC Theatres, the nation’s largest chain, indicated a time frame and suggested locations could be closed for six to 12 weeks. But “Minions” vacating its July release indicates that studios could expect closures to last through summer, one of the busiest times of year for moviegoing.
In this case, Illumination Animation had to shutter its studios in France because of the global health crisis, meaning “Minions: The Rise of Gru” wouldn’t be completed in time.

On Tuesday morning (March 17), Disney finally announced that its next Marvel Studios tentpole, Black Widow, was being moved off its May 1 arrival to an indefinite release date later in the year. The news was hardly shocking at this point: with the ongoing spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, nearly all major theater chains in North America — as well as many worldwide — have shut their doors for anywhere from six to 12 weeks, which effectively sealed the Widow’s fate regardless of the Mouse’s decision.
Since it’s difficult to predict how long this crisis will continue before the virus abates enough to allow for businesses to reopen and public events to begin again, Disney cannot reliably unveil a new release date for Black Widow. Unlike the James Bond and Fast and Furious franchises, which also moved their releases but only deal with one movie at a time, the bumping of Black Widow...
