"It's not that deep fam. Take this, it will help." Time for an escape – into the world of animation. Esc is an amusing 3-minute long, 3D animated short film created by the studio Foreal. It's written and directed by London-based filmmaker Sam Southward, whose distinct shiny objects & rounded-corners style works well for this story of an overworked young woman who needs relief. The film was created for Offf México (here), "an international festival that celebrates creativity & digital culture in the company of the brightest minds from Mexico and the world." The description for this Esc short says that she "realises that she must refocus on what’s important" while in the midst of her existential crisis. Though I'm wondering if she truly found an "escape" or just another brief distraction from the overworked office hellscape most are stuck in..? // Continue Reading ›...

Prolific Singaporean filmmaker Kelvin Tong’s latest feature “A Year Of No Significance,” which has its world premiere at the 34th Singapore International Film Festival (Sgiff), mourns the loss of a generation.
Set in Singapore in 1979, the film chronicles the gradual disintegration of a middle-aged architect as changes rock the 45th year of his life. Sidelined in the office because of his inability to speak English, Lim Cheng Soon is cut further adrift when his wife inexplicably leaves him. His elderly father moves in, forcing him to confront the fact that the former has always preferred his younger brother. Robbed of his identities as architect, husband and son, Cheng Soon struggles in the dusk of his life.
The cast includes Peter Yu, Tan Tiow Im, Mandy Chen and Naomi Yeo. Tong made his feature debut with “Eating Air” and has made several features since, including “Love Story” (2006), which won best director at the 19th Sgiff.

In just her fourth American movie the Swedish import Ingrid Bergman proves herself the most sensual creature in Hollywood, running away with Spencer Tracy and Victor Fleming’s remake of Mamoulian’s pre-Code classic. The morals are cleaned up and the sex angle tamed down (except for Fröken Bergman) and the acting is less stylized — overall it’s a fine show. Ingrid learned quickly how things were done at MGM — she swiped the film’s plum role from Lana Turner.

Photo: ‘2149: The Aftermath’/Suki Films Same Film, Different Names? Directed by Benjamin Duffield, ‘2149: The Aftermath’, also under two alternative titles called, ‘Confinement’ and ‘Darwin’ has been released on multiple streaming services just a few days ago. When I noticed the name changes, I became a bit concerned about the quality of the film. Typically when films continue to re-release under different names, it is a sign of rebranding. They attempt to erase whatever criticism was attached to the previous release, by changing its name, and re-releasing it at a different time. It is an indicator of an inexperienced team. However, that shouldn’t be the case. Here's something that plays into the current obsession with technology: Darwin.
Directed by Benjamin Duffield, a long-time TV and movie editor who occasionally dabbles as a director, Darwin is Duffield's first feature in a number of years and it looks rather fantastic.
The movie stars Nick Krause as Darwin, a young man living in a dystopian society where the outside world has been destroyed. Darwin spends his days in front of a computer screen playing games and dreaming about girls but when his living space encounters a malfunction that leaves him without food or water, he ventures outside where he discovers a perfectly healthy world. He's obviously being lied to but to what end?
